PM cautions 'risk of misuse' of AI, other powerful tech in unskilled hands

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday cautioned that a powerful technology like AI in unskilled, untrained hands holds significant risk of misuse, as he advocated the need for clear ‘dos and don’ts’ and use of watermarks on AI-generated content to curb misinformation and deepfake-related harms in the society.

In a candid, free-wheeling chat with Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, Modi spoke at length on how India has democratised technology for the benefit of its citizens, embracing the power of digital for improving lives, and exuded confidence that the country will take remarkable strides in the fourth industrial revolution, that has digital in its core.

During the discussion that touched on a slew of topics, from AI to Digital Public Infrastructure, the PM said in the case of deepfakes, it is crucial to acknowledge and identify that a particular deepfake content is AI-generated, along with appropriate disclosures about its source.

Citing dangers of AI harms and deepfakes in a society, he said, misuse of his voice, for instance, can initially deceive and misguide people leading to widespread uproar.

“It is crucial to acknowledge that deepfake content is AI-generated and mention its source. These measures are important in early days. We need to establish dos and don’ts…we will need to think about it seriously,” Modi said.

The PM talked of “significant risk of misuse” when a powerful technology like AI is placed in unskilled and untrained hands.

“I suggest that we should start with clear watermarks on AI-generated content to prevent misinformation,” he said, adding the idea is not to devalue AI creations but to recognise them for what they are.

Acknowledging the importance of AI, the PM outlined how India extensively leveraged the new-age innovations during the G20 Summit. AI also helped to translate his speeches in different languages, he mentioned.

In the course of his conversation, the PM asked Gates to take a selfie via Namo app, as he demonstrated an AI-powered feature and face-recognition technology on the popular app. Gates lauded India’s technological strides.

In a witty take on AI, the PM said, in India, mothers are referred to ‘Aai’ (a word that sounds similar to AI), and added that children here have become so advanced that they start using the hi-tech term very early in life.

Modi said if people use AI merely as “magic tool” or rely on it out of sheer laziness, say in drafting letters, it would lead to “great injustice”.

He stressed that AI tools must be leveraged to enhance human efficiency and within a field of expertise.

“One should compete with AI and ChatGPT…should strive to surpass its capabilities,” he advised.

PM said he was very clear that he would not let digital divide hamper the progress of the country. India, he said, has built digital public infrastructure, and extended digital facilities and services for public good.

Modi said data security remains a paramount concern, and emphasised that while India has a strong legal framework in place, public awareness is equally crucial.

“We need to train the common man for quality data. Second, data-owner must be informed about the intentions behind data requests. If the requester aims to monetise the data through agreements, consent should be given. The priority should be given for research, and it is essential to keep the cost of research data affordable,” Modi said.

Apple to launch iPad Pro and iPad Air in May, ahead of WWDC 2024: Report

Apple to launch iPad Pro and iPad Air in May, ahead of WWDC 2024: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to launch the iPad Pro and iPad Air in May. The new launch timeline surfaced after the rumoured March launch turned out to be a false alert. The May launch timeline is reported by Bloomberg, which noted in its report that Apple’s overseas suppliers have ramped up the production of the upcoming iPad models ahead of the May launch. If true, the iPad launch will be followed by its annual developers-focused event – the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference – that is slated to kick off on June 10.

Initially, Bloomberg had reported that Apple is mulling to introduce new iPad models in March. Subsequently, other news organisations reported that Apple has started shipping the 2024 iPad Air to other countries from its manufacturing hubs in China, with a potential launch planned alongside the iPad Pro on March 26. This date, however, was snubbed as false by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who said that there is no launch scheduled by Apple for that day.

Nevertheless, Apple is reportedly done prepping the revamped versions of both the iPad Pro and iPad Air. The iPad Pro models, which the company has codenamed J717, J718, J720 and J721 internally, are said to feature an OLED display and would be powered by the latest M3 chip. The iPad Air 2024 model, on the other hand, is said to be powered by the M2 chipset. Along with the new iPad models, Apple would likely launch a new Magic Keyboard and an Apple Pencil as companion accessories.

iPad Pro: What to expect

The iPad Pro 2024 model would likely be powered by the M3 chip and support MagSafe wireless charging. However, the biggest change is expected to be in the display department with the 2024 high-end iPad model reported to be the first iPad to sport an OLED panel. The OLED display would allow the Pro models to feature variable refresh rates, which is likely to reach as low as 10Hz – compared to 24Hz on the predecessor. The upcoming iPad Pro would be offered in two different screen sizes – 11-inch and 13-inch –and would likely feature significantly thinner bezels on all sides compared to the current generation model.

The 2024 iPad Pro would likely get a redesigned rear camera bump with a rectangular module housing the cameras and the flash. It may even get the front camera in landscape orientation.

iPad Air: What to expect

It is expected that the upcoming iPad Air model would be offered in a new 12.9-inch display option, alongside the standard 10.9-inch model. Despite a bigger-sized variant, the 2024 iPad Air model is expected to retain the frame and chassis design of its predecessor. However, it might get a similar camera module redesign as the Pro model.

The 2024 iPad Air is expected to be powered by the M2 chipset and get support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Foldable iPhone: After Vision Pro, Apple eyes another category debut soon

Foldable iPhone: After Vision Pro, Apple eyes another category debut soon

Representative image: Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

There have been news reports making rounds on the web about Apple developing a foldable device, which could likely be an iPhone or an iPad. While there is no official confirmation yet and, if there is one in the works, it likely won’t be released in 2024, there is a fresh news report about internal changes that Apple has reportedly gone through to focus more on the foldable device development.

9To5Mac has reported that Apple has moved some of the engineers, who were previously working on the Vision Pro headset, to develop foldable iPhone or iPads. The report also states that the initial plan of the company to launch its first foldable device in 2026 has changed and Apple now plans to launch either a foldable iPhone or a foldable iPad model by 2027.

According to the report, Apple’s display suppliers Samsung and LG have been sending screen samples to the Cupertino based technology giant for its upcoming foldable device project. The samples are said to be in the 7-inch to 8-inch range, suggesting that Apple might be planning on a book-style foldable smartphone that when opened, has a display size like an iPad mini.

Apple is reportedly developing at least two prototype models for a foldable iPhone with a clamshell design that folds horizontally, like Samsung Galaxy Z Flip models. However, the 9To5Mac report stated, Apple is unlikely to continue with a flip-style foldable iPhone design due concerns about a visible crease.

Earlier this month, Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said that Apple’s only foldable product with a proper development plan is its foldable MacBook with a bigger screen. Kuo said that Apple has a “clear development schedule” for a 20.3-inch foldable MacBook, which he expects to enter mass production by 2027.

With multiple reports stating differently, the form factor of the first foldable device by Apple is currently unknown, however it is likely that the American tech giant will unveil at least one foldable device by 2027.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Foldable phones are a new type of smartphone that has a bendable screen, allowing it to be folded and unfolded.

  • Competitors like Samsung already have foldable phones on the market.

  • Apple is reportedly in the early stages of developing foldable iPhone prototypes.

  • Analysts predict a release date between 2025 and 2027.

  • The design might be a clamshell style that folds shut, similar to the classic flip phones.

  • Some rumours suggest a larger foldable iPad might come before the iPhone.

Singapore attracts cyber espionage as host of high-profile global events

Singapore attracts cyber espionage as host of high-profile global events

The report said event organisers and hotels have confirmed providing security support — ranging from coordinating with telcos to conducting sweeps for surveillance devices | Photo: Bloomberg

Cyberespionage is taking place all over the world and Singapore — being one of the hubs for hosting high-profile trade exhibitions and conferences — “inevitably” attracts intelligence operations, a report said on Friday.

“Cyberespionage is happening all over the world because we are more connected than ever before,” said Dr Alan Chong, senior fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies.

Chong’s comments came after Russian media earlier this month leaked a recording of a German military phone call that Berlin said was due to a participant dialling in through an “unauthorised connection” from a Singapore hotel during the February Singapore Airshow.

“In terms of the geopolitical location of Singapore, to me it’s no surprise. Since the Cold War, long before the digital age, we were already a base of operations for both the Communist and the Western powers,” Channel News Asia quoted Chong as saying.

Intelligence operations around the world will happen more frequently as cyberespionage makes remote spy activity possible even without an agent on site, he said.

The report said event organisers and hotels have confirmed providing security support — ranging from coordinating with telcos to conducting sweeps for surveillance devices.

The German participant was in Singapore to attend the Singapore Airshow.

The February event would have been a “field day” for Russian intelligence and hotels where the attendees stayed would have been targeted by “widespread wiretapping efforts”, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said.

In the leaked call, discussions were held on support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, including the possible delivery of the long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv.
