WWDC 2024: iOS 18 to AI and more, what to expect from Apple on June 10

WWDC 2024: iOS 18 to AI and more, what to expect from Apple on June 10

Apple has announced that it will be hosting its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) online from June 10 through June 14. Following the official announcement, Apple’s Senior Vice president of marketing, Greg Joswiak, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the event is “going to be Absolutely Incredible!” with “A” and “I” in block letters. This suggests that Apple will push for AI integration into its upcoming iOS, iPadOS, macOS and other platforms that have been confirmed to be showcased during the conference.

From being mum to suddenly vocal, Apple seem ready to adopt generative side of AI. During its quarterly earnings call on February 1, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, revealed that the company is working on AI features that will be announced later this year. Subsequently, reports surfaced stating that the Cupertino-based technology giant is in talks with both Google and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI to power iPhone AI features.

Apple WWDC 2024: What to expect

Apple is expected to announce advancements that it would bring with the next major software updates for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, and the recently launched Vision Pro headset. Of them, the iPhone platform would likely be at the forefront with the company planning a major overhaul with the iOS 18 operating system.

According to a Blomberg report, the iOS 18 update is expected to be the “most ambitious overhaul” of the iPhone’s software in the product’s history. The report also stated that Apple will introduce a “slew of new proactive features” powered by AI to assist iPhone users in their daily lives. However, with Apple reportedly in talks with Google and OpenAI, it is unlikely that the company will debut its own generative AI tool or related features.

Apple has been reportedly exploring ways to incorporate gen-AI features into its virtual assistant Siri and Messages app for features like text summarisation, suggestions and more.

It is likely that these AI-features will be powered by either Google’s Gemini model or OpenAI’s GPT model, which already offers features like text generation, summarisation and more. Other apps across Apple’s platform, such as Apple Music, Pages and Keynotes, will likely get the AI treatment, too.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is also planning a minor refresh of the Apple Watch’s software and the first major update to the operating system running on the Vision Pro headset.

OnePlus Watch 2 review: Not perfect, but battery life makes you think again

OnePlus Watch 2 review: Not perfect, but battery life makes you think again

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus succeeded with many of its products at its inaugural attempt, but the same cannot be said for its smartwatch venture. Its debutant smartwatch, released in 2021, fell short on several fronts. Now, approximately three years later, the company introduces the OnePlus Watch 2. While it is positioned as a successor, it bears no resemblance to its predecessor besides the OnePlus branding.

Design

The OnePlus Watch 2 features a premium stainless-steel casing, exuding sleekness. The Radiant Steel colour variant reviewed here adds a touch of sophistication, yet its shimmering steel casing paired with dull green straps may not suit everyday wear. Fortunately, the straps are user-replaceable.

Available in a single size, the Watch 2 leans towards a bold aesthetic, translating to a substantial presence on the wrist. While some may appreciate the extended screen space, individuals with slimmer wrists might find it cumbersome.

Nevertheless, if one can overlook the one-size-fits-all design, the OnePlus Watch 2 offers a pleasant experience. The inclusion of physical buttons—a crown and a customisable shortcut button—represents a welcome enhancement. Particularly during workouts, they offer a convenient alternative to swiping. However, the rotating crown serves a purely aesthetic purpose, a design decision that might leave users desiring more functionality.

Display

As previously mentioned, the OnePlus Watch 2 embraces a bold approach evident in its display. Boasting a sizable 1.43-inch AMOLED panel, the smartwatch provides ample screen real estate for notifications, fitness data, and watch faces, facilitating quick information consumption. The AMOLED technology ensures vibrant colours, deep blacks, and excellent contrast while enabling an energy-efficient always-on display mode. Encased in a protective 2.5D curved sapphire crystal glass, the display offers enhanced scratch resistance and a touch of luxury.

Software

The defining aspect of the OnePlus Watch 2 lies in its software. Featuring a dual architecture, it accommodates dual operating systems that seamlessly transition without imposing hurdles on the end user. Primarily based on Google Wear OS 4, the Watch 2 delivers a smoother user experience, improved app compatibility, and enhanced integration with Google services. However, the absence of Google Pay services upon its launch in India is regrettable. Nonetheless, the ability to personalise watch faces and access a broader array of apps represents a definite upgrade compared to its predecessor.

Dual-Architecture

The OnePlus Watch 2 employs a dual-architecture approach, with two separate chips powering distinct operating systems. This innovative setup, crucial for its impressive battery life, comprises a low-power chip for basic functions like timekeeping and notifications, alongside the main Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 chip for demanding tasks such as app usage or GPS tracking. While this clever approach results in remarkable battery longevity, surpassing that of most smartwatches, it is not without drawbacks. While the Watch 2 seamlessly toggles between the two operating systems in most cases, occasional lags and less-than-seamless integration of certain functionalities may occur.

Battery Life

This is where the Watch 2 truly excels, compelling a reassessment despite its shortcomings. Thanks to its dual-OS system, the Watch 2 can endure an impressive 100 hours in “Smart Mode” and an astonishing 12 days in Power Saver mode. This liberates users from the daily charging ritual, allowing them to focus on their priorities.

Health and Fitness Tracking

The Watch 2 offers a comprehensive suite of fitness tracking features, encompassing heart rate monitoring, step counting, and various workout modes. The data is presented clearly and integrates seamlessly with Google Fit. However, some advanced health features such as ECG monitoring or blood oxygen tracking are noticeably absent. Sleep tracking appears accurate, effectively capturing sleep stages and duration. Nonetheless, occasional discrepancies in heart rate readings during workouts have been observed.

Verdict

The OnePlus Watch 2 represents a significant advancement. With its premium design, industry-leading battery life, and the latest Wear OS software, it presents a compelling option. However, its bulky dimensions and lack of certain advanced health features may deter some users.

For those prioritising a stylish watch with enduring battery life and a tolerance for occasional software glitches, the Watch 2 stands out at Rs 24,999. However, individuals with smaller wrists or those seeking cutting-edge health-tracking capabilities may find better alternatives elsewhere on the market.

Apple set to unveil AI strategy at developers conference on June 10

Apple set to unveil AI strategy at developers conference on June 10

By Mark Gurman

Apple Inc. plans to kick off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, when the company is expected to unveil its long-anticipated artificial intelligence strategy.

The iPhone maker announced the timing on Tuesday, saying the event will run through June 14. Though Apple didn’t say what it plans to unveil — in usual fashion — people familiar with the matter have said that the presentation will focus heavily on AI.

Mark your calendars for #WWDC24, June 10-14. It’s going to be Absolutely Incredible! pic.twitter.com/YIln5972ZD

— Greg Joswiak (@gregjoz) March 26, 2024

Continuing an approach used since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, the conference will be hosted for free on Apple’s website and app for developers. The opening day announcements will take place in-person at the company’s campus in Cupertino, California.

Apple is expected to unveil its next major software updates for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro headset and smartwatch — and its new AI strategy will be front and center for the planned iOS 18 upgrade.

In announcing the event, Apple marketing executive Greg Joswiak said, “It’s going to be Absolutely Incredible” — a clear nod to AI.

Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy will include a slew of new proactive features to assist users in their daily lives. The company isn’t planning to debut its own generative AI chatbot, though. Instead, Apple is holding talks with potential partners like Alphabet Inc.’s Google and OpenAI to supply generative AI services, Bloomberg News has reported.

The iOS 18 update is expected to be the most ambitious overhaul of the iPhone’s software in its history, according to people working on the upgrade. The company is also planning a minor refresh of the Apple Watch’s software and the first major update to the operating system running on the Vision Pro headset.

Executives plan to invest more in GenAI for sustainability: IBM study

Executives plan to invest more in GenAI for sustainability: IBM study

Organisations that embed sustainability spend slightly less on dedicated sustainability efforts as a share of their revenue compared to organisations that don’t embed. Photo: Bloomberg

Nearly two-thirds of top executives surveyed believe that generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be important in their sustainability efforts while 76 per cent of executives plan to increase their investment in this emerging technology for sustainability, a study by IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) said.

Generative AI can be a game changer for data-driven sustainability, enabling organisations to turn trade-offs into win-wins, identify improvement opportunities, and drive innovation at speed and scale, the study said.

While 63 per cent of executives surveyed agree that generative AI will be important for their sustainability efforts, 76 per cent say they plan to increase their investment in generative AI for sustainability.

“With AI reshaping industries, integrating sustainability into core business practices add to the long-term value creation. The commitment of businesses to invest in Gen AI for sustainability signals a promising move towards a greener, more prosperous future, said Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India Private Limited.

Based on a survey of 5,000 C-suite executives across 22 industries and 22 countries including US, UK, and Japan, the study, Beyond Checking the Box, said if organisations flip the way they operationalise sustainability, they can significantly increase business value. The key is to embed sustainability throughout the business, truly bake it into operations, rather than treat it as an add-on, it said.

Organisations that embed sustainability spend slightly less on dedicated sustainability efforts as a share of their revenue compared to organisations that don’t embed.

“Organisations in India that embed sustainability are 41 per cent more likely to attribute great improvement in revenue from their sustainability efforts and are 90 per cent more likely to outperform their peers on profitability”.

It added that many organisations are approaching sustainability as an accounting or reporting exercise rather than a transformation play.

“Spending on sustainability reporting exceeds spending on sustainability innovation by 38 per cent in India.”

In India, 78 per cent of executives surveyed agree that sustainability drives better business results, and 68 per cent agree that sustainability is central to their business strategy. However, almost half (47 per cent) of Indian organisations still struggle to fund sustainability investments, the study noted.

Fujifilm Instax Mini Link 2 review: This instant printer is fun to use

Fujifilm Instax Mini Link 2 review: This instant printer is fun to use

Japanese imaging company Fujifilm has a rich line of instant cameras and printers that go with the Instax moniker. Fresh in this line is the Instax Mini Link 2, a portable instant printer priced at Rs 13,999. The convenience of printing photos anytime and anywhere is indeed a novel idea. But, is the Instax Mini Link 2 a feature-packed device with any benefits compared to traditional printing methods?  Let us explore.

What comes in the box

The starter kit comes in an aesthetically packed purple box containing 10 printing sheets, which are separately sold at Rs 549. Each sheet measures 8.6 cm x 5.4 cm for the picture and 6.2 cm x 4.6 cm for the image size. The starter kit includes a 1x mini printer, 10x glossy film cards, a sticker pack, a user guide, a warranty card, and a micro USB cable for charging. Fujifilm offers the Instax Mini Link 2 in three colours: soft pink, clay white, and space blue. The unit reviewed here is of clay white colour.

Design

Portable design and lightweight body are two things that the Instax Mini Link 2 has going for it. The device is as big as a generic smartphone and weighs around 312 g.

On the front, it has a multipurpose button for indicating charge and turning the printer on/off. On the right side, it has a micro USB port for charging and a reset button. Additionally, the right side has an LED light on the top.

The back panel has a door lock button that opens and closes the area for keeping the films. The top features an ejection slot and a feature button.

The Instax Mini Link 2 is made of plastic, which makes it fragile and prone to easy damages. Look wise, however, it has ridges and curved lines all over the body.

Setting up

To begin using the printer, start by charging it with the micro USB cable connected to a smartphone adapter. The LED light on the front will flash during charging and remain white when fully charged, typically taking around one hour. You can check the charging status within the companion app (more about it in section below).

To connect the printer to the app, simply press the Bluetooth icon at the top of the app and hold down the power button on the printer, akin to pairing any other Bluetooth device.

Companion app

The Instax Mini Link 2 printer is supported by the Instax Mini Link app, which is available on both iOS and Android devices. Unfortunately, there is no desktop support for it, rendering it incompatible with Windows or MacOS operating systems. Upon downloading the app from the Play Store, users are prompted to grant necessary permissions, including location access. To connect the printer to the app, simply press the power button for one second.

Instant Mini Link app features

The app displays the battery life, film strips left, and other details at the top. It boasts a friendly user interface with two modes: Print mode and Fun mode.

Print mode offers Simple Print, Video Print, and Instax Camera options. In Simple Print mode, users can easily select images from their photo album for printing. Video mode allows trimming or cropping a portion of a video before printing, while Instax Camera mode enables image capture directly within the app.

One interesting feature is the ability to use the printer as a remote control. By tilting the printer inward or outward, users can zoom in or out. Additionally, the power button can be used as a remote shutter button to operate a connected smartphone camera. The app also has a section to show print history.

In Fun mode, the app interface transitions to a reddish colour scheme, offering options such as Frame Print, Collage Print, Match Test, InstaxAir, and Sketch Edit and Print.

Frame Print presents various frame options for users to choose and apply before printing, although some may find the pre-installed frames to be outdated.

Collage Print provides different layout options for printing.

Match Test is a fun and engaging mode that assesses compatibility through a series of questions and directly prints the results. While enjoyable, this feature does have its limitations in terms of question variety.

The Sketch and Print option enables you to extract a portion of an image and import  it into another image. This sticker cut-out like feature would have been good if it had worked accurately.

Among the most notable features is the Instax Air. It transforms the printer into a pencil, allowing you to doodle in the air while also creating a QR code for music and video formats through the printed image. When selecting the Instax Air feature, you can either create a video or capture an image using both the front and rear cameras. The printer can be utilised by the subject/person to draw anything in the air, which is then reflected as a design on the image. The subject/person needs to press the button on the top, focusing the LED light towards the camera, and draw the desired shape. The person holding the printer feels a gentle vibration. In the app, the camera darkens to create the effect. However, the output leaves one asking for more since the image quality is suboptimal even in good lighting conditions.

Overall, the app provides a variety of features aimed at improving the printing process and fostering creativity. However, it is advisable to utilise original camera photos and refrain from app edits, as they may affect the printing quality. The camera function within the app utilises original image processing and generally delivers better prints.

Loading the film packs

Begin by sliding and holding the door lock, then open the film door located at the back. Align the film pack with the yellow mark, insert it, and securely close the door. As you close the door, the black film cover will automatically be removed for disposal. Unloading can also be done through the back in a similar manner.

Before initiating the printing process, you can choose between two modes: INSTAX-Natural mode, which produces soft, natural-looking photos, and INSTAX-Rich mode, for highly saturated colours. These modes can be adjusted in the settings.

To print, either swipe up or press the print option. The app indicates printing progress, and you get to see the printer in action as it produces the prints. It typically takes around 90 seconds for the photo to develop after it has been printed.

Print quality

The photo printed does not appear natural in colour and lacks quality. However, the prints are usable and not entirely bad. The natural mode is preferred for optimal results. I attempted adjusting the brightness during editing, but the picture did not turn out well. So, I recommend not to use in-app editing options.

Battery

The printer has a built-in battery for standalone use. It charges in almost one hour and 30 minutes. The battery drains quite quickly, even when the device is in stand-by mode. The battery status can be checked in the app. As for on-battery time, the printer is good for eight hour battery life on a single charge when used in moderation.

Verdict

The Instax Mini Link 2 is a handy device for wirelessly printing photos on-the-go. The overall product is easy to operate, and the app has a user-friendly interface with fun and engaging features. Although the output is not high quality, it is not bad either. The in-app features need improvements in some areas.

While the printer performs well in its primary function of printing, at Rs 10,999 for the printer and Rs 13,999 for the starter kit, the Instax Mini Link 2 is on the expensive side of the price spectrum.
