Downloading now: More fights over app store policies could be coming

India’s mobile economy and the purchasing power of its consumers could pitch homegrown startups against Google again – like they did earlier in March.

Google delisted a number of Indian startups for not complying with its billing policy, which charges up to 30 per cent of money spent through apps downloaded from its Play Store. The apps were restored after the Indian government mediated.

A key reason for tensions could be the rising share of domestic apps in India’s mobile economy. Their share among the top 100 most downloaded apps increased from 29.1 per cent in 2019 to 36.6 per cent in 2022 as seen in chart 1 (click image for interactive link). India’s policy changes have played a role, according to the ‘Digital Progress and Trends Report 2023’ by the World Bank.

India has banned more than 200 Chinese apps since 2020 and subsequently “…domestic apps have been quick to fill the void”, said the report.

Indian app-makers are asserting themselves at a time when global research suggests that the mobile economy is becoming increasingly valuable. The share of advertising has grown from $190 billion in 2019 to $362 billion in 2023. The value of consumer spending on mobile apps rose from $120 billion to $171 billion.

Google collects 11-30 per cent of fees from each transaction when people spend money on apps. The dominance of Google and other app stores has drawn antitrust attention in the United States (US), Europe and India.

Citizens of richer countries appear to spend more through mobile phones (chart 2).

Chart

India is not among the top 20 by that standard but its rank may well rise as per capita income improves. India has a per capita gross domestic product of around $2,500 compared to over $12,500 in China. The amount of money going as commissions charged by intermediaries such as Google’s app store would accordingly increase.

India has the second-highest number of mobile app downloads in the world. It is second to China and ahead of the US. A larger proportion of Indian users may well be converted into paying customers when incomes rise (chart 3).

Chart

This may also mean that the controversy over Google’s billing policies may lead to more competition and extend to other dominant app stores. Apple, which has a similar offering, has been gaining market share in India.

EU antitrust row: Microsoft says Google has a competitive edge in gen AI

EU antitrust row: Microsoft says Google has a competitive edge in gen AI

Alphabet unit Google enjoys a competitive edge in generative artificial intelligence due to its trove of data and AI-optimised chips, Microsoft has told EU antitrust regulators, underscoring the rivalry between the two tech giants.

The comments by Microsoft were in response to a consultation launched by the European Commission in January on the level of competition in generative AI.

The growing popularity of generative AI, which can generate human-like responses to written prompts and is exemplified by Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s chatbot Gemini, has triggered concerns about misinformation and fake news.

“Today, only one company – Google – is vertically integrated in a manner that provides it with strength and independence at every AI layer from chips to a thriving mobile app store.

Everyone else must rely on partnerships to innovate and compete,” Microsoft said in its report to the Commission.

It said Google’s self-supply AI semiconductors would give it a competitive advantage for the years to come, while its large sets of proprietary data from Google Search Index and YouTube enabled it to train its large language model Gemini.

“YouTube provides an unparalleled set of video content; it hosts an estimated 14 billion videos. Google has access to such content; but other AI developers do not,” Microsoft said.

It said AI-powered voice assistants such as Google’s Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri give both companies an advantage.

“They are well-positioned to evolve and leverage their respective existing voice assistants into leadership positions in generative AI. New entrants and competitors of Google and Apple will not enjoy the same advantages,” Microsoft said.

Google hit back at Microsoft.

“We hope the Commission’s study will shine a light on companies that don’t offer the openness of Google Cloud or have a long history of locking-in customers – and who are bringing that same approach to AI services,” a Google spokesperson said.

Microsoft, whose more than $10 billion investment in OpenAI is now in EU antitrust regulators’ crosshairs, also sought to fend off regulatory worries about such partnerships between Big Tech and start-ups.

“All of these start-ups relied on different forms of investments and partnerships that enabled them to enter and expand in the space,” it said.

It pointed to Anthropic which has Google and Amazon as investors, France’s Mistral in which Microsoft has invested 15 billion euros and Canada’s Cohere which has Salesforce and Nvidia as investors.

“Encouraging pro-competitive partnerships in the AI space is an effective way to prevent companies from becoming vertically integrated in a manner that would result in an anticompetitive advantage,” Microsoft said.

Apple buys Canadian startup DarwinAI in a push to join generative AI race

Apple buys Canadian startup DarwinAI in a push to join generative AI race

Apple has bought artificial intelligence (AI) startup DarwinAI and added dozens of the Canadian company’s staffers to its AI division, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

The iPhone maker purchased the business earlier this year, the report stated, citing people familiar with the matter. The report did not mention the deal value.

The companies did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Apple has been slower in rolling out generative AI, which can generate human-like responses to written prompts, than rivals such as Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google , which are weaving them into products.

Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build DarwinAI’s business, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the deal, the report added.

DarwinAI has developed AI technology for visually inspecting components during the manufacturing process and serves customers in a range of industries, Bloomberg said.

Sora: OpenAI says it will release text-to-video AI model in a few months

Sora: OpenAI says it will release text-to-video AI model in a few months

OpenAI’s text-to-video generator AI model Sora will be available to the public in the coming months. Chief technology officer of OpenAI, Mira Murati, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal said that the AI powered video generation model will be made available to the public “definitely this year”, likely in “a few months.”

Responding to a question related to computational power required for Sora in comparison to company’s other products like ChatGPT and DALL-E, Murati said that the video generation model is currently a “research output” and is “much more expensive”. She added, the company is currently working on optimising Sora so that it could be made available to the public “at similar cost eventually to what we saw with DALL-E.”

Murati said that the company is considering “the issues of misinformation and harmful bias” that the video generator might cause, especially with the US election in November. “We will not be releasing anything that we don’t feel confident on when it comes to how it might affect global elections,” she added.

Sora is currently under the “Red Teaming” process, which is the testing stage where the AI tool is tested by people to identify vulnerabilities, biases and other harmful issues. Responding to questions regarding the limits of the model, Murati said that the company wants to keep consistency on their platform. She said that just like with the company’s image generator model DALL-E, Sora will likely have “a similar policy” such as restrictions on generating images of public figures.

Murati confirmed that “publicly available” videos and licensed video from Shuttershock were used as part of the training data for the video generation model. However, when asked if videos from YouTube, Facebook and Instagram were used in training, Murati said that if they were publicly available to use, they might have, but she cannot say with certainty.
