Meta Platforms targeted in privacy complaints by 8 EU consumer groups | World News – Business Standard

Critics say this amounts to users having to pay for their privacy. Users who do not mind advertisments can continue to use the services free of charge

Meta Platforms was hit with privacy complaints on Thursday as eight EU consumer groups asked watchdogs to act against the Facebook owner for alleged breaches of the bloc’s privacy rules when it collects user data.

The complaints by consumer groups in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Greece, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain to data protection authorities in their countries add to previous grievances over Meta’s trove of user data.

The consumer bodies said Meta is not complying with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules on fair processing, data minimisation and purpose limitation, with no legal basis to the company’s data collection and processing.

“Surveillance-based business models pose all kinds of problems under the GDPR and it’s time for data protection authorities to stop Meta’s unfair data processing and its infringing of people’s fundamental rights,” Ursula Pachl, deputy director general of the European Consumer Organisation, said in a statement.

She also criticised Meta’s recent launch of paid, advertisement-free subscriptions to Facebook and Instagram in Europe, which the company said aims to comply with new EU tech rules.

Critics say this amounts to users having to pay for their privacy. Users who do not mind advertisments can continue to use the services free of charge.

“Meta’s offer to consumers is smoke and mirrors to cover up what is, at its core, the same old hoovering up of all kinds of sensitive information about people’s lives, which it then monetises through its invasive advertising model,” Pachl said.

Meta said its subscription changes are a response to regulatory actions and court rulings.

“Subscription for no ads addresses the latest regulatory developments, guidance and judgments shared by leading European regulators and the courts over recent years,” a Meta spokesperson said.

“Specifically, it conforms to direction given by the highest court in Europe: in July, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) endorsed the subscriptions model as a way for people to consent to data processing for personalised advertising.”

Call of Duty Warzone Mobile set to launch globally on Mar 21: Know details | Tech News – Business Standard

Call of Duty Warzone Mobile set to launch globally on Mar 21: Know details | Tech News – Business Standard

Call of Duty Warzone Mobile

Microsoft-owned American video game developer Activision has announced that its next title under the Call of Duty moniker is set to launch on March 21. Called Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, the mobile-focused video game will be available for free on both iOS and Android platforms.

The company has started pre-registration for the video game on  callofduty.com/warzonemobile website. It is offering redeemable in-game rewards such as skin, weapon blueprint, vinyl, and more to players who register before the worldwide launch.

Activision has released a trailer for the Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile video game that shows visuals from the in-game map of Verdansk, besides confirming the launch date. Additionally, the company confirmed that the video game will feature the smaller Rebirth Island map alongside the large-scale Verdansk. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will feature various multiplayer maps such as Shipment and Shoot House apart from the main arenas.

According to the company, the Verdansk map on the Warzone Mobile holds a capacity for 120 players. It includes the Verdansk Gulag setting where eliminated players will spawn for a chance to get redeployed into the main game by eliminating rival players who were also knocked out. The smaller Rebirth Island map holds a capacity of 48 players and matchers here use Resurgence rules which lets eliminated players respawn as long as one of their teammates is still alive.

Another big takeaway from the announcement is that the upcoming smartphone game will support shared progression with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone on PC and gaming consoles. This essentially means that the XP (experience points) earned within the game will reflect across the mobile, PC, and console versions, allowing users to level up from either of the platforms. Apart from shared player level, players will also be able to share Weapon level progression across platforms. Additionally, in-game purchases on Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone video games (PC/console) such as Battle Pass, Stor Bundles, skins, weapon blueprints and more will be accessible within Warzone Mobile.

For players who wish to not use the on-screen control options for the game there will also be an option to use an external gaming controller.

Twitter, now known as 'X', launches audio, video features: How to use them | Tech News – Business Standard

Twitter, now known as 'X', launches audio, video features: How to use them | Tech News – Business Standard

Musk has been endorsing the audio, video features on the platform for a while now. (Photo: Bloomberg)

Elon Musk-owned microblogging site ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) launched new features, including audio and video calling options, the platform announced on Thursday.

“Audio and video calling are now available to everyone on X! Who are you calling first?” the social media site said.

Following the announcement, Musk also shared a post on the platform, saying that ‘X‘ users will soon have the option to have their pinned posts be visible to all their followers. “A change is coming to our recommendation algorithm that will ensure that all your followers see your pinned posts. This only applies to one pinned post every ~48 hours to prevent gaming of the system,” the CEO said.

Musk has been endorsing the audio, video features on the platform for a while now. Earlier in February, he even claimed that in the near future, he would discontinue his phone number and only use ‘X’ for texts and calls.

The features now make the platform an alternative option to Meta’s WhatsApp and other similar applications, which also allow internet-based audio and video calling, a highly popular feature among the users. The development appears to be in sync with Musk’s vision to turn ‘X’ into an “everything app” like China’s WeChat.

How to use audio, video calling features on X?

The use of features on the application is currently limited to mutuals. The prerequisite is to have interacted with a certain follower at least once on the application’s messages.

The users will also have the option to change the settings related to the features to control who can call them. The feature was earlier available to iOS users and to those who had a valid ‘X’ premium subscription.

To use these features, one has to open their ‘X’ app and move to the DM or direct messages section. A phone icon should appear, from where the users can tap the icons and make the calls to converse. The recipient will be intimated about the incoming call via a notification.

The feature is now rolling out for Android devices and is already available on iOS, Mac, desktop, and WhatsApp Web client.

How-to search by date
