Nothing says Phone 2a will be cheaper but deliver same quality as Phone (1) | Tech News – Business Standard

Nothing is gearing up for the Phone (2a) launch, which is scheduled for March 5. In a runup to the launch event, the London-based start-up did a candid Q&A session with CEO Carl Pei where he spoke his mind out about the smartphone segment in general and the thoughts that led to Phone (2a). In the conversation, Julie from the Nothing content team posed an interesting question to Carl.

Julie asked, “You’ve actually said on-record before that Phone (1) was not sold with a markup. So how can we make this phone cheaper, but still deliver the same quality.”

This is not the first time a parallel has been made between the upcoming Phone (2a) and the Phone (1). Earlier, the company said, “Phone (2a) leverages some of the most loved Phone (2) features, while ensuring a clear upgrade compared to Phone (1) on every front.”

This time, however, Nothing has officially hinted that the Phone (2a) will also be cheaper.

You can watch the complete 10-min session in the video embedded towards the end of this article.

Nothing has confirmed an in-person launch event in India for the Phone 2a.

“We’re pleased to invite our community members in Delhi to come and celebrate with us at our in-person keynote event on the evening of Tuesday 5th March,” Nothing said in a community post.

Redington expects demand for AI-enabled PCs powering tech upgrades | Tech News – Business Standard

Redington expects demand for AI-enabled PCs powering tech upgrades | Tech News – Business Standard

India’s Redington expects demand for personal computers to bounce back next financial year as customers are likely to warm up to new devices with artificial intelligence features, a top executive at the tech goods distributor said.

Global PC sales are showing signs of recovery after inflation-hit customers delayed system upgrades for several quarters, results of chipmakers including Samsung Electronics and Intel showed.

“The advent of AI, PCs will also drive tech refresh,” Redington’s Singapore, India and South Asia (SISA) CEO Ramesh Natarajan told Reuters, adding that he sees its PC business posting a single-digit percentage growth in fiscal 2025 in the region after reporting declines in the last six quarters.

AI-enabled PCs refer to machines that come with chips capable of running large-language models and apps powered by the technology directly on the device, instead of the cloud.

“Considering the replacement cycles for PCs have averaged around three to four years, we believe 2024 will be the year that will see some rebound,” said Neil Shah, vice president of research at Counterpoint Research.

SISA revenue from Redington’s end-point solutions unit, which distributes PCs and printers, fell 7 per cent to 100.72 billion rupees ($1.21 billion) in the nine months ended Dec. 31.

The segment, which accounts for about 15 per cent of the group’s total revenue, had gained during the pandemic when businesses and individuals spent heavily to set up home offices. But many are yet to upgrade.

Natarajan also expects more growth in Redington’s mobile phone business, which distributes smartphones from Apple, Google and others, as affluent Indians splurge on phones that cost more than 30,000 rupees ($361.30). The segment had seen a 61 per cent revenue jump in the first nine months of fiscal 2024 in the SISA region.

Redington has been sharpening its focus on its cloud services business to expand beyond gadget distribution, which brings in a bulk of its revenue.

US rivals beginning to use genAI in offensive cyber operations: Microsoft | World News – Business Standard

US rivals beginning to use genAI in offensive cyber operations: Microsoft | World News – Business Standard

Here are some examples Microsoft provided. In each case it said all generative AI accounts and assets of the named groups were disabled

Microsoft said Wednesday that U.S. adversaries chiefly Iran and North Korea and to a lesser extent Russia and China are beginning to use generative artificial intelligence to mount or organize offensive cyber operations.

The technology giant said it detected and disrupted, in collaboration with business partner OpenAI, threats that used or attempted to exploit AI technology they had developed.

In a blog post, the Redmond, Washington, company said the techniques were early-stage and neither particularly novel or unique but that it was important to expose them publicly as U.S. rivals leverage large-language models to expand their ability to breach networks and conduct influence operations.

Cybersecurity firms have long used machine-learning on defense, principally to detect anomalous behavior in networks. But criminals and offensive hackers use it as well, and the introduction of large-language models led by OpenAI’s ChatGPT upped that game of cat-and-mouse.

Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI, and Wednesday’s announcement coincided with its release of a report noting that generative AI is expected to enhance malicious social engineering, leading to more sophisticated deepfakes and voice cloning . A threat to democracy in a year where over 50 countries will conduct elections, magnifying disinformation and already occurring,

Here are some examples Microsoft provided. In each case it said all generative AI accounts and assets of the named groups were disabled:

The North Korean cyberespionage group known as Kimsuky has used the models to research foreign think tanks that study the country, and to generate content likely to be used in spear-phishing hacking campaigns.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has used large-language models to assist in social engineering, in troubleshooting software errors, and even in studying how intruders might evade detection in a compromised network. That includes generating phishing emails including one pretending to come from an international development agency and another attempting to lure prominent feminists to an attacker-built website on feminism. The AI helps accelerate and boost the email production.

The Russian GRU military intelligence unit known as Fancy Bear has used the models to research satellite and radar technologies that may relate to the war in Ukraine.

The Chinese cyberespionage group known as Aquatic Panda which targets a broad range of industries, higher education and governments from France to Malaysia has interacted with the models in ways that suggest a limited exploration of how LLMs can augment their technical operations.

The Chinese group Maverick Panda, which has targeted U.S. defense contractors among other sectors for more than a decade, had interactions with large-language models suggesting it was evaluating their effectiveness as a source of information on potentially sensitive topics, high profile individuals, regional geopolitics, US influence, and internal affairs.

In a separate blog published Wednesday, OpenAI said its current GPT-4 model chatbot offers “only limited, incremental capabilities for malicious cybersecurity tasks beyond what is already achievable with publicly available, non-AI powered tools.

Cybersecurity researchers expect that to change.

Last April, the director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Jen Easterly, told Congress that there are two epoch-defining threats and challenges. One is China, and the other is artificial intelligence.

Easterly said at the time that the U.S. needs to ensure AI is built with security in mind.

Critics of the public release of ChatGPT in November 2022 and subsequent releases by competitors including Google and Meta contend it was irresponsibly hasty, considering security was largely an afterthought in their development.

Of course bad actors are using large-language models that decision was made when Pandora’s Box was opened,” said Amit Yoran, CEO of the cybersecurity firm Tenable.

Some cybersecurity professionals complain about Microsoft’s creation and hawking of tools to address vulnerabilities in large-language models when it might more responsibly focus on making them more secure.

Why not create more secure black-box LLM foundation models instead of selling defensive tools for a problem they are helping to create?” asked Gary McGraw, a computer security veteran and co-founder of the Berryville Institute of Machine Learning.

NYU professor and former AT&T Chief Security Officer Edward Amoroso said that while the use of AI and large-language models may not pose an immediately obvious threat, they will eventually become one of the most powerful weapons in every nation-state military’s offense.

Started off with 600, Apple Vision Pro now has over 1000 dedicated apps | Tech News – Business Standard

Started off with 600, Apple Vision Pro now has over 1000 dedicated apps | Tech News – Business Standard

Apple Vision Pro now has over 1,000 dedicated spatial apps on the App Store. Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, Greg Joswiak in his post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) confirmed the numbers.

“A huge thank you to our developers! Their hard work has already resulted in over 1,000 incredible spatial apps designed specifically for Vision Pro,” wrote Joswiak. He said that the Vision Pro headset now supports over 1.5 million apps from the App Store. However, most of these are iPadOS apps that have been optimised to run on the headset.

Prior to Vision Pro’s launch in the US earlier this month, Apple had announced that the headset will feature more than 600 new apps and games that are specifically designed for the Vision Pro. The list of supported apps included entertainment apps and streaming platforms such as Disney Plus, productivity apps like OmniFocus, Jigspace, Microsoft Numerics, and a catalogue of games including NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition, Sonic Dream Team and more. The company has not yet confirmed about the new apps that have joined the list since in providing specialised apps for the Vision Pro.

Major app developers such as Google, Spotify and Netflix earlier declined to create a dedicated app for the headset and also opted-out to allow their iPad apps to work on the VisionPro. However, earlier this month, a Google’s spokesperson in a statement to The Verge confirmed that the company is planning to launch a dedicated YouTube app for the Apple Vision Pro headset. No specific launch date for the app has been announced but it has been confirmed that a dedicated YouTube app is under development.
