OPPO signs cross-licence agreement with Nokia to resolve patent dispute

OPPO signs cross-licence agreement with Nokia to resolve patent dispute

Following the agreement, both OPPO and Nokia will resolve all pending litigation in all jurisdictions

China’s OPPO and Finnish Nokia have signed a global patent cross-license agreement, ending the long-standing dispute over 5G patent portfolios. Both the companies have been involved in multiple lawsuits across multiple countries as OPPO failed to reach an agreement with Nokia for using their 5G patent technology. In some regions, OPPO had to halt the smartphone sale and delist many products from e-commerce platforms.

In a press note dated January 24, OPPO announced that it has signed a global patent cross-license agreement with Nokia covering standard-essential patents in 5G and other cellular communication technologies. The company also said that following the agreement, both OPPO and Nokia will resolve all pending litigation in all jurisdictions.

Commenting on the recent agreement between the two companies, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at OPPO, Feng Ying said, “We are pleased to have reached this global patent cross-license agreement with Nokia, which includes cross-licensing for 5G standard-essential patents. This agreement reflects the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property and lays the foundation for future collaboration between OPPO and Nokia. OPPO continues to advocate for reasonable royalty fees and a long-term approach to intellectual property that supports the resolution of disputes through amicable negotiations and mutual respect for the value of all intellectual property.”

President of Nokia Technologies, Jenni Lukander said that the cross-license agreement with OPPO reflects the mutual respect both the companies have for each other’s intellectual property. “The new agreement – along with the other major smartphone agreements we have concluded over the past year – will provide long-term financial stability to our licensing business,” he added.

iPhone takes top spot in China for first time in 2023 despite challenges

iPhone takes top spot in China for first time in 2023 despite challenges

By Vlad Savov

Apple Inc.’s iPhone was the top-selling smartphone series in China for the first time last year, a surprisingly strong showing in the face of fierce local competition and expanding government prohibitions against the American company’s technology.

The iPhone ranked first in shipments in the fourth quarter and 2023 overall, market tracker IDC said. It came after several analysts, including Jefferies, said iPhone sales tanked in the fourth quarter due to a lull in enthusiasm for the Cupertino, California company’s latest generation of hardware in the world’s biggest smartphone market. IDC also noted rising competition from domestic names like a resurgent Huawei Technologies Co., but timely discounts and promotions helped reduce the harm for Apple.

Success in the fourth quarter was largely a matter of declining less than competitors, the IDC data showed. For the year, Apple’s 2.2 per cent drop in 2023 was better than local rivals like Honor Device Co. and Vivo — both of which suffered double-digit slumps — and the overall 5 per cent fall in shipments.

The year marked the lowest volume of smartphones in China in a decade, due to a soft economic recovery and weak consumer sentiment, according to IDC. It was also highlighted by Huawei’s return to prominence with its Mate 60 series, catapulting it back into the top five makers in China in the holiday quarter, with a 36 per cent jump in shipments.

“Apple’s climb to the top spot in 2023, especially in light of renewed competition from Huawei and the soft spending sentiment, marks a tremendous success,” said IDC research analyst Arthur Gao. “Apple achieved this thanks to timely price promotions in its third-party channels, which stimulated demand.”

Apple also took the crown of the world’s biggest smartphone seller in 2023, after iPhone sales slumped less than Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy smartphones. Still, the iPhone 15 family of products is facing headwinds in sustaining demand in China, where analysts forecast sales will continue to weaken.

Chinese agencies and government-backed companies ordered staff to stop bringing iPhones and other foreign devices to work, Bloomberg News reported in December, expanding prohibitions against such technologies in sensitive sectors.

Google's Feature Drop brings 'Circle to Search' feature to Pixel 8 series

Google's Feature Drop brings 'Circle to Search' feature to Pixel 8 series

Google has announced the first feature drop of 2024 for the Pixel 8 series and a new Mint Green colourway for both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, according to The Verge. The new colour variants for the Pixel 8 series will be Google Store exclusive in the US, available starting January 25.

In the feature drop, Google has added the Circle to Search feature that it introduced on its partner Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series. For the uninitiated, the feature gets activated either by long-pressing the home button (button navigation) or swiping inwards from bottom corners (gesture navigation). Once activated, the user can use circle, highlight, or tap gesture on any visible item or object on the display to make a quick Google Lens search.

Besides the Circle to Search feature, Google updated the temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro to measure body temperature measurements. According to The Verge, Google described this feature as “medical-grade”. It could possibly be an indication that Google has received certification from a health regulatory body for the temperature sensor use. Important to note, such sensor-based reading is indicative and does not, in any way, be taken as true health and fitness measurements.

Nevertheless, Google has also added a few features for the older Pixel smartphones. The report stated that the Magic Compose feature that uses AI to rewrite a drafted message in different styles, would be making its way to the Pixel 6 or newer devices. The Nearby Share feature will be rebranded to Quick Share on all Android smartphones with version 6 or newer.

Lastly, Google is bringing automatic audio switching to Pixel Watch with this update. With this feature Pixel Watch users can switch their Pixel Buds Pro to any Pixel Phone or tablet while getting notified about the connection status on your watch.

Google to help fund Israeli artificial intelligence firms, Palestinian biz

Google to help fund Israeli artificial intelligence firms, Palestinian biz

Google is investing $8 million to support Israeli tech firms and Palestinian businesses, the Alphabet-owned group said on Wednesday, citing the need for small companies to secure financing during the Israel-Hamas war.

Google said its $4 million support fund would be provided to AI startups in Israel and another $4 million would go to early-stage Palestinian startups and businesses to help them continue operating.

The grant to Israeli AI startups will be in addition to the Israel Innovation Authority’s emergency fund that arose after the war broke out on Oct. 7, aimed at companies with a “short runway” of financing of up to six months.

“In the current situation, quite a few startups in Israel are struggling to raise capital from investors and urgently need financial bridging in order to continue operating,” Google said in a statement.

Google said it had offered to help maximize the potential success of some 20 startups, in AI solutions and services, with the exact number and size of the grants determined by the requests it receives.

Separately, in partnership with local and global non-profit organizations, it will provide loans and grants to 1,000 Palestinian small businesses.

It will also provide seed grants to 50 tech startups in Palestinian areas. In total it hopes to help safeguard 4,500 jobs and create new ones for Palestinians.

Google has also donated millions of dollars to Israeli emergency efforts, as well as to humanitarian relief support provided in Gaza.
