Google teams up with Samsung yet again, renames Nearby Share to Quick Share

Google teams up with Samsung yet again, renames Nearby Share to Quick Share

Software giant Google and South Korean electronics maker Samsung have announced collaboration to bring their peer-to-peer content sharing platforms into a singular cross-Android solution called Quick Share. Essentially, the Google Nearby Share has been renamed to Quick Share, which has now become the default platform built-in option for peer-to-peer content sharing across all types of devices in the Android and Chromebook ecosystems. To mark the change, Google has also updated the logo. Quick Share will start rolling out to current Nearby Share enabled devices next month, said Google.

Besides Quick Share, Google announced that it is extending Fast Pair support to the big screens. Google said Fast Pair support is expanding to Chromecast with Google TV from next month and will be available on more Google TV devices from later this year. Fast Pair is Google’s solution that enables quick wireless accessories (such as wireless headphones) discovery on supported platforms. Essentially, it allows you to quickly discover and connect nearby Bluetooth accessories with Android phones and Chromebooks.

Google also announced expanding Chromecast casting service to more apps and devices. TikTok is among the first apps that can now cast content from phone to Chromecast built-in devices. Google said it would soon enable LIVE videos cast service for TikTok.

Lastly, Google announced more interoperability across devices with Matter. For the uninitiated, Matter is an industry standard created to allow interoperability between smart devices irrespective of the maker. Google said it is helping more homes be ready for Matter.

“In the future, LG TVs and select Google TV and other Android TV OS devices will act as hubs for Google Home. So if you have a Nest Hub, Nest Mini or compatible TV, it’s easy to add Matter devices to your home network and locally control them with the Google Home app,” said Google.

Walmart experiments with AI to enhance customers' shopping experiences

Walmart experiments with AI to enhance customers' shopping experiences

Walmart has unveiled plans to dive further into the world of artificial intelligence — and drones — to improve its customers’ shopping experiences.

In a Tuesday keynote at trade show CES in Las Vegas, the nation’s largest retailer announced that it would be expanding its drone delivery to 1.8 million additional households in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area later this year. Drones aren’t new to Walmart — which has already completed 20,000 drone deliveries across seven states to date — but company leaders say that this expansion displays growing demand and efficiency. Walmart executives said no other rival has gotten this close to this type of drone concentration of households in a big metro market.

Among AI advances, Walmart announced a generative AI-powered search experience for iOS customers, which suggests relevant products for consumer queries ranging from football watch parties to bridal showers. The company also provided a glimpse into InHome Replenishment, which plans to use AI to learn consumers’ shopping habits and keep them stocked on their favorite groceries, as well as a beta platform that allows customers to create outfits virtually and get feedback from their friends.

Meanwhile Sam’s Club, which Walmart owns, has a new twist on checking out whether it’s with the scan and go technology, self-checkout or just using a traditional manned register. Instead of stopping at a cashier to show the receipt, cameras at the stores’ exits take a picture of what’s in shoppers’ carts and confirm purchases with the items they’ve paid. The camera technology is currently available in ten clubs so far, according to Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas, and is rolling out to the chain later this year.

Elliott Investment amasses about billion stake in Tinder owner: Report

Elliott Investment amasses about $1 billion stake in Tinder owner: Report

By Michael Hytha

Elliott Investment Management has built a stake of about $1 billion in Match Group Inc., the owner of Tinder, Hinge and other dating platforms, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The activist investor plans to push the online dating company to take steps to boost its stock price, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Elliott’s specific demands, and whether it plans to pursue nominating director candidates, couldn’t be learned, the report said.

“Our team regularly engages with investors and will continue to work to create great experiences for our users and value for our shareholders,” a spokesperson for Match Group said, declining to comment specifically on Elliott.

Shares of Dallas-based Match Group have fallen 10.5% in the past year, leaving it with a market value of about $10.3 billion.

Match rival Bumble Inc. has fared even worse, with its stock dropping 28% in the past year. Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd said in November she was stepping down as chief executive officer.

Amazon debuts video-streaming for its TV hardware that rivals Apple AirPlay

Amazon debuts video-streaming for its TV hardware that rivals Apple AirPlay

By Mark Gurman

Amazon.com Inc. introduced a new feature that mimics Apple Inc.’s AirPlay while working across different platforms, setting the stage for iPhone and Android users to wirelessly stream video to its TV hardware.

The feature, called Matter Casting, is part of a push by Amazon to create interoperable services — an alternative to the propriety technology developed by Apple and Google. It will make it easier for iOS and Android phones to send video to Amazon devices, such as its Fire TV boxes and sticks, as well as the Echo Show 15 smart display.

For years, Apple’s AirPlay and Google’s Cast have offered this capability, letting users enjoy video from their phones on a large TV screen. But those systems don’t always work smoothly across platforms. Amazon also was at a disadvantage because it doesn’t have its own smartphone.

The new system — unveiled Tuesday at the CES conference in Las Vegas — will initially just send content from Amazon’s Prime Video app to Echo Show devices. Matter Casting will begin supporting Fire TV technology within “months,” the company said.

By later this year, the feature will work with a range of other video services, including Plex, Pluto TV, Sling TV, Starz and ZDF, Amazon said.

Apple and Google weren’t part of the Matter Casting announcement, but the three technology giants worked together on supporting the Matter standard for smart home appliances. That system allows an Apple user to, say, tap into smart home hardware designed for Amazon’s ecosystem.

The hope is to do the same for TV technology. Though Amazon previously allowed streaming from its video app to its hardware, it didn’t use the Matter system. With the new approach, Amazon sees the potential to make video-streaming apps and TV devices work seamlessly across the whole Apple, Google and Amazon lineups.

Meta to restrict more content targeting teens on Instagram, Facebook

Meta to restrict more content targeting teens on Instagram, Facebook

Meta Platforms said on Tuesday it would hide more content from teens on Instagram and Facebook, after regulators around the globe pressed the social media giant to enhance protections for children on its platforms.

All teens will now be placed into the most restrictive content control settings on Instagram and Facebook and additional search terms will be limited on the photo-sharing app, Meta said in a blogpost.

The move will make it more difficult for teens to come across potentially sensitive content or accounts when they use features such as Search and Explore on Instagram.

Dozens of US states filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms and Instagram in October, accusing them of fueling a youth mental health crisis by making their social media platforms addictive.

Meta is also under the scanner in Europe, where the European Commission has sought information on how the social media company protects children from illegal and harmful content.
