India fastest growing premium smartphone market globally in 2023: Report

India fastest growing premium smartphone market globally in 2023: Report

Counterpoint said the global premium smartphone market’s sales are likely to grow by six per cent year-on-year in 2023

China, India, Middle East and Africa regions, and Latin America are likely to see a new record for premium market sales, with India being the fastest-growing premium market globally, noted the industry tracker Counterpoint in its report on global premium smartphone market in 2023. According to the report, it is the ultra-premium segment that is driving the growth – $1,000 and above price segment has captured over one-third of the total premium market sales in 2023.

“There has been a shift in consumer buying patterns in the smartphone market. Considering the importance a smartphone holds, consumers are willing to spend more to get a high-quality device that they can use for a longer period.  Owning the latest and greatest flagships has also become a status symbol for many consumers, especially in emerging markets where they are jumping directly from the mid-price band to the premium band. Further, these devices are increasingly becoming more affordable due to promotion seasons and financing options,” said Varun Mishra, Senior Analyst, Counterpoint.

Globally, Apple continued to dominate the premium segment in 2023, but its market share has dropped from 75 per cent in 2022 to 71 per cent in 2023. Counterpoint said the decline in Apple’s market share has been driven by Huawei’s resurgence in China with its Mate 60 series smartphones.

Samsung maintained its position in the global premium market at number two position as it expanded market share to 17 per cent in 2023, compared to 16 per cent in previous year, driven by its Galaxy S23 series and Foldable series. According to the report, foldables have emerged as a differentiator in the premium market.

Counterpoint said the global premium smartphone market’s sales are likely to grow by six per cent year-on-year in 2023. The premium segment smartphones are expected to capture about one-fourth of the global smartphone market sales and around 60 per cent of total revenues in 2023. Within the premium smartphone market, the ultra-premium segment ($1,000 and above) has over one-third of the total premium market sales in 2023.

The report added that the premium smartphone segment is projected to continue to outgrow the global smartphone market.

WhatsApp backup to count towards GDrive storage soon for Android users

WhatsApp backup to count towards GDrive storage soon for Android users

WhatsApp’s chat backups on Google Drive for Android devices would soon count towards cloud storage, as announced by both Google and WhatsApp in November last year. According to news reports, chat backup for Meta-owned messaging platform has now started to count against Google account storage for select users as part of beta testing.

It essentially means WhatsApp users can take cloud backup on Google Drive as long as there is sufficient storage available. If the user exhausts their storage limit, they will have to free up space or subscribe for more storage to resume backups. To reduce the size of the backup, WhatsApp provides an option that allows users to take a backup of chats without saving shared images and videos to their GDrive.

WhatsApp has a built-in option to transfer chats data from Android to Android without the need of taking backup. Called WhatsApp Chat Transfer, the feature require both Android devices to have the Wi-Fi turned on. Network connectivity is not necessary for transferring WhatsApp data using this tool.

Samsung aims to replicate human vision by integrating AI in camera sensors

Samsung aims to replicate human vision by integrating AI in camera sensors

South Korean electronics maker Samsung is reportedly planning to incorporate a dedicated chip responsible for artificial intelligence duties directly into its camera sensors. According to a report by Business Korea, Samsung is working on incorporating AI into its camera image sensors while aiming to create sensors capable of sensing and replicating human senses in the long term. Samsung is calling this “Humanoid Sensors” internally and would likely incorporate the technology into its devices earliest by 2027.

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix had also revealed its camera sensor with integrated AI processing chip during its Tech Summit in 2023.

Unlike traditional camera sensors that feed information to a device’s CPU for image processing, AI camera sensors use an integrated chip with AI capabilities to process data directly at the sensor level. Incorporating AI into imaging sensors is expected to result in improving image quality while lowering both latency and power consumption. It could also result in better face and object recognition capabilities.

While the AI integrated camera sensors are part of Samsung long term ambitions, the company is reported to bring AI-tools – similar to the Google Pixel 8 series – on its Galaxy series smartphone. These new AI features would likely include a new tool to generate wallpaper using combinations of keywords, ability to relocate objects in an image using AI and a feature that will let users expand a picture beyond its actual borders. Samsung Notes app is also expected to be treated with AI for the ability to auto-format big paragraphs and generate summary for the same when prompted.
