Rebranded Nearby Share, battery health indicator and more coming to Android


Google is reportedly rebranding its Nearby Share feature to Quick Share on Android devices. According to a report by 9To5Google, Android’s files sharing feature will likely get a new icon and will be renamed to Quick Share in the coming weeks. According to the report, the latest beta version of Google Play services informs about the change through a notification.


“Nearby Share is now Quick Share. Look for the new name and icon to share with nearby devices,” the notification reads. The new icon consists of “two arrows pointing at each other with semi-circular tails”. The change is likely only for the appearance as the service reportedly functions as the same.


While the Quick Share is currently part of the beta version of Google Play services, available to select users, it is expected to roll out for general users in the coming weeks.


Another feature coming to Android is Battery Health Indicator. Android Authority reported that a new ‘Battery health’ page  has been added to the latest version of Settings Services app on Android 14 QPR2 beta 2. With Pixel Feature Drop earlier this month, Google added a Battery Information page under the About Phone section in Settings. This page currently displays the manufacture date and cycle count of the battery.


According to the report, the new page will display information about the estimated percentage of charge the battery can currently hold compared to when it was new. The new feature will notify users when either the battery capacity is degraded or cannot be detected, making it easier for the user to track the battery life on their Android device.


The feature is currently under development and there is no official confirmation regarding the roll-out plan.

Furthermore, the headphones do not compromise on essential functionalities, boasting multi-purpose power and volume controls, concurrent connectivity with two devices, a selection of four sound modes, and the added utility of serving as an accessory for voice calls with its external boom microphone.


In terms of design, the Sonic Lamb Headphones adopt the over-ear configuration, incorporating soft cushioning on the ear pads and a silicone lining on the headband. While the plush ear cups offer a secure fit, they allow ambient noise to pass through. A slightly denser composition for the ear cups could enhance noise cancellation, a feature absent due to the lack of active noise cancellation. The non-collapsible design, however, impedes portability. Nevertheless, the headphones maintain a lightweight construction, ensuring comfort even during prolonged usage.


Navigating the functions of the Sonic Lamb Headphones is straightforward, notwithstanding the absence of app support. However, the headphones are tailored for right-handed users, with all operational elements situated on the right ear dome. This includes power and volume buttons, a rotating wheel for sound mode selection, a USB-C port for charging and audio input, a proprietary port for the external boom microphone (included in the package), a microphone, and an LED light indicator.

Most other headphones use a dynamic single audio drivers, which do the job but not always deliver an optimal experience one get in certain settings, such as concerts, cinemas, or home theatres. The Sonic Lamb Headphones have a full-range dynamic audio driver paired with its proprietary impulse driver. It is essentially a hybrid set-up to reproduce sound accurately across frequencies. However, the pronounced thumping effect produced by the impulse driver may be overwhelming for general use. Herein lies the significance of the four sound modes – hear, feel, immerse, and beast. Although the soundstage remains consistent across modes, each setting fine-tunes the impulse driver for bass, with minimal mechanical impulse in hear mode and an intense throb in the beast mode. The mode transition, facilitated by the intuitive rotating wheel on the right ear dome, is seamless, requiring only a few seconds.


In terms of battery life, the Sonic Lamb Headphones offer a modest duration, particularly in the power-intensive beast mode, providing approximately five hours of usage. Unfortunately, the charging duration is a notable drawback, necessitating around two hours for a full recharge with the supplied USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable.

According to estimates by Oxford Economics, over 700,000 creators and partners in India have found their financial anchor in YouTube, receiving income from their presence on the platform, said the video streaming giant in a blog post on Thursday while announcing ‘BrandConnect’ and ‘Podcasts’ features for creators in India.


BrandConnect, YouTube’s branded content platform, will be available to eligible creators and select advertisers in India. It will enable smoother communication between brands and creators on the platform.


“It (BrandConnect) will help brands execute their branded content campaigns more seamlessly by identifying the right mix and profile of creators to work with, while creators will have a new avenue to be discovered and earn more from their content,” YouTube announced in a blog post.


In India, the number of channels that earned a majority of revenue from Fan Funding products in December 2022 saw an increase of over 10 per cent compared to the prior year, said the video sharing platform.


Additionally, in the latest YouTube Studio updates, the process of podcast publication is going to be streamlined, and the introduction of Podcast shelves on the YouTube Music homepage will help in enhancing discoverability for audiences and elevate creator engagement.


“With podcasts available for on-demand, offline & background listening on YouTube Music in India, it unlocks the opportunity to earn more on the platform via ads and subscriptions,” reads the official website.


Earlier this year, YouTube introduced new creative tools on Shorts and announced upcoming Gen AI features for the creators. “Shorts opened the door for anyone to become a creator, but AI can take this even further by making creation even easier (and more fun),” read the blog post.


It also expanded the eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to include shorts creators and rolled out ad revenue sharing for shorts, while introducing earlier access to fan funding features like channel memberships, super chat, and more.

Every three minutes, someone in India enrolled in GenAI content on Coursera in 2023, says the annual study of learner trends released by the platform on Thursday.


Based on data from over 22.2 million registered learners in India, the study highlighted a huge surge in interest for GenAI content across the country, with searches growing fourfold compared to the previous year.


“To meet this demand, leading global university and industry educators launched 35+ courses or projects on genAI on Coursera, resulting in 196,000 enrollments in the country,” read the press release.


‘Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT’ course by Vanderbilt University was the top GenAI course in India in 2023.


“In 2023, India’s passion for learning soared on Coursera. The interest in GenAI, leadership, tech, and data skills not only reflects the learners’ thirst for cutting-edge knowledge but also their commitment to staying at the forefront of the digital revolution,” said Raghav Gupta, Managing Director, India and APAC, Coursera.


The 2023 data released by the online course provider shows that Indian learners are particularly enthusiastic about courses that provide high-demand technology and data science skills.


‘Generative AI for everyone’ by Andrew Ng became the fastest-growing course on the platform for 2023 and had the second-highest number of enrollments from India.


“In the year ahead, we’re excited to use GenAI to transform education, providing personalised, engaging and inclusive learning. The renewed focus on lifelong learning, tech and human skills, and blended learning on campuses will be the key to employability in the AI-driven world,” added Gupta.


While the most popular course in India was Google’s Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere, the second most preferred course amongst Indians was IIM Ahmedabad’s Leadership Skills, covering topics such as influence, authority, power dynamics, stress management, and lessons from the Mahabharata.


Courses on machine learning, python and artificial intelligence were also among the top 10 choices for Indian learners.


Google Cloud’s ‘Introduction to Generative AI’ and ‘Generative AI with LLM’ by Amazon AWS and DeepLearning.AI were the second and third most popular Generative AI courses in India.

Japanese video game publisher Capcom has officially launched the Resident Evil 4 for Apple devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphones. At the launch of the iPhone 15 series, Apple announced that its A17 Pro chip on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are capable of running console-level games like Resident Evil 4. Along with iPhone 15 Pro models, iPad Pro M1 and iPad Pro M2, and Macs with M1, M2 and M3 chips support Capcom’s Resident Evil 4.


The App Store listing for the game states that the video game requires 70GB of on-device storage space. It also states that a limited part of the base game can be played for free while full access will require in-app purchase. Capcom has stated that saved data within the game cannot be shared between MacOS and iOS devices.
