Sony PlayStation VR2: Details

The headset features two OLED displays for 4K HDR visuals at up to 120 frames-per-second. The PS VR2 comes with intelligent eye tracking technology, which uses two IR cameras (one for each eye) to track players eye movements for more realistic and personal in-game interactions.

The PlayStation VR2 sports four embedded cameras for headset and controller tracking that offers a field of view of approximately 110 degrees.

For audio, the headset boasts Tempest 3D AudioTech that allows in-game audio to adapt to players position and head movement. The headset features a built-in motor that creates responsive headset vibrations adding tactile elements to gameplay – for example vibrations for an arrow flying past the players head.

The headset comes with dual PlayStation VR2 sense controllers with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that add dynamic resistance to each controller. The sense controllers support precision tracking and finger touch detection that detects the placement of fingers even when the player is not pressing a button.

It should be noted that the PlayStation VR2 headset cannot be used as a standalone device. The headset needs to be connected to a PlayStation 5 gaming console using the USB Type-C port on the VR2 headset.

51% Indians believe AI will help improve productivity at work: PwC survey

51% Indians believe AI will help improve productivity at work: PwC survey

Fifty-one per cent of Indians believe that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help them improve productivity at work, according to a new survey by PwC titled “India Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2023”, released on Monday. India’s average is higher than the global average, where 31 per cent believe AI will benefit them at work.

The survey also highlighted that 62 per cent of Indians believe that the skills required for their jobs will change significantly over the next five years as compared to 36 per cent globally. Moreover, 69 per cent of these Indians know how the requirements will change.

“Most Indian leaders are aware of the criticality to transform their workforce for the future success of their businesses. Similarly, as their work and workplace are undergoing significant changes, employees in India are highly aware of the urgency to upskill, it increasingly becoming an important factor in their career decisions,” said Kartik Rishi, partner at PwC India.

“However, organisations continue to adopt a much lesser focus on skills, especially those for the future, in their talent strategies and programs. Adopting a forward-looking, skills-first approach, which is integrated into their business processes will be a key factor for leaders in sustaining businesses over the next decade.”

Twenty-four per cent of Indians, however, said that AI would negatively impact their work. Globally, the percentage of people who believe this is 14 per cent. Furthermore, 21 per cent of Indian respondents believed AI would take over their jobs as compared to 13 per cent of the global respondents.

The report also highlighted that the Indian workforce is restless, with 42 per cent of employees indicating that they are likely to change jobs in the next year due to expectations of better pay packages and promotions as compared to 26 per cent globally.

Additionally, 70 per cent of Indian participants, as against 35 per cent of their global counterparts, are willing to ask for a promotion. While a significant amount of organisational efforts are focussed on the younger generation, the survey found that managers and senior executives will also need attention.

“The workforce is not settling with a competitive compensation only – which continues to be a hygiene – but also a deeper job satisfaction, and faster growth opportunities to fulfil their aspirations,” said Anumeha Singh, partner at PwC India.

“To thrive, organisations and leaders will need to make some tough choices while blending adaptability with innovative workforce structures and career pathways, for an ever-evolving landscape.”

Next-gen iPad Pro, iPad Air to debut in March as Apple plans lineup upgrade

Next-gen iPad Pro, iPad Air to debut in March as Apple plans lineup upgrade

Representative Image: iPad Air 2022

Apple is expected to revamp its entire iPad lineup in 2024. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the American tech giant is expected to upgrade all the iPad models throughout next year. In the lineup, the next-gen iPad Pro and iPad Air are expected to arrive as early as March. These two models would be followed by iPad and iPad mini in later months.

According to Gurman, the next-generation iPad Pro would likely get an updated design to accommodate a bigger display size. The upcoming iPad Pro is expected to come in 11-inch and 13-inch display configurations, both featuring OLED panels. The tablet is likely to be powered by Apple’s latest M3 chip and support revamped Magic Keyboard attachment.

Gurman said that the mid-tier iPad Air is also expected to get an overhaul with 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes. The iPad Air would likely feature a M2 processor, making it superior to the lower-end 10th generation iPad models that may get updated later in the year.

With the 11th generation iPad, Apple plans to phase out the ninth-generation of baseline iPad that is the last to feature the home button. This would also let Apple discontinue some of its older generation accessories that support the ninth-generation iPad.

The iPad mini is also expected to get a refresh with a new processor. Previously, Gurman said that the next-generation of compact iPad mini would be powered by the A16 Bionic chip.

Beyond iPads, Apple would release its highly-anticipated mixed-reality headset the Vision Pro early in 2024. According to reports, Apple has started inviting retail employees from its US stores to Cupertino, California, to receive Vision Pro training. The mixed-reality headset is expected to launch in March in the US and will be gradually introduced in other regions.

Apps that use AI to undress women in photos gaining popularity: Report

Apps that use AI to undress women in photos gaining popularity: Report

By Margi Murphy

Apps and websites that use artificial intelligence to undress women in photos are soaring in popularity, according to researchers.

In September alone, 24 million people visited undressing websites, the social network analysis company Graphika found.

Many of these undressing, or “nudify,” services use popular social networks for marketing, according to Graphika. For instance, since the beginning of this year, the number of links advertising undressing apps increased more than 2,400% on social media, including on X and Reddit, the researchers said. The services use AI to recreate an image so that the person is nude. Many of the services only work on women.

These apps are part of a worrying trend of non-consensual pornography being developed and distributed because of advances in artificial intelligence — a type of fabricated media known as deepfake pornography. Its proliferation runs into serious legal and ethical hurdles, as the images are often taken from social media and distributed without the consent, control or knowledge of the subject.

The rise in popularity corresponds to the release of several open source diffusion models, or artificial intelligence that can create images that are far superior to those created just a few years ago, Graphika said. Because they are open source, the models that the app developers use are available for free.

“You can create something that actually looks realistic,” said Santiago Lakatos, an analyst at Graphika, noting that previous deepfakes were often blurry.

One image posted to X advertising an undressing app used language that suggests customers could create nude images and then send them to the person whose image was digitally undressed, inciting harassment. One of the apps, meanwhile, has paid for sponsored content on Google’s YouTube, and appears first when searching with the word “nudify.”

A Google spokesperson said the company doesn’t allow ads “that contain sexually explicit content.”

“We’ve reviewed the ads in question and are removing those that violate our policies,” the company said.

A Reddit spokesperson said the site prohibits any non-consensual sharing of faked sexually explicit material and had banned several domains as a result of the research. X didn’t respond to a request for comment.

In addition to the rise in traffic, the services, some of which charge $9.99 a month, claim on their websites that they are attracting a lot of customers. “They are doing a lot of business,” Lakatos said. Describing one of the undressing apps, he said, “If you take them at their word, their website advertises that it has more than a thousand users per day.”

Non-consensual pornography of public figures has long been a scourge of the internet, but privacy experts are growing concerned that advances in AI technology have made deepfake software easier and more effective.

“We are seeing more and more of this being done by ordinary people with ordinary targets,” said Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “You see it among high school children and people who are in college.”

Many victims never find out about the images, but even those who do may struggle to get law enforcement to investigate or to find funds to pursue legal action, Galperin said.

There is currently no federal law banning the creation of deepfake pornography, though the US government does outlaw generation of these kinds of images of minors. In November, a North Carolina child psychiatrist was sentenced to 40 years in prison for using undressing apps on photos of his patients, the first prosecution of its kind under law banning deepfake generation of child sexual abuse material.

TikTok has blocked the keyword “undress,” a popular search term associated with the services, warning anyone searching for the word that it “may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines,” according to the app. A TikTok representative declined to elaborate. In response to questions, Meta Platforms Inc. also began blocking key words associated with searching for undressing apps. A spokesperson declined to comment.

Apple's iPhone, watch product design chief Tang Tan to leave in shake-up

Apple's iPhone, watch product design chief Tang Tan to leave in shake-up

By Mark Gurman

The Apple Inc. executive in charge of product design for the iPhone and smartwatch is stepping down, bringing a shake-up to the company’s most critical product lines.

Tang Tan, whose title is vice president of product design, is leaving in February, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified because the move isn’t public. Tan reports to John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, and the division is reshuffling duties to handle the transition.

New Apple Products Go On Sale At Fifth Avenue Store

The executive in charge of product design for the iPhone and other Apple devices is leaving the company.

Several deputies to Ternus and Tan are getting expanded roles as part of the changes. That includes Richard Dinh, Tan’s top lieutenant and head of iPhone product design. Dinh is being elevated to report directly to Ternus. Kate Bergeron, a hardware engineering executive responsible for Mac teams, is taking over the design of the Apple Watch.

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment on the changes.

The iPhone and Apple Watch are central to Apple’s operations, accounting for well over half of the tech giant’s $383.3 billion in revenue last year. Tan also was responsible for the design of accessories and oversaw the company’s acoustics team, which handles much of the development of the AirPods. Those two groups are being relocated under Matthew Costello, who is in charge of Beats and the HomePod smart speaker.

People familiar with Apple’s operations say the Tan departure is a blow, and that he made critical decisions about Apple’s most important products. Beyond the iPhone, his work on the Watch and AirPods helped turn those devices into major growth drivers for the Cupertino, California-based company.

Under Apple’s organizational structure, the product design team works closely with its industrial design and operations groups. Tan’s team has tight control over product features, including the look of devices and how they’re engineered.

John Ternus has reorganized the hardware engineering group, which he has overseen since 2021.

Tan is the second senior executive to announce departure plans recently. Bloomberg News reported earlier this week that Steve Hotelling — a vice president in charge of hardware technologies like Touch ID, Face ID and displays — is retiring. Hotelling reported to Johny Srouji, senior vice president of hardware technologies.

It’s also at least the third exit in a year from Ternus’ organization. Yannick Bertolus, who was once in charge of hardware product quality and later ran hardware product management, recently retired. His predecessor in the latter role, Laura Legros, left at the end of last year.

Ternus, who took charge of hardware engineering in 2021, recently shuffled other parts of the organization. He elevated Dan West — formerly the No. 2 executive for hardware quality — to a new non-product role reporting to him. Other executives in charge of Mac product design and iPhone hardware systems were also promoted, suggesting that Apple could be preparing for more leadership changes in the coming year.
