'Hurt and angry': Sam Altman opens up about OpenAI board's failed coup

'Hurt and angry': Sam Altman opens up about OpenAI board's failed coup

“It took me a few minutes to snap out of it and get over the ego and emotions,” said Sam Altman in an interview with The Verge when asked how he felt when the OpenAI board asked him to return a day after firing him.

On November 17, the Board of the OpenAI announced that the company is parting ways with Altman, also a co-founder and one of the most prominent figures in the AI ecosystem, after losing confidence in him as a leader.

Upon his reappointment as the chief executive officer (CEO) later that week, Altman sacked the Board involved in firing him, ending a failed attempted boardroom coup that lasted five days.

Now that things are returning to usual at the office, Sam Altman has opened up in an interview with The Verge, detailing what occurred behind the scenes.

In his interview, Altman revealed that his immediate reaction “was sort of one of defiance”. He added that he felt hurt and angry after he had poured his life force into the company and the mission of safe and beneficial AGI for the last four and a half years. When asked how he felt when he was asked to come back to the office, Altman said it took him a few minutes to get over his ego and emotions before accepting the offer.

Reacting to employee support for him during the entire saga, Altman said, “Definitely we have come through this with a stronger and more unified and focused and committed team.” He added that the team had great conviction and focus before, and now that has increased many folds.

Sharing his thoughts on the whole saga, the OpenAI CEO said that he still doesn’t have a clear picture of the whole situation and the reason he was initially fired for. “The Board is going to do an independent review which I very much welcome. I don’t have much else to say now, but I’m looking forward to learning more,” Altman said. He admitted that there was a problem with the governance structure within the organisation, which will need time to fix.

Altman refused to comment on a question about the alleged Q* model breakthrough. However, he said that the company expects progress in this technology to be rapid and also that they expect to continue to work very hard to figure out how to make AI safe and beneficial. “Without commenting on any specific thing or project or whatever, we believe that progress is research. You can always hit a wall, but we expect that progress will continue to be significant.” Altman concluded.

All four iPhone 16 models to feature solid-state Action Button: Report

All four iPhone 16 models to feature solid-state Action Button: Report

Photo: Mute switch on iPhone 15

All four iPhone 16 models — iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max — will all feature the Action button, according to a report by 9To5Mac. It is expected that the Action Button that replaced the physical mute switch from the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max this year will debut on the vanilla iPhone models next year.

In addition to this, the report stated that Apple is planning to transition the action button to a solid-state button. For the uninitiated, solid-state buttons are capacitive buttons backed by haptic feedback for a mechanical button-like clicking experience.

The report also mentioned that the new capacitive Action Button will purportedly be able to detect “changes in pressure” using a new force sensor.

The Action button offers more customisation options than the classic mute switch and comes with preset functions, including silent mode, focus mode, camera with support for various modes, torch, voice memo, magnifier and accessibility features. Additionally, the Action button can be configured alongside Apple Shortcuts to offer more personalisation options to the user.

In its current state, the action button employs a press-and-hold gesture, accompanied by haptic feedback and visual cues in the Dynamic Island to confirm actions.

Earlier, MacRumors reported that the iPhone 16 would likely feature an additional button. Apple has reportedly named it “Capture Button” internally. Its functionality remains unclear at the moment, but the button is expected to be located below the power button and will likely be capacitive in nature.

According to the report, Apple would move the mmWave antenna responsible for operating 5G frequency waves at short distances to the left side of the smartphone, freeing up space for an additional button on the right side.

WhatsApp brings Secret Code, a new way to lock personal chats: Details here

WhatsApp brings Secret Code, a new way to lock personal chats: Details here

WhatsApp has announced Secret Code, an additional way to protect private chats on the Meta-owned messaging platform.

In a blogpost, WhatsApp said, “ With a secret code, you’ll now be able to set a unique password different from what you use to unlock your phone to give your locked chats an extra layer of privacy.”

With this new feature, users will have the option to hide the Locked Chats folder from their chatlist so that they can only be discovered by typing a designated secret code in the search bar. Users can still choose to use the traditional Chat Lock feature, which was rolled-out earlier this year. Additionally, WhatsApp Chat can now be locked directly by long pressing a new chat rather than visiting the chat’s settings.

The new privacy feature has started to roll out for select users starting today, while it will be available globally in the coming months.

Recently, WhatsApp has been adding new privacy options to its application. Earlier this month, the messaging app on Android and iOS got a Privacy Checkup feature that lets users monitor and choose the level of protection they want all in one place.

WhatsApp has also started rolling out a new feature that lets users hide IP addresses on phone calls. The optional feature lets users enable the “Protect IP address in calls” option through the advanced settings menu under the Privacy section.

After Elon Musk tirade, X faces prospect of more advertisers fleeing

After Elon Musk tirade, X faces prospect of more advertisers fleeing

Social media company X faces the prospect of more advertisers fleeing and has no clear fix in sight, ad industry experts said, after billionaire owner Elon Musk lashed out at some of the biggest brands for dropping the platform.

Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery suspended advertising on X earlier this month following Musk’s endorsement of an antisemitic post that falsely claimed members of the Jewish community were stoking hatred against white people.

After apologizing for his post while speaking at a New York Times DealBook event on Wednesday, Musk unleashed a profanity-laced tirade against advertisers for fleeing the platform and accused the brands of “blackmail.” He appeared to single out Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger, who spoke earlier at the event and said an association with X was “was not a positive one for us.”

“Companies need to protect the brands they work for,” said Lou Paskalis, founder of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory and former head of global media at Bank of America. “This isn’t advertisers getting together in a secret clubhouse to support an agenda.”

In a memo to employees on Thursday, which was seen by Reuters, X Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino said Musk’s interview was “candid and profound,” and encouraged staff to watch it. She reiterated that X’s mission is to be an open platform without censorship.

“Our principles do not have a price tag, nor will they be compromised – ever,” the memo said.

The Tesla chief also acknowledged that an extended boycott by advertisers could bankrupt X, formerly Twitter, but suggested that the public would blame the brands and not him for a potential collapse.

However, Insider Intelligence analyst Jasmine Enberg said: “If anyone is killing X, it’s Elon Musk – not advertisers.” “Should X collapse, an autopsy would reveal a series of platform policy decisions, staffing cuts, tweets and antagonistic comments by Musk that have driven away X’s primary source of revenue,” Enberg said.

An executive at a major global ad-buying firm, who declined to be named, said only one major client was continuing to advertise on X.

“(Musk) seems to be hell bent on destroying the platform,” the executive said.

X risks not only losing corporate advertisers, but also money from political candidates, a revenue stream that reopened after the platform lifted a ban on political ads. U.S. political ad spending in 2024 – when a presidential election will be held – is expected to reach a record $10.2 billion, according to AdImpact, which tracks political ads.

Mike Nellis, CEO of Authentic, a digital marketing agency that works with Democratic candidates including U.S. President Joe Biden, said he planned to speak with all his clients about whether or not to spend on X.

“Telling major advertisers and Bob Iger to go F themselves might be the final nail in the coffin,” Nellis said.

X has come under fire for lax content moderation, especially from advertisers who do not want their ads appearing next to inappropriate content.

Ad spending on X in the United States from January through October this year declined 64%, compared with the same period in 2022, according to data from media analytics firm Guideline, which tracks advertising spending data from major ad agencies.

“We believe there is a risk that more companies will stop advertising on X; at least on a short-term basis,” D.A. Davidson & Co analyst Tom Forte said.

“It is fair to say this makes the company’s subscription efforts more important and potentially means it may need more than half its revenue to come from subscriptions,” he said.

U.S. monthly active users also declined by about 19% since Musk acquired Twitter last year, according to research firm Data.ai.

Apple, IBM, Sony , Disney, Comcast including NBC Universal, and Paramount collectively accounted for 7% of total U.S. ad spend on X through October this year, Sensor Tower data showed.

At a dinner hosted by the New York Times following the DealBook Summit on Wednesday, guests that included representatives of major brands were “aghast” at witnessing Musk’s expletives against advertisers, said one attendee who declined to be named.

One sentiment seemed to be shared among brand representatives in discussing X: “It’s obvious (Musk) doesn’t want us there and we don’t want to be there,” the attendee said.
