OneWeb gets regulatory approval to launch satellite broadband services

OneWeb India on Tuesday obtained the necessary authorisations from IN-SPACe to launch Eutelsat OneWeb’s commercial satellite broadband services in India.

OneWeb India is the first organisation to receive this authorisation. Eutelsat OneWeb, the low Earth orbit (LEO) operator, is part of Eutelsat Group.

IN-SPACe is the agency of the Government of India responsible for regulating space activities and granting authorisation for conducting space activities in the country. This authorisation means Eutelsat OneWeb can launch commercial connectivity services as soon as spectrum allocation is granted by the government.

“We are pleased to note the Indian space regulator’s green light to launch Eutelsat OneWeb’s commercial satellite broadband services in India. This will be a critical step forward to meet India’s ambition of providing internet connectivity for all and will enable the Prime Minister’s vision of Digital India. Eutelsat OneWeb is ready to deploy as soon as it receives the final spectrum authorisation to launch commercial services,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal, Bharti Group chairman and vice-president (co-Chair) of the board of directors of Eutelsat Group.

This news adds to Eutelsat OneWeb’s existing strong position in the Indian market, where OneWeb India already holds the necessary licences from the Department of Telecommunications to provide broadband services using satellite connectivity.

The business has also obtained in-principle approval to establish and operate two gateways in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, securing the provision of vital high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity to customers across India once services are rolled out.

Cyril Dujardin, co-general manager of connectivity at Eutelsat Group, said: “Bridging the connectivity gap around the world requires collaboration across business but also with governments and regulators. We are pleased to have received these approvals from the space regulator that bring the country a significant step closer to providing high-speed connectivity to even the most remote locations. Having completed our LEO constellation last year, we are perfectly placed to deliver this vital connectivity service to businesses across India.”

Volkswagen Taigun, Virtus Sound Edition launched today, all details here

Volkswagen Taigun, Virtus Sound Edition launched today, all details here

Soon after introducing the GT Edge Trail Edition of the Volkswagen Taigun, Volkswagen India has launched the next special edition of the Virtus and Taigun SUV, on November 21.

Called the ‘Sound Edition’, these special editions were announced to be launched by the German automaker through a teaser last week. While specific insights about the updates stay undisclosed, it is expected that both the special editions of Virtus and Taigun will exhibit cosmetic improvements and integrate new highlights to separate them from the regular models.

Volkswagen: What’s coming?

In view of the name, we anticipate that Volkswagen should present a few sound or music system- specific changes with the special editions of its compact SUV and sedan contributions. Until further notice just the GT Plus and GT Edge variants of the Taigun and Virtus get a subwoofer and an amplifier, which we think could be given to the higher-spec variations under the Powerful Line.

Since it’s a special edition, you can likewise expect a couple of cosmetic changes, for example, a few unique decals like we saw on the Taigun’s GT Edge Trail Edition. It’s likewise important that this unique version is not the same as the set of models that Volkswagen had disclosed in the first part of the year.

Likewise, while different carmakers have significantly centred on presenting special editions revolving around cosmetic changes, Volkswagen has all the earmarks of being the only one drawing out a sound-specific edition.

Latest special edition has no change in engines

The latest special edition won’t wear any mechanical changes. The Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus are presented with two turbo-petrol engine options: a 1-litre 3-cylinder unit (115 PS/178 Nm) and the other a 1.5-litre engine (150 PS/250 Nm).

A 6-speed manual is accessible as standard with both the engines. While the previous can be had with an optional 6-speed AT, the last option gets a 7-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission) automatic choice.

Competitors and Price Range

There are just four competitors to the Volkswagen Virtus: Hyundai Verna, the Honda City, Skoda Slavia, and Maruti Ciaz. Then again, the Volkswagen Taigun takes on the Kia Seltos, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Honda Elevate, MG Astor, Maruti Grand Vitara, Hyundai Creta, Skoda Kushaq, and Citroen C3 Aircross.

The sedan is priced from Rs 11.48 lakh to Rs 19.29 lakh, the Volkswagen SUV is estimated between Rs 11.62 lakh and Rs 19.76 lakh (ex-showroom in Delhi).

MediaTek has announced its Dimensity 8300 chipset with built-in generative AI capabilities similar to its flagship grade Dimensity 9300.

Built on a 4nm architecture, Mediatek Dimensity gets an Octa-core CPU with four Arm Cortex-A715 cores for performance and Four Cortex-A510 cores for efficiency. MediaTek claims over 20 perc ent faster CPU performance and 30 per cent peak gains in power efficiency over its predecessor.

Dimensity 8300’s GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) has also been upgraded, with the Mali-G615 GPU offering a claimed 60 per cent performance boost and a significant 55 per cent improved efficiency. MediaTek has also added support for LPDDR5X RAM up to 8533 Mbps.

For on-device gen-AI capabilities, the new chipset offers a dedicated APU 780 AI processor capable of running LLMs (Large Language Models) up to 10 billion parameters. Parameters are the variables present in a gen-AI model on which it was trained.

For imaging, the Dimensity 8300 brings support for 4K resolution video recording at 60 fps and AI-Colour Content ISP for AI-based colour adjustments in a scene.

Other notable features include Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E support for connectivity and support for refresh rates of up to 120Hz at WQHD+ and 180Hz at Full HD+ resolutions.

MediTek has not yet confirmed the devices that are in line to feature the new chipset but has announced that the first smartphone powered with the Dimensity 8300 will be launched before the end of the year.

Recently, Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip lineup with similar built-in generative- AI capabilities for mid-range smartphones.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 with 4nm architecture gets a single prime core, three performance cores and four efficiency cores. For AI capabilities, Qualcomm says the new processor’s Hexagon NPU (Neural Processing Unit) provides 60 per cent more performance per watt compared to the previous generation chipset.

Qualcomm has also said that the new chipset offers up to 2.63GHz peak CPU speeds and over 50 per cent faster GPU performance.

Size bump might lead to tetraprism Telephoto lens on iPhone 16 Pro: Report

Size bump might lead to tetraprism Telephoto lens on iPhone 16 Pro: Report

Representative Image: iPhone 15 Pro

Apple might bring its tetraprism Telephoto lens to iPhone 16 Pro for improved zoom capabilities, according to Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo.

Apple introduced a tetraprism lens system with the iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2023, allowing 5x optical zoom on the device’s camera. However, the new camera system was not added to the iPhone 15 Pro, making it the first time Apple differentiated in adding new camera technology among the two Pro models. The limitation was rumoured to be because of space constraints in smaller Pro models.

Recently, it was reported that the iPhone 16 Pro lineup is expected to get a size bump, with the Pro model featuring a 6.3-inch panel and Pro Max getting a 6.9-inch display. With an increase in the size of iPhone 16 Pro from 6.1-inch in the previous generation to 6.3-inch next year, Apple can look to fill up the additional space with more camera hardware.

Last week, it was reported that Apple is working on a new thermal design for the iPhone 16 series. According to a report by MacRumors, the next-generation iPhone models would likely feature a graphene thermal system along with a metal battery casing to reduce overheating.

The move appears to address the overheating issues experienced by some early iPhone 15 Pro owners who complained that their iPhone could get abnormally hot to touch. Back in October, Apple rolled out an iOS software update to address the thermal issue.

There have also been reports stating that the iPhone 16 could feature an additional button, purportedly solid-state-backed by its haptic engine. Its functionality remains unclear at the moment, but the button is expected to be located below the power button and will likely be a capacitive button rather than mechanical.

Apple is reportedly moving the mmWave antenna responsible for operating 5G frequency waves at short distances to the left side of the smartphone to free up space for an additional button on the right side.
