IIT Madras develops app for efficient, easy inter-city goods transportation

IIT Madras develops app for efficient, easy inter-city goods transportation

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, have developed a mobile application for easier and efficient transportation of goods within cities, and eliminating the role of middlemen.

Called ‘OptRoute’, the app connects a consumer with a driver sans any commission or on-boarding fee. The payment from the consumer goes directly to the driver, with no intermediaries.

The first version of the App has been developed and commercialised through OptRoute Logistics, an IIT Madras-incubated start-up co-founded by N.S. Narayanaswamy, Professor at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras and Anuj Fulia, an IIT Madras alumnus.

The basic ideas behind the app were presented during the 2020 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference held in Cancun, Mexico.

“OptRoute aims to solve the issues in connectivity between drivers and customers in the goods logistics and transport domain. The main issues faced are unavailability of return load for transporters and vehicle capacity under-utilization. Current market of this domain is highly unorganized making it inefficient.

“It is also ripe for deployment of technology based solutions to reach the goals set by the National Logistics Policy, 2022,” Narayanswamy said.

The start-up has also developed packing and efficient vehicle space utilisation methods, which will be included in the application once sufficient initial traction is achieved.

“We have developed a lightweight mobile application where customers and drivers can get connected. OptRoute does not use any third-party services allowing us to cut down the cost of operation to an absolute minimum and because of the same reason we are able to provide our service with zero percent commission.

“This design and development has had a significant contribution done by alumni and students of IIT Madras. By the end of this year, we will scale our service to be available in over 500 cities,” Fulia said.

The OptRoute application has two user modes – Driver and Customer. In the customer mode, users can place any goods transport request for which a vehicle is needed. In the Driver mode, users can view the available requests and accept them.

The service is currently available in multiple cities across India, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Panchkula, Pune, Mohali, Surat and Zirakpur.

90% organisations say generative AI will help add new lines of biz: PwC

90% organisations say generative AI will help add new lines of biz: PwC

As many as 90 per cent of the organisations surveyed said generative AI will help them add new lines of business over the next 12 months, according to PwC’s 2024 Digital Trust Insights.

Newer regulations around cybersecurity and data privacy like the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 have added to the strategic importance of enhanced cyber investments for organisations, it said.

“More than half the business decision-makers are most concerned about cloud security-related threats and almost half of them are concerned that the outcome of a cyber attack could result in loss of customer data and revenue,” said PwC India’s 2024 Digital Trust Insights.

The report sheds light on the evolving landscape of cybersecurity, and is based on a comprehensive survey of 3,876 business, technology, and security executives across the globe with 136 participants from India.

As per the report, 90 per cent of organisations believe gen AI will help them add new lines of business over the next 12 months, which reveals a significant trend — the widespread adoption of generative AI (gen AI) for cyber defence.

With the impact and risks around generative AI on the minds of most of the business leaders, 91 per cent of organisations opine employees’ personal use of generative AI will lead to tangible increases in their productivity within the next 12 months.

On the other hand, 73 per cent are of the view that it will lead to catastrophic cyber attacks in the next 12 months, the report said.

“Our survey highlights that nearly 70 per cent of organisations are actively planning to leverage Gen AI in their cybersecurity strategies, underlining the critical need for proactive and effective defence measures,” said Sivarama Krishnan, Partner & Leader, Risk Consulting, PwC India & Leader of APAC Cyber Security & Privacy.

The report also revealed that in 2024 cyber investments are expected to increase to 14 per cent, up from 11 per cent in 2023, highlighting the growing importance of cybersecurity in organisations’ overall strategies.

“For organisations in India, state-level and sectoral regulations continue to steer systemic changes in cybersecurity and the adoption of principle-based ones seems to be more successful. But irrespective of compliance requirements, businesses are investing in building an all-encompassing cyber resilience programme,” said Sundareshwar Krishnamurthy, Partner and Leader Cybersecurity, PwC India.

PwC’s report also highlights the importance of embracing innovation, automation, and managed services in cybersecurity. These technologies not only provide round-the-clock monitoring but also free up cybersecurity teams to focus on creative thinking and proactive threat mitigation.

While cybersecurity tops the risk register, it calls for a more significant presence of cybersecurity discussions in the boardroom, emphasising that security underpins every aspect of an organisation, including finance, development, technology, and personnel.

Apple to launch a bigger iPad Air with Pro backplane in early 2024: Report

Apple to launch a bigger iPad Air with Pro backplane in early 2024: Report

Representative Image: iPad Air 2022

The upcoming iPad Air lineup will likely feature a larger 12.9-inch display panel, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He said the rumoured 2024 iPad Air models will sport an LCD screen lacking the mini-LED technology of current-gen iPad Pro models.

In his latest report, Kuo said that Apple will update all existing models next year, starting with a refreshed 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Air in the first quarter of 2024. He also reported that the LCD screen on the upcoming iPad Air models will feature the same Oxide backplane as the current generation iPad Pro model. This will likely improve the display performance compared to the current 10.9-inch iPad Air.

The report also stated that the iPad Air will be followed by the OLED iPad Pro line with options for 11-inch and 13-inch screen sizes in the second quarter. The upcoming iPad Pro models are expected to feature a redesigned chassis and the latest M3 series chipset.

A new iPad mini and an 11th-generation iPad will be launched in late 2024. Apple will likely discontinue the ninth-generation iPad with a new version of the most affordable iPad launching.

Last week, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg also reported that Apple will update the entire iPad lineup in 2024. Additionally, he expects new AirPods to launch next year, while an updated Pro model may take a bit longer, with its launch expected in 2025.

With no new iPad models expected for 2023, this year will likely be the first year without any new iPad launch since Apple first unveiled the device back in 2010.

The feature is in its testing phase and is expected to roll out in coming months, according to some news reports.

Last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his broadcast channel on Instagram that the platform is testing a new privacy feature that would allow users to turn off read receipts for messaging. This feature would allow the receiver to hide the read status for a message from the sender.

Commenting on this, Mosseri said that the platform is currently testing the heavily requested feature that would let users “choose when to let others see when they have read their messages.” Mosseri, on his broadcast channel, shared screenshots of the upcoming feature, which hints at the option to disable read receipts that would be available under the “Privacy and Safety” settings.

Apple halts iOS 18 development while working on gen-AI for iPhones: Report

Apple halts iOS 18 development while working on gen-AI for iPhones: Report

Apple is planning to compete with the likes of Google and OpenAI by bringing generative-AI-based features to iPhone and other devices

Apple has reportedly halted development work for upcoming software updates, including iOS18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 and watchOS 11. According to Apple analyst Mark Gurman, head of software engineering Craig Federighi has decided to freeze the development work on the company’s next major software updates last month due to quality-related issues.
Gurman says that the American tech giant is planning to compete with the likes of Google and OpenAI by bringing generative-AI-based features to iPhone and other devices. He adds that the iPhone 16 will not have any major advances in terms of hardware, thus requiring the next major iOS version to be more effective.

The report also said that Internally, Apple’s senior management considers the upcoming operating system as ‘ ambitious and compelling’ with new features and design changes.

The reported delay has given Apple an extra week to fix bugs and glitches within the development cycle and is not expected to postpone the ultimate release of the software. However, it might give Apple less time at the end of the development cycle to eliminate last-minute glitches.

Apple generally announces new software and releases beta versions for testing at Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and the iOS 18 version is expected to follow the same pattern before rolling out next year.

Recently, it was also reported that Apple has started testing spatial video on the iPhone 15 Pro models with the iOS 17.2 beta update. According to some news reports, the new beta update for iOS 17.2 adds a new feature for recording spatial videos on the iPhone 15 Pro models that can be viewed in the Photos app. The spatial recording can be enabled from the Camera section in Settings by toggling on the ‘Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro’ option under camera formats.
