According to a report on Android Authority, the alternate profile is an opt-in feature in beta

Meta’s instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new privacy feature called alternate profile. Currently in beta, the alternate profile feature lets users restrict access to user profile photo and name to contacts only while displaying an alternate profile photo and name to other users. Essentially, it lets the users on the platform keep a separate profile name and picture for saved contacts and others.


According to a report on Android Authority, the alternate profile is an opt-in feature in beta. It allows users to select an alternate photo and name if they opt to restrict access to their primary profile photo to saved contacts only. This feature is said to improve user privacy on the messaging app, especially for those who contact people outside their saved contacts every day.


The report also stated that WhatsApp has started rolling out a new video call feature for iOS that lets users initiate group calls with up to 31 participants. Previously, Meta owned apps supported group calls for up to 32 participants but only allowed the call to be initiated with a maximum of 15 participants. This update allows group-calls to have 32 participants from the beginning. This feature is currently rolling out only for iOS users with no confirmation of release date on Android.

Apple to assemble iPhone 17 in India in a pivot away from China: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to start assembling the iPhone 17 in India before China, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a post on Medium, he said that the new product introduction (NPI) for the standard iPhone 17 is expected to start in India in 2024, making it the first time Apple would begin the development of a new iPhone model outside of China. Kuo stated that the standard iPhone model has been chosen because of its lower-difficulty design development, which reduces the risk.


According to Kuo, Apple is looking to strengthen its relationship with the Indian government as it would benefit future iPhone sales in the country and is critical to Apple’s growth over the next decade.


Kuo noted that the proportion of made in India iPhones would likely increase to an estimated 25 per cent of global production by 2024, which is about 14 per cent currently. Foxconn, which owns the maximum iPhone production capacity in India, is also expected to scale down production by the end of next year in Chinese plants at Zengzhou and Taiyuan by 45 per cent and 85 per cent, respectively.


Earlier this year, Apple started the production of iPhone 15 and 15 Plus in India. It allowed the American technology giant to sell an assembled-in-India iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus from day of launch. Apple has also been manufacturing iPhone 13, 14 and 14 Plus models in India as the older models drive the majority of its sales in the country.

YouTube started the crackdown on ad-blockers initially in June this year as an experiment

Google’s video streaming platform YouTube has started cracking down on ad-blockers in its global efforts to encourage users to try premium subscriptions or allow ads. According to media reports, the streaming platform has started displaying a warning message that “ad-blockers violates YouTube’s terms of service”. In a screenshot of the warning message posted by The Verge, the streaming platform noted “ads allow YouTube to be used by billions worldwide”.


YouTube started the crackdown on ad-blockers initially in June this year as an experiment. It showed a pop-up message asking users to disable the ad-blocker to watch videos on the platform. Citing YouTube communication manager Christopher Lawton, The Verge reported that the crackdown on ad-blockers is part of its global effort to encourage users to allow ads or try YouTube Premium.


According to a report on Android Authority, users have been posting complaining about seeing warnings in different formats for using ad-blockers on Reddit. It stated that YouTube gives a warning in some cases while restricting access to the platform.


The Google-owned video streaming platform has not specified about the kind of limitations it is imposing over those using ad-blockers yet.


YouTube had earlier introduced unskippable 30-second ads on its TV app to push users into subscribing to an ad-free premium plan.

LinkedIn hits one billion users, rolls out AI features for premium members

Professional networking platform LinkedIn on Wednesday announced new artificial intelligence-enabled features for its premium users to mark the milestone of one billion users.


“Today, we’re starting this journey with the launch of a new Premium experience, available to a select group of Premium subscribers. These members will experience greater personalisation with every interaction, from gaining insights into important topics to personalised career actions they can take,” said Tomer Cohen, chief product officer at LinkedIn, in a blog post.


The platform will now utilise artificial intelligence to scrutinise posts in users’ feeds, including comments, articles, and conversations, to identify the most significant opportunities for them.


Additionally, it will employ Microsoft Bing to offer summarised information on any topic that users search for.


“If you have a query about a trending topic, you can expect a prompt response in the form of expert articles and discussions, both from LinkedIn and across the web,” read Cohen’s blog post on the announcement.


The platform will also offer real-time job eligibility suggestions to users as part of its premium membership offering.


The Microsoft-owned company plans to introduce the artificial intelligence-enabled features for its premium users at no extra charge.


Earlier this year, the social networking site launched artificial intelligence-powered profile-writing solutions and messaging suggestions for its premium members. It also introduced a custom button serving as a personalised call to action on user profiles.
