Chip supplies reallocating from computers, mobiles to automobiles: CRISIL

Improving supply and slowing demand for computers and mobile phones has led to the reallocation of semiconductor chip supplies to other segments, particularly automobiles, ratings agency CRISIL said on Thursday. It added that chip shortage is easing but the demand-supply dynamics are expected to be more balanced by 2025-26.

According to the agency, global automobile demand, severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, made a strong recovery in the latter part of 2021-22, catching automobile manufacturers off guard as they had not placed substantial orders for chips.

By then, production lines had been prioritised for the computer and communication equipment (C&C) segment, where demand had surged for personal computers, laptops, and mobile phones, driven by work-from-home, virtual learning, and remote healthcare services.

Currently, the C&C segment consumes around 63 per cent of all chips produced, followed by automobiles at 13 per cent and the consumer and industrial segment at 12 per cent.

“The chip shortage faced by Indian passenger vehicle makers is easing, with current availability at 85-90 per cent of the total requirement. The production loss on account of the chip shortage, which had halved to 300,000 passenger vehicles (PVs) year-on-year in 2022-23, is estimated to have further declined to under 200,000 PVs by the end of September 2023,” said Anuj Sethi, senior director at Crisil Ratings.

PVs consume nearly 1,500 chips on average, the highest among all automobile types. The requirement increases as more advanced electronic features are incorporated. Electric PVs use almost twice as many chips as internal combustion engine (ICE) PVs.

In India, according to CRISIL, demand for chips will continue to increase over the medium term, driven by the gradual rise in EV adoption and growing demand for advanced feature-laden ICE vehicles.

“India currently meets its chip demand through imports. The government has allocated $10 billion for the development of the semiconductor ecosystem in a bid to cater to rising demand and reduce import dependence. This includes offering incentives of up to 50 per cent of the project cost to support the establishment of foundries,” said Naren Kartic K, associate director, CRISIL Ratings.

The Centre has been in talks with several chip makers to set up their plants in India. Earlier this month, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the ministry will start setting up the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre in 2024.

Chandrasekhar said that an essential part of this is to create, within India, the capabilities of being a leader in semiconductor research for the coming 10 years.

“That said, given India’s nascence in the field, successful joint ventures with established global players and commissioning of facilities will be crucial,” Naren added.

CRISIL also said that any delay in commissioning and stabilising operations at new facilities or geopolitical conflicts in countries with large semiconductor fabs, could present medium-term supply-chain risks and will bear watching.

iOS 17.1 update: New features, compatible iPhones, how-to install, and more

Apple has started rolling out iOS 17.1 update for supported iPhones. The software update brings new features in the Apple Music app, AirDrop, and StandBy mode, and more. Below are the details:

AirDrop over internet

The update brings a new ‘Out of Range’ option under the AirDrop section in settings which can be selected if the user wishes to transfer files over cellular data. It essentially means AirDrop transfers can now be completed over cellular data or Wi-Fi connection, if users walk out of AirDrop range after initiating the transfer.

Apple Music

iOS 17.1 brings a new lock screen widget for Apple Music, which allows users to add songs, albums, artists and playlists to favourites directly from the “Now Playing” widget on the lock screen. The recommended music also gets an improvement after taking favourite tracks into account.

Apple Music playlists get more customisation options, including colour-matched artwork with gradient effect.

StandBy

A new ‘Display’ section has been added to the StandBy menu in settings that offers more customisation options for the users, including auto screen turn off timer. The Night Mode option has also been relocated in the StandBy section with iOS 17.1 update.

Action Button

Apple has improved the Action Button function, which is available on the iPhone 15 Pro models. With iOS 17.1, the action button would not work for Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Focus and magnifier functions, if the phone is in pocket. This is added to help users avoid accidental triggers. Actions such as Mute function can still be activated while the iPhone is inside a pocket by long pressing the Action Button.

Other features

Other features in iOS 17.1 update includes flashlight indicator for the Dynamic Island, support for Nintendo Switch N64 Controller, renamed ‘Reading Now’ section in the Books App to ‘Read Now’.

Apple ‘Scary Fast’ event: M3-based Macs may get graphics boost for games

Apple may bring high-end gaming experience with the upcoming Mac models, which are expected at the Scary Fast event on October 30. According to media reports, gaming on the Mac will be one of the major focuses of the event.

Like the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro models, the upcoming M3 chipset would likely get hardware-driven ray-tracing – instead of software-based graphic acceleration – which would significantly improve graphics with regard to gaming. The M3 series chips are expected to be based on the 3nm architecture, which would improve performance and power efficiency.

At the iPhone 15 series launch event in September, Apple announced that AAA titles such as the Resident Evil 4 remake, Death Stranding Director’s Cut and Assassin’s Creed Mirage would be available on the iPhone 15 pro models with the new A17 Pro chip. The M3 series chips, which are expected to feature a similar architecture might also be able to support these games.

The recently rolled out macOS Sonoma also features a new Game Mode, which prioritises CPU and GPU performance for gaming. This mode also lowers AirPods audio latency. These new features hint towards better gaming experience on the upcoming Macs.

According to a report on MacRumors, there is a possibility that Sony, which would launch cloud streaming for PS5 games in North America on October 30, would tie-up with Apple to bring cloud-based gaming to Mac devices.

Apple raises prices of media streaming service TV+ to $9.99 per Month

By Mark Gurman

Apple Inc. raised prices of its TV+, Arcade gaming and News+ subscriptions on Wednesday, following similar moves by other content providers, as the iPhone maker looks to generate more revenue from services.

The company increased the cost of its TV+ streaming service to $9.99 from $6.99 a month. Arcade climbed to $6.99 from $4.99, and News went to $12.99 from $9.99. The changes apply to the US and some international markets.

The TV+ price increase is only the second in its four-year history. It was originally offered at $4.99 when it launched in 2019. The annual price of TV+ is moving to $99 from $69. Currently some people get TV+ for free through deals with mobile phone carriers, such as T-Mobile USA Inc.

“Since launching four years ago, Apple TV+ has made history for streaming services by crossing major milestones in a short span of time, thanks to its extensive selection of award-winning and broadly acclaimed series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple, which gets about 20% of revenue from its services division, is aiming to become a go-to hub for streaming content. The company is redesigning its TV app to consolidate its various video offerings later this year, Bloomberg has reported.

The app aggregates content from iTunes, the TV+ service, live sports networks and third-party offerings like Amazon Prime. Apple is aiming to steer more customers toward the TV app, which sits at the center of its expanding video strategy.

The changes follow moves by Netflix Inc. and others to raise prices for their subscription services. Companies such as Netflix, Amazon.com Inc. and Disney have also introduced tiered ad-supported offerings.

Apple remains the sole major streaming platform not to have the interruptions. It’s also still the least-expensive among the major providers.

Over the past several months, Apple TV+ has expanded its content selection, which includes big-budget movies like the just-released Killers of the Flower Moon from director Martin Scorsese. The company has also widened the selection of games in Apple Arcade, which offers subscribers access to more than 200 titles that can be played on the iPhone or iPad, in addition to Mac computers and Apple TV. News+ offers a library of more than 450 publications as well as narrated audio articles.

As a result of the individual plan increases, the Apple One services bundle is also going up. The basic plan, which includes Music, TV+, Arcade and 50 gigabytes of iCloud storage is now $19.95, up from $16.95. The Family plan jumped up by $3 to $25.95 and a Premier plan that adds News+ and Fitness+ is now $37.95, up from $32.95.

The price of Apple Music is staying steady at $10.99 a month, after getting a $1 boost about a year ago.
