Samsung One UI 6: Know about Android 14-based interface for Galaxy devices

South Korean electronics maker Samsung is working on the Android 14 operating system-based One UI 6 update, which is expected to roll out to supported devices soon. The user interface is currently available in beta for opted-in users to test on select Galaxy devices. The Android 14-based Samsung One UI 6 update for Galaxy devices would bring several new features, including redesigned quick panel, customisable lock screen, and two-finger drag-and-drop function. Below are the details:

Quick panel

The redesigned quick panel will have dedicated buttons for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at the top of the screen, with visual settings options such as the Dark mode and Eye comfort shield moving to the bottom of the menu.

Apps notifications in the expanded quick panel will appear as separate cards, making it easier to distinguish between individual notifications. It will also come with an option to sort received notification by time, instead of priority. The media control panel has also been updated to display cover art across the card while playing music or videos.

The redesigned quick panel will also feature an instant access option. When enabled, swiping down from the top-right side of the screen will bring down the quick panel while swiping from the top-left corner will slide down notification cards.

Lock screen and Home screen

One UI 6 update will let users position the clock widget on the lock screen according to their preference and will provide additional Clock designs. Users will also be able to set-up different lock screens for different modes such as in Driving mode, Sleep mode and more.

As for the home screen redesign, the app icon labels will be limited to a single line for a simplified and cleaner appearance. Home screen will also get new gesture controls to relocate apps and widgets. Besides, users will be able to drag apps with one hand and navigate with another to change the position of the app icon.

While using gesture navigation, swiping up from the bottom of the display will make the taskbar appear on the One UI 6.

Multitasking

With One UI 6, pop-ups will remain open even after the user leaves the recent section without minimising the pop up screen.

Samsung DeX

One UI 6 will allow users to switch between DeX mode and tablet mode without changing the home screen layout. Besides, DeX will have all the app icons and widgets and can be used in both landscape and portrait orientation.

Camera and Gallery

Quick settings menu will appear at the top of the screen and will have the option to change the resolution of the image to be taken. The camera interface on the Samsung Galaxy devices with One UI 6 will have a level line when grid lines are activated.

Samsung has improved the document scanning process by enabling Auto scan feature, which will let users scan documents by clicking a picture even if the scene optimizer is turned off.

The Gallery app on One UI 6 will display details of the image when the user swipes up from the bottom of the screen. This screen will also have options to edit and apply effects on a picture.

Clipping an object from an image will now automatically turn it into a sticker and will also allow the user to use drawing tools over a created sticker.

The play button on the video player will also appear in the centre while users will also have the option to change the playback speeds between 0.25x and 2.0x with dedicated buttons instead of a slider.

Smart select

One UI 6 will allow users to resize and extract text from an Image with the new Smart select option. Smart select will also display a magnified view when selecting an area of the screen.

Settings

One UI 6 will feature a smart Airplane mode. The phone will remember to keep Wi-Fi or Bluetooth turned on whenever Airplane mode is enabled on the device if the user opts in. Battery settings will have its own settings menu with more options to track and manage battery usage.

After Samsung, Chinese brands working to introduce flip smartphones

After Samsung, Chinese brands working to introduce flip smartphones

Motorola and Chinese brands like Tecno and Oppo are introducing innovative designs to tap into the flip smartphone segment, according to a report by the Economic Times. While Samsung continues to dominate in terms of sales, Chinese brands are making strides with their own interpretations of flip phones, with OnePlus set to join the trend later this month with a high-end foldable smartphone.

Market tracker Counterpoint Research showed that Samsung’s flip phone shipments reached an estimated 50,000-60,000 units in the first two months of the launch of its latest model in July 2023. In comparison, Motorola and Tecno are shipped around 18,000-20,000 phones each every month. Motorola was the first to challenge Samsung by unveiling two new flip phone models, including one priced below Rs 50,000, making it an industry-first move and maybe a more budget-friendly option than Samsung’s fifth-generation foldable phones, which opened at just under Rs 1 lakh.

In October, Tecno and Oppo introduced their offerings, differentiating themselves in terms of price, design, and features. Tecno introduced a circular cover display with mid-range specifications, priced under Rs 50,000. Oppo, on the other hand, reimagined the segment with a vertical cover screen that functions as a regular smartphone display, along with improved cameras and battery life.

Chinese brands have reportedly analysed Samsung’s offerings, addressing perceived weaknesses such as restrictive cover displays, short battery life, and high prices. Durability remains a significant concern for buyers that brands may need to work on to overcome.

Damyant Singh Khanoria, CMO of Oppo India told ET that the form factor has become mainstream and that developers are now working closely with brands to ensure seamless app integration with these new designs Oppo, for instance, has spent the better part of a year fine-tuning the software for its second-ever flip phone launched in India, based on five years of research in the foldable form factor. Last year, Meta had also announced a new way to create hands-free on Instagram and Facebook with Samsung flip phones showing its keenness to work with phone developers on this latest smartphone design.

China’s Baidu unveils Ernie 4.0 AI model, claims that it rivals GPT-4

China’s Baidu unveils Ernie 4.0 AI model, claims that it rivals GPT-4

Chinese search engine and artificial intelligence firm Baidu on Tuesday unveiled a new version of its artificial intelligence model, Ernie 4.0, claiming that it rivals models such as GPT-4 in the US

Baidu’s CEO Robin Li demonstrated Ernie 4.0 at the company’s annual Baidu World conference in Beijing. He said the model has achieved comprehension, reasoning, memory and generation, which uses algorithms to produce and create new content.

Li said that Ernie 4.0 was able to understand complex questions and instructions and apply reasoning and logic to generate answers to questions.

It is not inferior in any aspect to GPT-4, Li said, stating that the latest model was significantly improved compared to its original Ernie Bot model.

In a live demonstration, Li prompted Ernie 4.0 to generate advertising materials including advertising posters and a marketing video. He also asked Ernie 4.0 to come up with a martial arts novel complete with characters with various personalities.

Baidu is a frontrunner among a slew of Chinese companies racing to come up with artificial intelligence models, after OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the world by storm last year. Beijing sees artificial intelligence as a key industry to rival the United States and aims to become a global leader by 2030.

Beijing-based Baidu started off as a search engine firm and over the past decade has invested heavily in artificial intelligence technology such as autonomous driving and more recently, generative AI to stay competitive.

The company’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell 1.7 per cent Tuesday following the announcement.

Baidu introduced its Ernie Bot in March. In August, it made the model available to the public.

Ernie 4.0 is not yet available to the general public but some people have been invited to try it.

Li said Baidu plans to incorporate artificial intelligence technology into its search engine, maps and cloud drive services, and its business intelligence offerings for enterprise customers. He did not give a timetable for that.

The technology can transform how certain products work. Baidu’s search engine might generate a customized answer to a query instead of just providing a list of results and links.

China has recently sought to regulate the generative AI industry, requiring companies to carry out security reviews and obtain approvals before publicly launching their products. Companies that provide such AI services must also comply with government requests for technology and data.

The US does not have such regulations.

Apple working on a cheaper Vision Pro powered by iPhone-grade chip: Report

Apple working on a cheaper Vision Pro powered by iPhone-grade chip: Report

Apple’s maiden mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, was unveiled at the WWDC conference back in June. It is set to launch early next year with a price of around $3,500

Apple is reportedly working on a more affordable version of the Apple Vision Pro headset, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. To lower down the cost, Apple would remove features such as external display and Mac level chipset in its affordable version of its Augmented Reality (AR) headset that is expected to follow the Vision Pro.

According to Gurman, Apple would replace the chipset on the headset from a Mac level processor to that of an iPhone. The more affordable headset might get a lower resolution display and a reduced number of camera sensors. Apple would likely remove the EyeSight feature and external display to bring down the cost of the device.

Apple’s maiden mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, was unveiled at the WWDC conference back in June. It is set to launch early next year with a price of around $3,500. The more affordable version is expected to follow soon with a price tag of $1,500.

The lower cost headset would likely feature a slightly smaller and lighter design to make it more comfortable to wear. In another news report, Apple is exploring the possibility of integrating prescribed lenses directly onto the device to make it more user friendly.

In related news, Meta is working with South Korea’s LG to bring Apple Vision Pro competitor, according to a news report on 9to5mac. Meta has a Quest line of virtual reality headsets, which it plans to expand together with LG to take on Apple in the mixed reality headgear market. The first product from the partnership is expected to arrive either late in 2024 or early 2025.
