Gender bias seen in AI-generated content on leadership, new research says

New research has revealed an inherent gender bias in the content – text, images, other media – generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

Analysing AI-generated content about what made a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ leader, men were consistently depicted as strong, courageous, and competent, while women were often portrayed as emotional and ineffective, researchers at the University of Tasmania, Australia, and Massey University, New Zealand, found.

Thus, AI-generated content can preserve and perpetuate harmful gender biases, they said in their study published in the journal Organizational Dynamics.

“Any mention of women leaders was completely omitted in the initial data generated about leadership, with the AI tool providing zero examples of women leaders until it was specifically asked to generate content about women in leadership.

“Concerningly, when it did provide examples of women leaders, they were proportionally far more likely than male leaders to be offered as examples of bad leaders, falsely suggesting that women are more likely than men to be bad leaders,” said Toby Newstead, the study’s corresponding author.

Generative AI learns the patterns in input data, using which the AI is trained, and then creates content bearing similar characteristics. The AI depends on machine learning concepts for content creation.

For training these generative AI technologies, vast amounts of data from the internet along with human intervention to reduce harmful or biases are processed.

Therefore, AI-generated content needs to be monitored to ensure it does not propagate harmful biases, said study author Bronwyn Eager, adding that the findings highlighted the need for further oversight and investigation into AI tools as they become part of daily life.

“Biases in AI models have far-reaching implications beyond just shaping the future of leadership. With the rapid adoption of AI across all sectors, we must ensure that potentially harmful biases relating to gender, race, ethnicity, age, disability, and sexuality aren’t preserved,” she said.

“We hope that our research will contribute to a broader conversation about the responsible use of AI in the workplace,” said Eager.

Apple iPhone SE 4 in the works, to feature USB-C and Action button: Report

Apple iPhone SE 4 in the works, to feature USB-C and Action button: Report

Representative Image: iPhone SE 2022

Apple is reportedly working on the fourth-generation iPhone SE model, which is expected to be based on the iPhone 14 design with some features trickled down from the new iPhone 15 series. The rumoured smartphone is expected to be an affordable option for those looking to switch to Apple iPhones.

According to a news report on the MacRumors, the iPhone SE 4 would have a design largely based on the iPhone 14. It would borrow some features from the newly launched iPhone 15 lineup such as USB Type-C connector and Action button.

The Action button recently made its debut on the iPhone 15 Pro models. It is a customisable multi-purpose button, which replaced the old mute switch toggle on the high-end iPhone 15 Pro models. The Action button can be customised to perform various tasks depending on the user’s preference.

The iPhone SE 4 is expected to get a single camera on the rear, featuring a 48MP sensor. The rear flash might be aligned in an arrangement similar to the last generation of iPhone SE.

The smartphone would likely sport an OLED display, unlike the previous SE models that featured LCD panels. The home button on the front might also be scrapped for a larger screen. Therefore, it is likely that Apple would remove the TouchID and use FaceID.

The MacRumors report disapproves previous claims that Apple is developing the iPhone SE 4 exclusively for modem testing and that it was not intended for mass production. The report, however, states that the device is in the early development process and may not launch soon.

Apple iPhone 15 series users flag heating, slowdown, other issues: Details

Apple iPhone 15 series users flag heating, slowdown, other issues: Details

Apple iPhone 15 users face thermal issues while charging the smartphone

The iPhone 15 series users are reportedly facing several issues while using the flagship devices from Apple. While some iPhone 15 series users flag lag in interface, others report overheating while charging. Some of these are fixable through software updates and the American Tech giant has signalled that they are working to resolve these problems. Below is a roundup of issues the iPhone 15 series users flagged on various platforms, including X (formerly Twitter):

Overheating

The most common problem reported by the iPhone 15 series users is that the smartphone gets way too hot. Some users reported that the heating gets intensive while extensive gaming or recording videos in 4K. Others faced similar thermal issues while charging the smartphone.

While this problem is largely fixable with new software updates, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on Medium said that overheating in the new iPhones is largely due to changes made in the chassis to make the device lighter.

Durability

JerryRigEverything, a YouTube account that posts videos related to smartphone durability, recently posted a video in which it has shown that the back glass of the iPhone 15 Pro Max gets shattered easily. This issue is not software related so experts advise on using the phone with a case.

Interface

Some users have also reported that they are facing problems with booting up the device and transferring data from their previous iPhones. Apple did release an update on the launch day itself to rectify this issue.

Frame

The new titanium frame on the iPhone 15 Pro models is attracting dirt and fingerprints, reported some users. There are reports alleging frame alignment issues and scratches on their brand new device.

Move to iOS: iPhone 15 is good, but I am spoilt for choice as Android users

Move to iOS: iPhone 15 is good, but I am spoilt for choice as Android users

I had been an Android smartphone user until recently when I had to switch to the iPhone 15. Unlike my previous upgrades, where I moved from one brand to another but remained in the Android ecosystem, this time the switch has been to a new platform altogether. Switching to the iPhone from Android is easy, but the convenience ends right there because what comes after is surprising in both good and bad ways. Here is my experience:

iPhone 15: First Impressions

The immediate standout feature of the iPhone 15 is its look and feel. It is notably lighter than my previous device, the Samsung Galaxy A22, and the combination of a matte finish on the back glass and sleek aluminium frame exudes a premium vibe. The edge-to-edge glass display with thin bezels further adds to its charm. However, it has an unconventional pill-shaped cut-out on the display, which Apple calls Dynamic Island. It is a distraction, but you get used to it over time.

Switching to iOS was a significant change, affecting everything from how apps are displayed on the home screen to the layout of the quick settings menu. This shift added an element of excitement, reminding me of the pre-smartphone days when every new phone came with a unique interface.

Setting up the iPhone did take longer than expected, primarily because I had to create an Apple ID.

Experience

iPhones are known for many things, but it is the imaging experience that caught my fancy soon after the switch. It captures images with remarkable detail and texture even in challenging low-light conditions. Video recording is equally impressive, particularly with the cinematic mode that adds depth to videos with impressive precision.

The camera system capabilities would have been wasted without a display to match, and the iPhone 15 does not disappoint. The 6.1-inch OLED display delivers a smooth experience despite being a panel of a 60Hz refresh rate.

The thought of being able to charge the iPhone 15 with my old Android phone charger was both exciting and amusing. Surprisingly, I noticed that the phone heated up beyond normal when charged with my Android phone’s cable, but not so much with the cable that comes with it in the box.

The standout feature for me has to be AirDrop, which makes transferring photos and videos from the iPhone to an iPad, Mac, and any other Apple ecosystem product quick and easy.

Above are some of the things that I found good about the iPhone 15. On the flip side, I faced trouble with the Phone app first since it showed call logs from third-party apps such as WhatsApp. Tapping on the missed calls received on these apps but shown on the Phone app initiates the call from the respective apps and not over the cellular network. This is both confusing and frustrating. Moreover, unlike an Android smartphone, you cannot quickly search for a contact by typing the name on the dialer window.

Navigating the interface is another hindrance to the experience. There is an icon in the top left corner to move back within the apps, but it requires some effort since it is not easily reachable unless you use both hands to operate the phone. iOS supports gesture navigation, including a swipe inward from the left side of the display to go back. However, it is inconsistent and does not work across apps. Lastly, finding basic settings is a task since settings related to one thing are scattered under different options. For example, Siri settings are available in both ‘Siri & Search’ and ‘Accessibility’ settings.

I like to keep my phone’s home screen organised with widgets, and iOS lets you place widgets on the home screen. The problem is that iOS lags behind Android in terms of third-party application widgets and customisation options for the same.

In summary, the iPhone 15 with iOS 17 is a new experience but not on par with Android, which has spoiled users for choice. I am still finding new ways every day to use the phone to the max of its potential, and you will know more about the iPhone 15 in detail in the review that is coming up shortly. So, stay tuned!
