X social media’s India, South Asia policy head Samiran Gupta resigns

By Aditya Kalra

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Social media platform X’s head of policy for India and South Asia, Samiran Gupta, has resigned, two sources said, a top departure that comes ahead of India elections and as the company fights a court battle with New Delhi over content removal.

Gupta was the most senior India employee for X, formerly known as Twitter, and responsible for “key content-related policy issues” and “defending Twitter’s position with new policy developments and support in-country sales organization,” according to his LinkedIn profile.

Gupta, who was designated as X’s Head of Global Government Affairs for India and South Asia, declined to comment to Reuters. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gupta’s tenure at X ended in September, according to Gupta’s LinkedIn profile, which said he “enabled transition leadership for Twitter post acquisition by Elon Musk led X-Corp.”

He had joined the company in February, 2022, eight months before Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter Inc.

X counts India as a key market, with around 27 million users. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other government officials are regular users of the platform.

There are roughly 15 X employees in functions like compliance and engineering in India, said one of the sources, but Gupta was the only executive engaging with the government and political parties.

Interaction between X and government and party officials would intensify typically during the run up to polls, and a national election is due to take place in India next year.

X is appealing against an Indian court ruling that it had failed to comply with government orders to remove certain content, arguing it could embolden New Delhi to block more content and broaden the scope for censorship.

India in September told a court X is a “habitual non-compliant platform” and for years has not followed many orders to remove content, undermining the government’s role.

Britain uses UN speech to show want to be a leader on how world handles AI

Britain uses UN speech to show want to be a leader on how world handles AI

Britain has pitched itself to the world as a ready leader in shaping an international response to the rise of artificial intelligence, with Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden telling the UN General Assembly his country was “determined to be in the vanguard”.

Touting the United Kingdom’s tech companies, its universities and even Industrial Revolution-era innovations, he said Friday that the nation has “the grounding to make AI a success and make it safe”. He went on to suggest that a British AI task force, which is working on methods for assessing AI systems’ vulnerability, could develop expertise to offer internationally.

His remarks at the assembly’s annual meeting of world leaders previewed an AI safety summit that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is convening in November. Dowden’s speech also came as other countries and multinational groups including the European Union, the bloc that Britain left in 2020 are making moves on artificial intelligence.

The EU this year passed pioneering regulations that set requirements and controls based on the level of risk that any given AI system poses, from low (such as spam filters) to unacceptable (for example, an interactive, children’s toy that talks up dangerous activities).

The UN, meanwhile, is pulling together an advisory board to make recommendations on structuring international rules for artificial intelligence. Members will be appointed this month, Secretary-General Antnio Guterres told the General Assembly on Tuesday; the group’s first take on a report is due by the end of the year.

Major US tech companies have acknowledged a need for AI regulations, though their ideas on the particulars vary. And in Europe, a roster of big companies ranging from French jetmaker Airbus to Dutch beer giant Heineken signed an open letter urging the EU to reconsider its rules, saying it would put European companies at a disadvantage.

“The starting gun has been fired on a globally competitive race in which individual companies as well as countries will strive to push the boundaries as far and fast as possible,” Dowden said. He argued that “the most important actions we will take will be international”.

Listing hoped-for benefits such as improving disease detection and productivity alongside artificial intelligence’s potential to wreak havoc with deepfakes, cyberattacks and more, Dowden urged leaders not to get “trapped in debates about whether AI is a tool for good or a tool for ill”.

“It will be a tool for both,” he said.

It’s “exciting. Daunting. Inexorable”, Dowden said, and the technology will test the international community “to show that it can work together on a question that will help to define the fate of humanity”.

Made-in-India Apple’s iPhone 15 likely to see blockbuster sales: Retailers

Made-in-India Apple’s iPhone 15 likely to see blockbuster sales: Retailers

Apple’s iPhone 15, launched in India and many other countries on Friday, is poised to be “a blockbuster”, key large authorised retailers of Apple Inc have forecast based on initial trends and bookings.

Sales of the iPhone 15 in India will likely be 40 to 50 per cent higher than those of the iPhone 14, which had received a subdued response last year, they said. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are being assembled in India at Foxconn’s Chennai plant and the made-in-India phones are being made available from day one of their launch – a first for the country.

Most retailers said the iPhone 15 could witness huge sales, especially given the ample inventory built up for the made-in-India phones. They, however, pointed out that stocks of the premium iPhone Pro and Max models, especially those with a titanium finish, which are imported and had been pre-booked, were now sold out. Fresh stocks are expected in a few weeks.

Apple is projected to account for 7 per cent of all smartphone sales in the country from July to December, up from 5 per cent in the first half of 2023, according to data from market researcher Counterpoint shared exclusively with Reuters.

The Cupertino-based company has channelled its focus towards its own network of over 3,000 retailers, two company-owned stores, and its own online store, which have received the bulk of the inventory. Sources familiar with Apple’s strategy said this approach contrasted with many competing mobile companies, which rely heavily on large inventories and discounts through major e-commerce platforms for the bulk of their sales.

Retailers noted that Apple had rendered the phones more affordable through its trade-in strategy. The most commonly exchanged phones are the iPhone 10 and 11, neither of which is 5G-enabled. The average exchange offer is around Rs 20,000, with additional exchange bonuses and instant cash offers.

A senior executive from a leading authorised retail chain for Apple commented, “When you combine all these offers, the iPhone 15, originally priced at Rs 79,900, comes down to Rs 48,900. Even the iPhone 15 Plus, priced at Rs 89,900, becomes available for Rs 58,400. This has been a significant attraction.”

Furthermore, there are appealing equated monthly instalment offers available from banks and finance companies, with no down payment required, featuring a monthly payout of Rs 3,329 for the iPhone 15.

Most retailers expect that, based on historical trends, the launch of the iPhone15 will boost the sales of the iPhone13 — the current entry-level and most affordable Apple phone. The iPhone 13 tends to attract first-time buyers of Apple products, who later trade up.

Based on historical global trends, analysts say every alternate iPhone model becomes a blockbuster. For instance, while the iPhone13 was a hit, the iPhone 14 had muted sales, both globally and in India. Now, the iPhone15 could set records, they suggest.

Sale of Apple’s iPhone 15 is estimated to have registered a 100 per cent growth compared to that of the iPhone 14 series on the first day with high demand for made-in-India iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, according to industry sources.

Apple has for the first time made available the ‘made-in-India’ iPhone on the same day it started selling the devices in the country and other parts of the globe.

“Till evening, 6 pm IST, the sales of iPhone 15 series have recorded over 100 per cent growth on Day 1 compared to the sale of iPhone 14. There are long queues everywhere and more people have started coming after their office hours,” an industry source, who did not wish to be identified, told PTI.

An email query sent to Apple did not elicit any reply.

Apple has started selling made-in-India iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, having colour options of pink, yellow, green, blue, and black with 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB storage capacities, at starting prices of Rs 79,900 and Rs 89,900, respectively.

The iPhone 15 series marks several firsts for Apple in India. This is the first time that customers are able to buy iPhones from Apple Stores in Delhi and Mumbai.

According to another industry source, the iPhone 15 Pro series was booked by more customers but demand for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus was also high at Apple stores, and Apple Premium Reseller stores.

To woo customers, Reliance Retail has bundled six months of free Jio services and unlimited data usage for iPhone 15 customers.

Quick commerce firm Blinkit announced a partnership with Apple Premium Reseller Unicorn to deliver iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus to customers within 10 minutes of placing orders in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru.

Isro moves to wake up Chandrayaan-3 rover, lander as dawn breaks on Moon

Isro moves to wake up Chandrayaan-3 rover, lander as dawn breaks on Moon

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is gearing up to wake up the lander and rover modules of Chandrayaan-3 mission from their “sleep mode” as dawn breaks on the Moon on Wednesday.

The Pragyan rover of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which is stationed on the lunar surface, was deliberately placed in “sleep mode” by the Isro on September 4. The solar-powered rover had successfully completed its assignments and was put on this temporary hiatus until September 22

At the time, Isro had stated, “Currently, the battery is fully charged. The solar panel is oriented to receive light at the next sunrise expected on September 22, 2023. The receiver is kept on.”

Now that dawn has broken, the rover will most likely be revived on either Thursday or Friday, contingent on the availability of sunshine on the south pole of the lunar surface.

On Thursday, Union Minister Jitendra Singh explained in the Lok Sabha, “Our communication circuit (with the lander and rover) has to get activated. The communication circuit is called the wake up circuit. It will work when the temperature rises to minus 10 degrees. Now, team Isro and everyone connected to the mission are waiting for the temperature to rise on the moon,”

According to a report by the Indian Express, Isro officials have stated that the chances of reviving the rovers is “not very high” but it is “not a hopeless situation” either. There is a possibility that the lander or the rover module may be able to wake up but without its full functionality.

The Chandrayaan-3 modules were not designed to combat extremely low temperatures. The south pole of the Moon is known to drop below -200 degrees Celsius. However, as Chandrayaan-3 had already completed its main scientific objective, Isro decided to take a chance by extending the lifespan of the lander and rover. For context, Chandrayaan-3 modules only had a mission life of one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 days on Earth.

“The moment of anxiety is that we are waiting for the wake up call to get activated and Vikram and Pragyan to respond to that alarm. Once they do, the communication from the earth will begin and we will be the first in the world to have accomplished this,” the Union minister added.
