DoJ pushes ahead with antitrust case against Google, questions ex-employee

The US Justice Department pressed ahead with its antitrust case against Google on Wednesday, questioning a former employee of the search engine giant about deals he helped negotiate with phone companies in the 2000s.

Chris Barton, who worked for Google from 2004 to 2011, testified that he made it a priority to negotiate for Google to be the default search engine on mobile devices. In exchange, phone service providers or manufacturers were offered a share of revenue generated when users clicked on ads.

In the biggest antitrust case in a quarter century, the government is arguing that Google has rigged the market in its favour by locking in its search engine as the one users see first on their devices, shutting out competition and smothering innovation.

Google counters that it dominates the internet search market because its product is better than the competition. Even when it holds the default spot on smartphones and other devices, it argues, users can switch to rival search engines with a couple of clicks.

And Barton testified that Google wasn’t the only search engine seeking default status with phone companies.

In a 2011 email exchange, Google executives noted that AT and T chose Yahoo and Verizon went with Microsoft’s Bing as its search engine.

I faced a challenge because mobile carriers became fixed on revenue share percentage,” Barton said on Wednesday.

To counter the competition, he tried to persuade potential partners that Google’s high-quality searches would generate more clicks and therefore more advertising revenue even if the carriers were paid a nominally lower percentage.

Google has emerged as the dominant player in internet searches, accounting for about 90 per cent of the market.

The Justice Department filed its antitrust lawsuit against the company nearly three years ago during the Trump administration, alleging Google has used its internet search dominance to gain an unfair advantage against competitors.

The trial, which began on Tuesday, is expected to last 10 weeks.

US District Judge Amit Mehta likely won’t issue a ruling until early next year. If he decides Google broke the law, another trial will decide what steps should be taken to rein in the Mountain View, California-based company.

Top executives at Google and its corporate parent Alphabet Inc., as well as those from other powerful technology companies are expected to testify. Among them is likely to be Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, who succeeded Google co-founder Larry Page four years ago. Court documents also suggest that Eddy Cue, a high ranking Apple executive, might be called to the stand.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department also questioned Google chief economist Hal Varian for a second day about the way the company uses the massive amounts of data generated by user clicks to improve future searches and entrench its advantage over rivals.

G20 Declaration may drive India’s ascent as global digital talent fub, AWS

G20 Declaration may drive India’s ascent as global digital talent fub, AWS

India is poised to cement its position as a global digital talent hub, thanks in part to the recent G20 declaration focusing on closing skill gaps in the digital sector. This development coincides with the growing trend of digital transformation among Indian firms and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), many of which are turning to cloud solutions like those offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

On the domestic front, Indian firms and SMBs are increasingly shifting towards digital transformation, reports Peerzada Abrar.

Cloud computing platforms like AWS are playing a crucial role in this evolution. AWS offers a range of services that can be tailored to the specific needs of businesses, thereby reducing costs, improving efficiency, and promoting innovation. In recent years, Indian companies have aggressively adopted cloud services, contributing to the country’s burgeoning digital economy. The proliferation of cloud computing is also encouraging companies to invest in skill development, preparing the workforce for a more digitised future.

Interestingly, AWS has recognised India as a key market and is capitalising on the growing demand for cloud services. With its robust infrastructure and an array of services, AWS aims to be the go-to solution for Indian firms looking to modernise their operations. This is a win-win situation for both AWS and Indian companies: the former gains a vast market, while the latter benefit from cutting-edge technology that can significantly optimise operations.

The combined impact of the G20 declaration and the rapid digital transformation within the country could make India an attractive destination for global tech companies seeking skilled labour. Moreover, the adoption of advanced cloud services will give Indian companies a competitive edge in the global market. It also sets the stage for India to not just be a consumer of global tech innovation but also a contributor.

In conclusion, the G20’s focus on skill development in the digital sector and the widespread adoption of cloud services by Indian firms signal a promising future for India’s tech industry. As more companies opt for digital transformation, it will spur demand for skilled workers, thereby closing the existing skill gap. All these factors position India to become a major player in the global digital landscape in the years to come.

Apple A17 Pro: Everything about 3nm-based chip powering iPhone 15 Pro line

Apple A17 Pro: Everything about 3nm-based chip powering iPhone 15 Pro line

Apple said the A17 Pro chip is manufactured using a 3nm fabrication process node that allowed it to put over 19 billion transistors on it

Apple has given the newly launched iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max model a significant performance upgrade with the new A17 Pro processor. The American tech giant unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro lineup at the ‘Wonderlust’ event on September 12, alongside the baseline iPhone 15 series. The new system-on-chip is exclusive to the models in the Pro series. Here are details of the Apple A17 Pro chip:

Fabrication

Apple said the A17 Pro chip is manufactured using a 3nm fabrication process node that allowed it to put over 19 billion transistors on it. It is a significant upgrade over the last generation A16 Bionic chip, which was made on 4nm architecture and had 16 billion transistors. With smaller nanometer chipsets considered to be better, the number of transistors and its size plays an important role in determining chip performance and its power efficiency.

Transistors are the building block of a chip as it regulates current and acts as switch gates to perform basic calculation and processing. The term Nanometer denotes the size of an individual transistor, so smaller the size, more tightly they can be packed together on a chip freeing up more space to add more transistors. More transistors on a small package improves processing performance and power efficiency.

CPU

Apple said the A17 Pro chip gets performance boost by up to 10 per cent compared to the predecessors. The new system-on-chip has a 6-core CPU, which includes two high performance cores and four efficiency cores.

The CPU is responsible for performing logical and input-output operations, by performing calculations and making logical comparisons. The performance cores on a CPU look after heavy tasks while the efficiency cores handle background tasks that do not require much processing.

GPU

For the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), Apple said it has completely redesigned to feature a 6-core GPU on the A17 Pro chip. Apple said the new GPU design will boost the performance by up to 20 per cent while being more power efficient. The GPU on the A17 Pro supports hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing, which is said to enhance the graphics while gaming on the iPhone 15 Pro series smartphones. Ray Tracing technique realistically simulates the lightning in a scene to produce life-like reflections and shadows.

GPU or Graphics Processing Unit acts as a specialised processor designed for graphics rendering and with its rapid processing speeds, it enhances video editing and gaming experience on a device.

USB 3 support

With the new iPhone 15 lineup sporting USB-C port, Apple has opted to add support for USB 3 in the A17 Pro silicon. Apple says that with USB 3 transfer speeds will be 20x faster than USB 2 with speeds up to 10GB/s.

Apple introduces Watch Ultra 2 powered by S9 chip: Know details here

Tech giant, Apple announced its newest flagship smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

On Tuesday, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook and his team launched the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

According to a report by US-based tech portal TechCrunch, the Ultra 2’s design looks quite similar to that of the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, which means the most significant upgrade is on the inside.

Like the new Series 9, the Ultra 2 will be powered by Apple’s S9 SiP, which has 5.6 billion transistors and a four-core neural engine as well as a U2 ultra wideband location chip.

This will enable new advanced features, including on-device Siri processing and more precise location tracking.

And we talk about the outer side of the watch, it has an upgraded display from the previous Ultra model, rated for 3,000 nits, which Apple says is the brightest display an Apple Watch has ever had.

Apple claimed that users will get 72 hours to charge when the device is in low-power mode. The case is now made from 95 per cent recycled titanium.

Some of the biggest changes that Apple Watch users will see this year, will be watchOS 10, which brings widgets, redesigned app icons, and new mapping and cycling features to the watch interface.

An additional watch face called ‘Modular Ultra’ will make use of the outer edge of the display. And a new double-tap gesture will enable users to more easily start and end phone calls.

The Ultra 2 will be available at USD 799 (approx. 67,000 INR). You can get your hands on this Watch from September 22.

Apple introduced the new watch at Apple Park in Cupertino as part of its ‘Wonderlust’ launch event.

iPhone 12 complies with radiation standards: Apple disputes French findings

iPhone 12 complies with radiation standards: Apple disputes French findings

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini Photo: Apple

Apple said on Wednesday its iPhone 12 model was certified by multiple international bodies as compliant with global radiation regulations and standards after a French watchdog ordered it to stop selling the phones due to above-threshold radiation levels.

The ANFR radiation watchdog told Apple on Tuesday it should stop selling iPhone 12 in France after carrying out tests which it said showed the smartphone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was higher than legally allowed.

The ANFR said it expected Apple “to deploy all available means to put an end to the non-compliance.

“Failure to act will result in the recall of equipment that has already been made available to consumers.” Apple said it had provided ANFR multiple Apple and independent third-party lab results proving its compliance.

It said it was contesting the results of the review made by AFNR and would continue to engage with the authority to show it is compliant.
