Ukraine has banned government officials, military personnel and other defence and critical infrastructure workers from installing the popular Telegram messaging app on state-issued devices, describing the move as necessary for national security during the war with Russia.

Ukraine’s National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre said it issued the ban for the official devices of government employees, military personnel, security and defence workers, and critical infrastructure employees. The ban was announced Friday by Ukraine’s Security and Defence Council in a statement on Facebook.

During a meeting on Thursday, the Security Service of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said Telegram is actively used by Russia for cyberattacks, phishing, spreading malware, establishing user locations and calibrating missile strikes.

An exception to the ban will be allowed for people who use the app in their official duties. Ukrainians are free to use the app in their personal devices.

The app is widely used in Ukraine not only for texting but also for reading news, including updates on Russian air attacks. It is also the primary way Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, engage with the public and relay war developments. Zelenskyy is likely to continue using Telegram in his public communications since it is in his official capacity.

Ukraine’s intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, said Russian intelligence services are able to access the personal messages of app users, including deleted messages, as well as their personal data, according to the statement.

I have always advocated and continue to advocate for freedom of speech, but the issue of Telegram is not a matter of freedom of speech; it is a matter of national security, Budanov said, according to the statement.

Solar Eclipse 2024 on 2nd October: Everything you need to know about the Sutak kaal

Solar Eclipse 2024 on 2nd October: Everything you need to know about the Sutak kaal

In Hinduism, the significance of solar eclipses play a major role. Astrology states that the day of Amavasya is always when a solar eclipse happens. Twelve hours prior to the solar eclipse, the Sutak period begins.

Just fifteen days after the lunar eclipse this year, on October 2, 2024, which falls on Sarva Pitru Amavasya (New Moon day of ancestors), will witness the second solar eclipse of this year.

An annular solar eclipse, which happens when the Moon moves in front of the Sun and the Earth, will be taking place. Solar eclipses or Sutak kaal are regarded as unlucky from a religious standpoint.

When is the second Solar Eclipse 2024?

Just 15 days after the lunar eclipse this year, on October 2, 2024, which falls on Sarva Pitru Amavasya (New Moon day of ancestors), will see the second solar eclipse of this year. An annular solar eclipse, which happens when the Moon moves in front of the Sun and Earth, will be taking place. Solar eclipses (or Sutak) are regarded as unlucky from a religious standpoint.

Will the Solar Eclipse 2024 be seen in India?

The second solar eclipse of 2024 will start on October 2, at 9:13 PM, and run until 3:17 AM, based on Indian Standard Time (IST). The eclipse will not be visible in India because it happens at night, and the Sutak period, the unlucky period that precedes the eclipse, will also not be observed there.

Where will the year’s last solar eclipse 2024 be visible?

Outside of India, areas like Argentina, the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic, South America, Peru, and Fiji will also be able to see the year’s last solar eclipse.

What is an Annular Solar Eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon only completely obscures the Sun’s disk in the centre, leaving a brilliant ring surrounding the edges of the Sun. The well-known “ring of fire” effect that characterises annular solar eclipses is produced by this bright outer rim.

WhatsApp advanced search by category to Channel, Know more

WhatsApp advanced search by category to Channel, Know more

Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced an update to its Channels feature. WhatsApp launched Channels last year to enable sharing of text, photos, videos, and stickers with multiple people simultaneously. Voice messages and polls were added in January.

The latest update includes advanced search by category for Channels. Users can now browse seven categories to discover channels to follow: People, Organizations, Lifestyle, Sports, Entertainment, Businesses, and News & Information. This update is being rolled out globally and will be available to all users in the coming days. Additionally, WhatsApp has increased the maximum number of administrators for a Channel to 16.

To use the feature, go to the “Updates” tab and select “Explore” to view all categories and relevant channels in the directory.

WhatsApp recently announced new features to personalise and enhance the sticker experience on its platform. The instant messaging app is introducing searchable GIPHY stickers, a Custom Sticker Maker, and additional options. WhatsApp users can now access stickers from GIPHY directly within the app or create their own.

Moreover, WhatsApp is working on features to improve visibility and access to fresh status updates. The update tracker WABetainfo discovered this feature in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.19.4 for Android, available on the Google Play Store. This feature enables users to open status updates directly from the viewer list.

WhatsApp is reportedly planning to introduce a new feature focused on enhancing user privacy. The upcoming update may include passkey authentication for account verification, logins, and chat backup encryption. Passkeys will use biometric data, such as facial recognition and fingerprints, as an alternative to traditional passwords.

WhatsApp to introduce New Feature chat bubble and background customisation with themes

WhatsApp to introduce New Feature chat bubble and background customisation with themes

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to customise their chat interface using themes. According to a report by WABetaInfo, Android users will soon be able to select the colour of chat bubbles and backgrounds from a predefined set of themes.

According to the report, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android includes 11 default chat themes, enabling users to personalise the appearance of individual conversations. These themes will automatically adjust to the device’s light or dark mode. In dark mode, users can also customise the brightness of the background and chat bubble colours for an optimal viewing experience.

Selecting a theme will automatically change the wallpaper and chat bubble colours to match the chosen style. According to the report, each theme comes with a set of chat bubble colours that compliments the background. However, users will have the option to modify the background wallpaper while keeping the same chat bubble colour for more control. It should also be noted that the selected theme will only appear on the account of the user who applies it, without affecting the other person in the conversation.

The new feature will be available under a dedicated section in the app’s settings for theme customisation. The chat theme feature is expected to roll out to WhatsApp for Android in an upcoming update, while there is no confirmation yet on whether it will be introduced for iOS.

Microsoft launches new unified app to connect to Windows across platforms: Technology news

Microsoft launches new unified app to connect to Windows across platforms: Technology news

Microsoft has launched a Windows app for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, web browsers, Android devices, and Windows PCs. The app serves as a central hub for streaming Windows from various sources, including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, and more.

“With Windows App, you can enjoy a unified experience that makes it simple for people to connect to the Windows experience they know and love from any device. Enhance productivity with features such as customisable home screens, multi-monitor support, and USB redirection. The Windows App also offers advanced security features, including multifactor authentication, to ensure a seamless and robust connection, enabling efficient work from any location at any time,” said Microsoft.

The new integrated app has been in testing for almost a year and includes a customisable home screen, multi-monitor support, and USB redirection, allowing users to utilise local devices like webcams, storage devices, and printers as if they were directly connected to a cloud PC.

The app is limited to Microsoft work and school accounts, as it is mainly intended for current users of Remote Desktop clients for Windows and other operating systems to transition to. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection app has served a similar purpose for years and continues to be included with Windows 11. Both apps enable users to access work PCs from a personal laptop or desktop.

It appears that Microsoft does not plan to support consumer accounts with the new Windows app. However, last year, it was revealed that Microsoft aims to fully transition Windows to the cloud in the long term to “enable improved AI-powered services and full roaming of people’s digital experience,” reports The Verge.

The new Windows app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store and is also available on Apple’s App Store for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. An Android version in public preview mode is also available.
