Intel’s Amazon chip deal lifts investor confidence in money-losing foundry unit Sept 17 (Reuters) – Intel shares jumped 7 per cent before the bell on Tuesday, as a chip-making deal with Amazon’s cloud business provided a major stamp of approval for its struggling contract manufacturing business.

The chipmaker will build custom AI chips for Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of the multibillion-dollar deal. The move expands a years-long tie-up between the companies under which Intel designs several chips used in Amazon’s datacenters.

“The deal provides Intel with some credibility as it looks to gain traction with new external customers. In addition, it will help Intel sell itself as a supplier of custom AI silicon chips” said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research.

Intel’s stock has plunged nearly 60 per cent this year and has lagged chip firms, including Nvidia and TSMC, as it missed out on an AI-driven boom in chip demand.

The company has been trying to regain the manufacturing edge it lost to TSMC by building out its foundry unit, which has been the centerpiece of CEO Pat Gelsinger’s turnaround strategy.

AWS is among the first major customers Intel has announced a definitive deal with. It had said in February Microsoft would use its services to manufacture a custom computing chip.

But “meaningful” revenue from the capital-intensive foundry unit is not expected until 2027, even as expensive investments sap cash flow and draw investor ire.

To ease the pressure, Intel said it would pause chip factory projects in Poland and Germany by about two years, raising doubts about the nearly 10 billion euros ($11.14 billion) in subsidies from Germany for its two plants in the country.

“The move … should help to boost cash flow, even if the focus on US-based fabs is unlikely to go down well in the EU. It will no doubt gain plaudits in Washington though and help Intel preserve important relationships,” Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said.

Instagram rolls out teen accounts with parental controls as scrutiny mounts

Instagram rolls out teen accounts with parental controls as scrutiny mounts

Meta Platforms is rolling out enhanced privacy and parental controls for Instagram accounts of users under 18 in a significant overhaul aimed at addressing growing concerns around the negative effects of social media.

Meta will port all designated Instagram accounts automatically to “Teen Accounts”, which will be private accounts by default, the company said on Tuesday.

Users of such accounts can only be messaged and tagged by accounts they follow or are already connected to, while sensitive content settings will be dialed to the most restrictive available.

Users under 16 can change the default settings only with a parent’s permission. Parents will also get a suite of settings to monitor who their children are engaging with and limit their use of the app.

Several studies have linked social media use to higher levels of depression, anxiety and learning disabilities, particularly in young users.

Meta, ByteDance’s TikTok and Google’s GOOGL.O YouTube already face hundreds of lawsuits filed on behalf of children and school districts about the addictive nature of social media.

Last year, 33 U.S. states including California and New York sued the company for misleading the public about the dangers of its platforms.

Top platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, allow users who are 13 years of age and above to sign up.

Meta’s move comes three years after it abandoned development on a version of the Instagram app meant for teenagers, after lawmakers and advocacy groups urged the company to drop it, citing safety concerns.

In July, the U.S. Senate advanced two online safety bills – The Kids Online Safety Act and The Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act – that would force social media companies to take responsibility for how their platforms affect children and teens.

As part of the update, the under-18 Instagram users will be notified to close the app after 60 minutes each day. The accounts will also come with a default sleep mode that will silence notifications overnight.

Meta said it will place the identified users into teen accounts within 60 days in the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia, and in the European Union later this year. Teens around the world will start to get teen accounts in January.

Lenovo begins AI server production in India, opens R-D lab in Bengaluru

Lenovo begins AI server production in India, opens R-D lab in Bengaluru

Beijing-headquartered Lenovo announced the launch of its manufacturing unit for AI-powered servers in India and also set up a research and development (R&D) lab in Bengaluru.

The PC maker’s production plant will be based in Puducherry, which will manufacture 50,000 enterprise AI servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units annually.

The Puducherry plant is an existing hub for the company and will cater to both domestic and international demand. Company executives at an event today in Bengaluru said that over 60 per cent of production is set for export across the Asia-Pacific region.

The plant will manufacture five key offerings, including three rack-mounted enterprise AI servers and two flagship 8-way GPU servers.

Amar Babu, president – Asia Pacific, Lenovo, said, “This development marks a significant step toward achieving both Lenovo’s and the Indian government’s ‘AI for All’ vision. We remain committed to driving India’s growth as an innovation hub by expanding our global manufacturing footprint and harnessing the strength of Indian talent and the industry ecosystem for technology R&D.”

Lenovo also announced the setting up of an AI-led R&D lab. This lab will focus on all future server designs, developments, and technical initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to R&D.

These developments are part of the $1 billion investment over the next three years that the company announced in 2023.

“We are excited about the growth potential this brings, not just for Lenovo, but for India as a global innovation hub,” said Amit Luthra, managing director, Lenovo ISG India.

The Bengaluru R&D Lab is the fourth such infrastructure and R&D lab globally. The other three are in Morrisville, US, Beijing, and Taipei.

Lenovo established manufacturing in India nearly two decades ago and began Motorola R&D about a decade ago. Recently, it achieved key milestones, including launching a Global Shared Support Center and PMA-compliant PCs with made-in-India motherboards.

“Our commitment to developing local talent and supporting India’s tech economy is long-term. With today’s announcement of AI server manufacturing in India, we complete Lenovo’s pocket-to-cloud technologies ‘Made in India’ for the world. The Infrastructure R&D Lab’s focus on designing and developing next-generation mainstream servers further underscores Lenovo’s dedication to ‘R&D in India for the world,’” said Shailendra Katyal, managing director, Lenovo India.

Facebook owner Meta bans Russia state media over 'foreign interference'

Facebook owner Meta bans Russia state media over 'foreign interference'

Meta said it’s banning Russia state media organisation from its social media platforms, alleging that the outlets used deceptive tactics to amplify Moscow’s propaganda. The announcement drew a rebuke from the Kremlin on Tuesday.

The company, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, said late Monday that it will roll out the ban over the next few days in an escalation of its efforts to counter Russia’s covert influence operations.

After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets: Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity,” Meta said in a prepared statement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov lashed out, saying that such selective actions against Russian media are unacceptable, and that Meta with these actions are discrediting themselves.

We have an extremely negative attitude towards this. And this, of course, complicates the prospects for normalizing our relations with Meta, Peskov told reporters during his daily conference call.

Meta’s actions comes days after the United States announced new sanctions on RT, accusing the Kremlin news outlet of being a key part of Russia’s war machine and its efforts to undermine its democratic adversaries.

US officials alleged last week that RT was working hand-in-hand with the Russian military and running fundraising campaigns to pay for sniper rifles, body armour and other equipment for soldiers fighting in Ukraine. They also said RT websites masqueraded as legitimate news sites but were used to spread disinformation and propaganda in Europe, Africa, South America and elsewhere.

Earlier this month, the Biden administration seized Kremlin-run websites and charged two RT employees of covertly providing millions of dollars in funding to a Tennessee-based content creation company to publish English-language social media videos pushing pro-Kremlin messages.

Moscow has rejected the allegations.

Two years ago, Meta took steps to limit Moscow’s online influence by taking down a sprawling disinformation network originating in Russia that sought to use hundreds of fake social media accounts and dozens of sham news websites to spread Kremlin talking points about the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian authorities designated Meta as an extremist group in March 2022, shortly after sending troops into Ukraine, and blocked Facebook and Instagram.

Both platforms as well as Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, which is also blocked were popular with Russians before the invasion and the subsequent crackdown on independent media and other forms of critical speech. The social media platforms are now only accessible through virtual private networks.

In April, a court in Russia convicted Meta communications director Andy Stone of justifying terrorism and sentenced him to six years in prison in a swift trial in absentia. The charges against Stone stemmed from his remarks in 2022 following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24 that year.

Stone, who is based in the United States, announced temporary changes to Meta’s hate speech policy to allow for forms of political expression that would normally violate (its) rules, like violent speech such as death to the Russian invaders.’

In the same statement, Stone added that credible calls for violence against Russian civilians would remain banned. The Russian authorities opened a criminal case implicating Stone and other unidentified Meta employees nonetheless, describing the statement as illegal calls to violence and killings of Russian citizens.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 series: What to expect

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 series is expected to be available in two sizes: a 12.4-inch model and a 14.6-inch Ultra model. Samsung is anticipated to eliminate the smaller 11-inch model from the line-up this year. Both the standard and Ultra models are expected to resemble their predecessors, with minor design changes. The Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is likely to feature a notch design on the top in landscape orientation to house dual front-facing cameras and will come with slightly slimmer bezels.

According to a report by Android Authority, Samsung plans to use MediaTek chips to power all upcoming Galaxy Tab S10 devices, likely the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 Plus chip. This contradicts previous reports suggesting a dual-chip strategy that would involve using Samsung’s own Exynos chips in certain regions.

Additionally, Samsung is reportedly planning to include a dedicated Galaxy AI key on Bluetooth keyboards and folio cases for the Galaxy Tab S10 series, similar to the Copilot button on new Windows laptops.
