President Donald
Trump said that American oil companies were prepared to enter
Venezuela and invest to restore production in the South American
country, an announcement that came just hours after Nicolás
Maduro was captured and removed by U.S. forces.

“We’re going to have our very large U.S. oil companies, the
biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars,
fix the badly broken infrastructure, oil infrastructure, and
start making money for the country,” Trump said on Saturday.

While Chevron is the only American major with current
operations in Venezuela, Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips
, among others, have storied histories in the country.

“We’re closely watching developments involving Venezuela,
including the potential implications for global energy markets,”
an API spokesperson told Reuters.
Chevron, which exports around 150,000 bpd of crude ‌from
Venezuela to the U.S. Gulf Coast, said it is ‌focused on the
safety and wellbeing of its employees, in addition to the
integrity of its assets.

Trump’s ‍plans to have large U.S. oil companies enter
Venezuela and get “oil flowing” will be hindered by lack of
infrastructure that will require ‍many years and heavy
investment, analysts said. “There are still many questions that
need to be answered about the state of the Venezuelan oil
industry, but it is clear that it will take tens of billions of
dollars to turn that industry around,” said Peter McNally,
Global Head of Sector Analysts at Third Bridge, adding that it
could take at least a decade of Western oil majors committing to
the country.

A U.S. embargo on all Venezuelan oil, meanwhile, remains in
full effect, Trump said. He told reporters that the U.S.
military forces would remain in position until U.S. demands had
been fully met.

“The American armada remains poised in position, and the
U.S. retains all military options until United States demands
have been fully met and fully satisfied,” he said.

India advises nationals to avoid travel to Venezuela after Maduro capture

India advises nationals to avoid travel to Venezuela after Maduro capture

Venezuela has declared a national emergency after the US action, triggering political uncertainty and global reactions.

India on Saturday night advised its nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela after the US captured the South American country’s President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a military operation.

The Ministry of External Affairs also asked all Indians who are in Venezuela to exercise extreme caution and restrict their movements.

The US carried out the military assault on the Venezuelan capital Caracas after consistently accusing Maduro of being involved in drug trafficking. The president of the oil-rich country had stridently denied the charge.

US troops have taken Maduro and his wife to the US. Venezuela declared a national emergency after the US action.

“In view of recent developments in Venezuela, Indian nationals are strongly advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela,” the external affairs ministry said.

“All Indians who are in Venezuela for any reason are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in contact with the Embassy of India in Caracas,” it said.

The ministry asked the Indians to get in touch with the embassy through phone number +58-412-9584288 (also for WhatsApp calls) and email ID cons.caracas@mea.gov.in.

There are around 50 Non-Resident Indians and 30 Persons of Indian Origin in Venezuela, according to the embassy in Caracas.

The US action has triggered political uncertainty in the South American country, with many leading powers, including Russia and China, slamming Washington for the operation and capture of Maduro and his wife.

Hours after the operation in Caracas, Trump posted a photo of Maduro aboard the US warship USS Iwo Jima.

Maduro has been brought to New York, where he will face charges relating to supporting drug cartels, according to US authorities.

Trump said at a news conference that the US will run Venezuela until a transition of power can take place. “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” he said.

The US president also said that the “extremely successful” operation should serve as a warning to anyone who would threaten American sovereignty or endanger American lives.

India has not yet reacted to the US action.

Crude Check: Weak Outlook

Crude Check: Weak Outlook

Brent crude oil futures on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) ($60.80/barrel) was up 0.8 per cent whereas crude oil futures in the domestic market (₹5,155/barrel) lost 0.5 per cent. Here is the outlook and trade recommendation.

Brent futures ($60.80)

Brent crude oil futures was trading flat last week. But the price movement since October, where the contract has been making lower highs and lower lows, hints at the possibility of further fall from the current level.

That said, the downswing can be limited as there is a key support ahead at $58.50. If there is a recovery on the back of this, Brent crude oil futures can rise to $64 and then possibly to $70.

But if the support at $58.50 is breached, it will open the door for a deeper decline to $53 and $46.

MCX-Crude oil (₹5,155)

Crude oil futures (January) attempted to recover early last week. However, it could not surpass the 50-day moving average at ₹5,275. The contract then gradually slid to post a weekly loss of 0.5 per cent. The price is also below the 21-day moving average, which is at ₹5,220.

The chart shows a bearish tilt and the likelihood of further moderation in price is high. From the current level, the contract can drop to ₹5,000. Support below this is at ₹4,800.

On the other hand, if crude oil futures rebound from the support (either ₹5,000 or ₹4,800), it can rise to ₹5,470. Only a decisive breakout of ₹5,470 can make the outlook bullish.

Trade strategy: Last week, we suggested going short on crude oil futures (January) at ₹5,230. Retain this trade and maintain stop-loss at ₹5,330. Book profits at ₹5,000.

Futures and Options Trading:

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has planned to train one lakh cadets as first responders in the wake of natural disasters, and raise a group of ‘cyber warriors’ who can contribute to bolstering India’s digital defence mechanism, a top official said on Saturday.

These will be integrated with the national database, Director General, NCC, Lt Gen Virendra Vats said during a press conference on the NCC’s Republic Day Camp 2026 that began on December 30 at the Cariappa Parade Ground at Delhi Cantonment.

He announced that for the “first time, parade and contingent commanders of the NCC will march carrying a sword during the 2026 Republic Day Parade, “at par” with the members of military contingents.

Drone training hubs

The officer also said the NCC has started work on raising four to five hubs across the country where select cadets can be trained on drone and counter-drone aspects.

A total of 2,406 NCC cadets, including 898 girls, from across the country are participating in the annual camp this year. More than 200 cadets from over 20 friendly foreign countries, including Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Bangladesh, Nepal and Malaysia, are also taking part.

The month-long camp features several inter-directorate competitions and events like the best cadet competition, small arms firing, marching contingent during the Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path, and flag area designing.

This year, 127 cadets from Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh Union territories, and 131 cadets from the Northeastern region are participating, officials said.

Strength expansion plan

Lt Gen Vats, in response to a query, said the NCC plans to increase its strength from 17 lakh to 20 lakh in a phased manner, and “we plan to achieve it by 2028”.

Girls cadets form 40 per cent of the total current strength, he added.

He also made a PowerPoint presentation on the occasion outlining various future plans of the NCC.

In coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the NCC has planned to train as many as one lakh cadets as “first responders” in the wake of any natural disaster, he said.

These cadets will be known as Yuva Apda Mitras, and they will be trained and linked with the national database, so that the services can be used by the nation in case of need in future, Lt Gen Vats said.

Furthermore, work is also in progress under a plan to raise 10,000 cadets as ‘cyber warriors’, “who can stand as a wall of digital defence, as today, the cyber domain is getting weaponised,” he told reporters.

They will be integrated with the national database, too, the NCC DG added.

“The idea is to raise cadets who are disciplined, have leadership qualities and possess a spirit of adventure,” he said.

The annual camp will be formally inaugurated by Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Monday.

Military leaders, including the Chief of the Defence Staff, the three service chiefs, and IAF’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, will be interacting with the cadets at the ongoing camp this month, officials said.

Astronaut Shukla recently visited the International Space Station (ISS) as part of an Axiom-4 mission, becoming the first Indian to do so.

Lt Gen Vats further said a PM Rally generally takes place every year on January 27 — after the Republic Day Parade on January 26 — but, due to some contingency, the event will be held on January 28 this time.

Soil collected from various islands of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago by NCC cadets during a sailing expedition will be presented in an urn to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the rally at Delhi Cantonment, he added.

Five different expeditions, including a running-cum-sailing expedition carried out at Lakshadweep and three cyclothons, would be flagged in by the prime minister on his visit to the NCC’s Republic Day Camp 2026.
