‘Deserved to lose’: Axar Patel slams Karun Nair after his double drop handed PBKS historic 265 chase vs DC

Following a high-scoring thriller at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel candidly admitted that his team ‘deserved to lose’ after a six-wicket defeat in their IPL 2026 encounter with Punjab Kings. Despite the Capitals setting a massive total of 264/2, their failure to defend the score led to a disappointing outcome. The primary factor in this defeat was a series of dropped catches that proved incredibly expensive.

Historic Chase by Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings extended their winning streak by completing the highest successful run chase in T20 history, reaching the 265-run target. The chase was anchored by openers Prabhsimran Singh, who hit 76 runs off 26 balls, and Priyansh Arya, who added 43 off 17. Captain Shreyas Iyer eventually secured the win with an unbeaten 71 off 36 deliveries.

Turning Point and Fielding Lapses

A critical moment occurred when Karun Nair dropped Shreyas Iyer twice within two overs. The first missed opportunity came in the 15th over when Iyer was on 28, followed by another in the 16th over when he was on 35. Iyer took full advantage of these reprieves to reach his half-century and lead his team to victory.

Axar Patel was vocal in his criticism of the team’s fielding. During the post-match presentation, he stated:

“Looking at the kind of wicket, if you don’t support your bowlers and keep giving away so many chances, then I feel we deserved to lose. That’s the main point. It was a good pitch and a small ground, so sixes were always going to be hit. However, when opportunities arise and you don’t take even one, you drop chances, as we did today. On a wicket like this, if you don’t back your bowlers, it becomes difficult.”

Bowling Unit Struggles

The Delhi bowling attack struggled significantly against the PBKS batters. Economy rates were high, with Mukesh Kumar and Auqib Nabi Dar conceding 18.30 and 20.50 runs per over, respectively. T. Natarajan also struggled with an economy of 14.10. While Kuldeep Yadav (11.50) and Axar Patel (11.00) were slightly more controlled, the collective performance allowed the opposition to stay ahead of the required rate.

Need for Strategic Review

Reflecting on the loss, Axar highlighted the need for a tactical reassessment of the bowling unit, especially during the powerplay, and a resolution to the fielding issues. He emphasized that 264 was a strong score and that repeating these mistakes is not an option.

“At the same time, we also need to look at our bowling unit. The way we bowled in the powerplay, the fast bowlers, the fielding, and the opportunities we missed were the main reasons. Because on a wicket like this, 264 was a very good score. It can’t keep happening that you come in every time and repeat the same mistakes. So I think we’ll go back, review it again, see what we can do, and where we can improve,” Axar concluded.

Kohli to Rahul to Suryavanshi to Abhishek – The Orange Cap changed hands 4 times in a day and IPL has never seen this before

Saturday’s IPL 2026 double-header served up one of the most thrilling Orange Cap battles the tournament has seen. Virat Kohli entered the day as the holder before KL Rahul knocked him off the perch with a commanding performance in the DC vs PBKS clash. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi then announced himself in spectacular fashion, clobbering a 36-ball century against SRH, his second IPL hundred, in the process becoming the youngest cricketer in history to reach 1000 runs in T20 cricket, a knock that temporarily handed him the season lead. However, Abhishek Sharma ensured the cap would not stay with the teenage sensation, firing a blistering 57 against Rajasthan Royals to leapfrog everyone and close out the evening as the tournament’s top run-scorer. At stumps, Abhishek sat on 380 runs for the season while Sooryavanshi and Rahul finished level in joint second position on 357 runs apiece.

Context on both games

Following the high-stakes encounter between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the IPL 2026 leaderboard has seen significant shifts. Sunrisers Hyderabad moved into third place after Rajasthan Royals failed to defend a total of 228, with SRH now leading RR on net run rate despite both teams holding 10 points.

Earlier in the day, the league-leading Punjab Kings maintained their position at the top of the table after completing a record-breaking run chase against the Delhi Capitals. The Capitals remain in the sixth position following their 4-run loss.

IPL 2026 DC vs PBKS: Delhi Police clear an entire city in 11 minutes – ‘The Green Corridor’ that saved Lungi Ngidi’s life – WATCH

Delhi Capitals fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was evacuated from Arun Jaitley Stadium by ambulance after sustaining a severe head injury during the IPL 2026 fixture between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings on Saturday. The emergency triggered a rapid, multi-agency response that successfully delivered the South African pacer to hospital in under a quarter of an hour.

What Happened on the Field

The alarming moment unfolded during the third over of Punjab Kings’ chase. Ngidi was positioned at mid-off when Priyansh Arya, facing bowling from DC captain Axar Patel, launched a lofted shot into the outfield. Ngidi moved backwards to attempt the catch but never appeared in complete control of the effort. He lost his footing while stretching, fell backwards without getting a fingertip to the ball, and struck his head forcefully against the turf.

He grabbed the back of his head in immediate pain and remained motionless on the grass, prompting a hushed, anxious reaction from the packed stadium. Medical personnel sprinted onto the field within moments. Though Ngidi was able to communicate with the attending staff through hand gestures, he was unable to move his neck and head, which prompted the application of a stabilising brace. His neck brace was carefully positioned before he was secured onto a stretcher. An ambulance was then driven directly onto the playing surface, and Ngidi was loaded inside and transported away from the ground.

Play was halted for 15 minutes during the incident. Teammates David Miller and Tristan Stubbs were visibly shaken at the sight of their colleague on the ground, while DC coach Hemang Badani was seen motioning for the neck brace to be applied. In an extraordinary show of sportsmanship, opposition coach Ricky Ponting also walked out to the field to check on the situation. The scenes prompted an unprecedented moment in the tournament’s history, as the appearance of an ambulance driving directly onto the pitch marked the first such occurrence across the 19-year lifespan of the Indian Premier League.

Green Corridor: Precision Under Pressure

Once the severity of the situation became apparent and a distress call was placed by IPL match organizers, the Delhi Traffic Police activated emergency protocols without delay. Working under the supervision of DCP Traffic Central Range, Nishant Gupta, and with ground coordination handled by ACP Traffic Central Sanjay Singh, the force synchronized efforts between traffic staff and the police control room to carve out a signal-free route through the city.

The ambulance was destined for BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, located near Rajendra Nagar Metro Station. Despite peak-hour traffic conditions that typically make movement across Delhi’s roads laborious, the corridor was cleared with complete efficiency. The ambulance completed the journey from the stadium to the hospital in just 11 minutes, a feat that has since drawn widespread praise as a textbook example of inter-agency coordination during a high-profile sporting event.

Official Confirmation and Concussion Substitute

The IPL issued a formal statement confirming the incident and providing an early update on Ngidi’s condition. The statement read: “Lungisani Ngidi of Delhi Capitals hit his head on the ground while attempting to take a catch during his team’s match against Punjab Kings. He was shifted to the hospital in an ambulance as he complained of a headache and neck pain. Ngidi is stable and is due to be discharged shortly from the hospital. Vipraj Nigam is on the field as a concussion substitute.”

Delhi Capitals also posted confirmation on their official X handle, echoing the stable condition update and extending gratitude to the medical teams and Delhi Traffic Police for their swift intervention. Leg-spin bowling allrounder Vipraj Nigam took Ngidi’s place in the DC lineup for the remainder of the match under the concussion substitute ruling.

Recovery and Return to Team Hotel

Following treatment at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Ngidi was discharged and transferred back to the Delhi Capitals team hotel in New Delhi. Sources speaking to IANS confirmed his improving condition, stating: “Lungi Ngidi is doing well and has now returned to the DC team hotel in New Delhi. Him being sent back to the hotel after being discharged from the hospital is a positive indication of his recovery, and the franchise medical staff will continue to take good care of him.” The franchise medical team was confirmed to be monitoring him closely going forward.

Ngidi’s Contribution to DC’s IPL 2026 Campaign

Before the injury brought his participation in the match to an abrupt end, Ngidi had been a meaningful contributor to the Delhi Capitals bowling attack throughout the season. Across seven matches in IPL 2026, he had claimed seven wickets at an average of 29.42, maintaining an economy rate of 8.70 with his finest figures standing at 3 for 27.

‘हमने बहुत सारे कैच…’, SRH के खिलाफ राजस्थान को क्यों मिली हार? रियान पराग ने दिया जवाब

‘हमने बहुत सारे कैच…’, SRH के खिलाफ राजस्थान को क्यों मिली हार? रियान पराग ने दिया जवाब

Why RR loss Against SRH:

IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma lead Sunrisers Hyderabad to five-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals

IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma lead Sunrisers Hyderabad to five-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals

Vice-captain Ishan Kishan played a brilliant knock of 74 runs as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 229 runs target in 18.3 overs and registered a dominant five-wicket win against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 36th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday.

Earlier, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed a brilliant century, followed by a half-century by Dhruv Jurel as the Rajasthan Royals posted 228/6 in 20 overs.

Chasing a massive target, Sunrisers Hyderabad had a shaky start as opener Travis Head was dismissed in the first over. He failed to make use of an early chance after being dropped by Dhruv Jurel off the first ball of Jofra Archer’s over, and scored just six off five balls.

However, the pressure didn’t last long as Nandre Burger’s next over released it, conceding 10 runs with a wide and a boundary. SRH vice-captain Ishan Kishan then counterattacked brilliantly, taking on Archer with three boundaries in the third over. Abhishek Sharma joined the charge, hitting three fours off Burger in the following over.

Abhishek also got a lifeline in the fifth over when Ravindra Jadeja dropped a simple catch. Kishan made full use of the momentum, smashing 19 runs in the final over of the powerplay as SRH raced to 89 runs in six overs.

Both batters brought up their fifties quickly, Abhishek off 24 balls and Kishan off 25,putting RR bowlers under immense pressure. Their 132-run partnership was finally broken on the last ball of the 10th over when Archer took a fine catch to dismiss Abhishek for 57 off 29 balls.

Kishan continued his aggressive batting alongside Heinrich Klaasen, keeping SRH firmly in control. He eventually fell for a match-winning 74 off 31 balls, edging a short ball from Archer.

After his dismissal, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Klaasen steadied the chase with smart running. Klaasen later hit a big six in the 17th over, with Nitish also clearing the ropes. Nitish scored 36 off 18 before getting out, while Klaasen made 29 off 24.

Salil Arora sealed the chase with a six as SRH reached the target with nine balls to spare.

Rajasthan Royals made a blazing start after being asked to bat first, led by young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who dominated from the outset. He smashed four sixes in the opening over off Praful Hinge, collecting 25 runs and setting the tone. The momentum continued as Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a six each off Pat Cummins in the next over.

Sunrisers Hyderabad got an early breakthrough when Eshan Malinga dismissed Jaiswal for 10, but RR kept up the scoring rate. Sooryavanshi brought up a rapid half-century in just 15 balls as RR reached 73/1 at the end of the powerplay.

He then built a strong partnership with Dhruv Jurel, who played a composed yet impactful knock. Jurel accelerated in the middle overs, including a 101-metre six, and reached his fifty before falling to Nitish Kumar Reddy for 51 off 25 balls.

Sooryavanshi continued his aggressive approach and raced to a stunning century in just 36 balls, eventually scoring 103 off 37 deliveries before being dismissed. RR lost Riyan Parag cheaply, but Donovan Ferreira’s quick 33 off 16 balls ensured a strong finish, with Shimron Hetmyer adding 11 runs.

For SRH, Malinga picked up 2/38, while Cummins, Hinge, Sakib Hussain and Nitish Kumar Reddy took one wicket each.

Brief Scores: Rajasthan Royals 228/6 in 20 overs (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 103, Dhruv Jurel 51; Donovan Ferreira 33; Eshan Malinga 2-38, Nitish Kumar Reddy 1-20) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 229 in 18.3 overs (Ishan Kishan 74, Abhishek Sharma 57; Jofra Archer 2-34, Brijesh Sharma 2-44) by five wickets.
