IPL 2026 predicted as MS Dhoni’s last season; CSK legend set for Iconic goodbye

IPL 2026 predicted as MS Dhoni’s last season; CSK legend set for Iconic goodbye

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 chasing a record sixth title and the former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan believes it can be the last IPL season for the former CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Pathan said, “CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it’s tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him. This season, Dhoni will play an important role in bringing everyone together. I’m not sure how many games he will play. But his presence in the dressing room will help a lot.”

Speaking on the newly traded player in the CSK side, Sanju Samson, he said, “Sanju will benefit because he will be part of the leadership group as well. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the leader. But as a group, two or three guys are being groomed for the future. That is where MS Dhoni comes in. I hope he makes a difference. Questions about his fitness, batting position, and whether he will play all games will still come up. The CSK team management will take it step by step. They will definitely look to give him a perfect farewell by lifting their sixth IPL trophy.”

Dhoni has led CSK to five IPL titles, and at the age of 44, he is ready to represent CSK again in the upcoming IPL edition. He has been part of all 19 editions of the IPL so far.

Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been traded to Rajasthan Royals from Chennai Super Kings, and Pathan believes that the uncapped all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh, Prashant Veer, can fill up his shoes in the CSK.

On how CSK can fill the void left by Ravindra Jadeja, Pathan said, “Jadeja became the player he is with time. When he played for Rajasthan Royals in the first two IPL seasons, Shane Warne gave him confidence and told him he was a future superstar. That gave him a lot of belief. With time, he reached the level he is at today. Then he joined CSK in 2012. The same can happen with Prashant Veer. Playing for CSK at a young age gives you a lot of cushion. If you are in the starting XI from the beginning of the season, you will play most games. That is a big plus.”

“CSK keeps it simple for young players. With MS Dhoni and the experienced guys around, and Stephen Fleming as Coach, they make things easy on and off the field. When you have that kind of simplicity in a high-pressure environment like the IPL, it helps a lot. So, for Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer, it is an exciting and learning time at CSK,” Pathan concluded.

‘Will have to take a call’: BCCI breaks silence on Kavya Maran’s Sunrisers buying Abrar Ahmed in auctions

‘Will have to take a call’: BCCI breaks silence on Kavya Maran’s Sunrisers buying Abrar Ahmed in auctions

Amid the uproar over Pakistani cricketer Abrar Ahmed being signed by Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred auction, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla on Friday said the Board cannot intervene as the signing is related to a foreign league and the franchise will have to take a call.

Speaking to ANI, Shukla said, “It is not in our domain (IPL), they have done it for some foreign league. They will have to take a call; we cannot do anything.”

Sunrisers Leeds bought the leg-spinner for £190,000 (US$255,000) during the inaugural men’s Hundred auction in London, making him the first Pakistan player to be signed by an Indian-owned team in the tournament.

The signing has sparked backlash on social media against Sunrisers Leeds co-owner Kavya Maran, with critics pointing to alleged remarks by the 27-year-old spinner mocking the Indian Air Force and Army during the period surrounding the events of Operation Sindoor in May last year.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the Indian media conglomerate Sun TV completed a full takeover of the franchise, formerly known as Northern Superchargers, last year. The group bought a 49 per cent stake from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the remaining 51 per cent from Yorkshire for around £100 million. Stakes in three other Hundred teams were also sold to investors who own IPL franchises.

Sunrisers, whose sister franchises Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20, have never previously signed an active Pakistan player. The Leeds-based side won a bidding war with Trent Rockets to secure Abrar shortly before the lunch break.

The auction had drawn scrutiny over whether the four franchises owned by IPL investors would bid for Pakistan players amid reports of a possible ‘shadow-ban’, despite the eight teams committing to selections based on “performance, availability and the needs of each team”.

Abrar was the second Pakistan player sold in the auction after Usman Tariq, who was picked up by Birmingham Phoenix for £140,000 (US$187,000). Trent Rockets and Phoenix are co-owned by their host counties, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire, respectively, along with American investor groups.

Pakistan players have featured for several global T20 teams owned or part-owned by IPL franchises, but no active Pakistan international has played in the IPL since 2008 due to the long-standing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

‘SA allowed WI to beat them, India would have been out’: Michael Vaughan slams SA as ‘the stupidest team’ for helping India win T20 WC 2026

‘SA allowed WI to beat them, India would have been out’: Michael Vaughan slams SA as ‘the stupidest team’ for helping India win T20 WC 2026

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has sparked a massive debate by labeling South Africa the “stupidest team” of the T20 World Cup 2026. According to Vaughan, the Proteas’ victory over the West Indies in the Super 8 stage at Ahmedabad was a strategic blunder that ultimately allowed India to survive and eventually lift the trophy.

The Survival of the “Juggernaut”

The Aiden Markram led side defeated the West Indies by nine wickets in a crucial Super 8 fixture. This result, followed by India’s victory over Zimbabwe on the same day, ensured that the Indian team remained in contention for the semi finals. Vaughan argued on the “Stick to Cricket” podcast that had South Africa lost that game, India would have been eliminated before reaching the knockout stages.

“I tell you, who I think is the stupidest team of the tournament? South Africa. Because if South Africa had allowed the West Indies to beat them in the Super 8s, India would have been knocked out. I’m just saying  if they had cleared them out, the juggernaut that was coming would have stopped,” Vaughan remarked.

The Path to the Title

Vaughan noted that the momentum India gained from that survival was unstoppable. India proceeded to beat Zimbabwe, then triumphed over the West Indies in what was effectively a quarter final, before dismantling England in the semi finals.

“By winning that game, they allowed the juggernaut to go on. India then beat Zimbabwe, then the West Indies in a kind of quarterfinal, and then England. South Africa had to play Zimbabwe next, and they even rested three players for that match,” Vaughan explained.

The 51 year old pundit suggested that teams should be more cutthroat when they have the chance to remove a tournament favorite. “Look, these things shouldn’t happen and usually don’t happen. I’m just saying that if you want to win a World Cup, the best way is to eliminate the best team early,” he added.

Tournament Turning Points

The victory over Zimbabwe turned India’s final group game against the West Indies into a virtual quarter final. In that high stakes match, Sanju Samson’s brilliant unbeaten 97 led the co hosts to a five wicket win, securing their semi final berth and knocking the West Indies out of their own home tournament.

While India’s path led them to glory in Ahmedabad against New Zealand, South Africa’s journey ended in disappointment. The Proteas traveled to Kolkata for the first semi final against New Zealand, where they were overwhelmed by the Mitchell Santner led squad. The match was defined by a historic performance from Finn Allen, who struck a 33 ball century to secure a nine wicket win for the Kiwis.

Strategic Retrospective

Vaughan’s comments highlight the thin margins of tournament cricket. While South Africa played for pride and professional integrity, the “England legend” believes they inadvertently paved the way for India’s dominance. Whether it was “stupidity” or simply the spirit of the game, the result allowed the Suryakumar Yadav led side to find their rhythm and eventually deliver a world title to the home fans.

Rafale mockers go unsold: Pakistani cricketers Haris Rauf, Fatima Sana hit hard at The Hundred auctions

Rafale mockers go unsold: Pakistani cricketers Haris Rauf, Fatima Sana hit hard at The Hundred auctions

The 2026 Hundred auction has sent a shockwave through the cricketing world as several high profile Pakistani stars, including Haris Rauf and national captain Fatima Sana, went unsold. While scheduling conflicts were officially cited, industry insiders point to a deeper narrative involving past provocations and the growing influence of Indian ownership in global franchise leagues.

The Shadow of the Rafale and 6-0 Gestures

The auction snub is being viewed by many as a direct consequence of actions during the previous Asia Cup. Fast bowler Haris Rauf and other members of the squad were seen making “Rafale” wing signs and “6-0” gestures, which were widely interpreted as mocking references to historical military and sporting tensions with India. These actions have seemingly come back to haunt the players as franchises with Indian ties exercised their right to bypass these athletes to avoid public relations disasters.

The reluctance of franchises is heightened by the current situation facing Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The team is currently battling intense social media backlash and fan anger following their signing of Abrar Ahmed. This recent controversy served as a warning to other owners who realized that drafting Pakistani players, particularly those involved in past “mocking” incidents, would lead to immediate and severe backlash from a global fan base.

Strategic Withdrawals and Missed Opportunities

The men’s auction faced drama even before it commenced when ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi withdrew his name. Afridi was originally listed in the Tier 1 fast bowlers category and had previously played for Welsh Fire, but he was one of five overseas players to pull out. The ECB confirmed that Quinton de Kock, Sunil Narine, AM Ghazanfar, and Peter Siddle also withdrew.

While official statements pointed to clashes with the Caribbean Premier League, the reality of the auction room was far colder. With 13 Pakistani players remaining in the pool, teams remained cautious. In response to the growing scrutiny, the ECB and the eight franchises released a joint clarification stating that all selections would be based on “performance, availability, and the needs of each team.”

A Total Wipeout in the Women’s Category

The situation was even more dire for the women’s team. Despite their international standing, not a single Pakistani woman secured a contract. National captain Fatima Sana, along with Muneeba Ali, Diana Baig, and Sadia Iqbal, entered with a base price of £15,000 but received zero bids.

This total exclusion suggests that the “backlash factor” has become a primary consideration for franchise owners. With many Hundred teams now featuring Indian investment, the decision to avoid players who have publicly mocked their primary market appears to be a calculated business move. Consequently, Pakistan’s presence in The Hundred has been drastically reduced, proving that off field conduct and geopolitical sensitivities now carry as much weight as on field performance in the franchise era.
