Why Shubman Gill was left out of India’s T20I squad despite 732 IPL runs? Selectors reveal special WC 2027 plan: Report

Despite delivering a phenomenal performance for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 season, where he guided his franchise to the finals and amassed 732 runs, Shubman Gill is unlikely to feature in India’s shortest format plans for the foreseeable future. A report by news agency as qouted by Hindustan Times reveals that the national selection committee, spearheaded by Ajit Agarkar, harbors severe concerns regarding potential player burnout for the current Indian Test and ODI captain. Consequently, the team management has explicitly communicated to Gill that his primary focus must remain on the longest format and one day internationals moving forward.

This development follows Saturday’s official squad announcements for the upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England, alongside the roster for the Asian Games. Gill’s name was conspicuously absent from all lists, extending a hiatus from India’s T20I playing XI that dates back to January of this year.

The 26 year old right hander had successfully staged a return to the T20I setup during last year’s Asia Cup, but a subsequent dip in form led to his exclusion right before the T20 World Cup. Although he flipped the narrative with a spectacular IPL campaign to finish as the tournament’s second highest run aggregator, the selectors remain firm on managing his extensive workload by keeping him sidelined from international T20s.

“The selectors are concerned that there shouldn’t be a burn-out case with Gill,”  a BCCI source said.

“The communication is clear that he needs to be fit for these two ICC assignments. Plus, he will play the IPL where he leads the Gujarat Titans,” the source added.

Gill’s injury concerns

The decision is heavily informed by Gill’s recent physical setbacks. Last year, following an exhausting, months long non stop schedule, the skipper suffered acute neck spasms. The injury forced him to miss the second Test match and the entire ODI leg of the tour against South Africa. Gill’s grueling itinerary prior to the injury had included five Test matches against England, the Asia Cup, a two Test series against the West Indies, and both white ball formats against Australia, before his body finally gave out during the opening Test match against the Proteas in Kolkata.

Strategic Planning For Long Term Targets

The Indian national team faces a packed calendar leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the squad scheduled to feature in 35 ODIs prior to the marquee event. In addition to the white ball commitments, India faces crucial Test series against heavyweight opponents New Zealand and Australia, setups where Gill’s presence is deemed absolutely vital.

With the next major T20 milestones, including the Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, not arriving until 2028, selectors feel there is ample time to reintegrate Gill into the shortest format down the line. For the time being, his roadmap is strictly centered around Test matches and fifty over cricket.

“There is still a lot of time left for the two marquee T20 events in 2028. For Gill, the focus is on the immediate future. Two years from now, no one knows which player will be in what form or fitness. So this is the play till the 2027 ODI World Cup,” the source further added.

Shubman Gill scripts history vs Afghanistan surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, becomes 1st Indian captain to…

India captain Shubman Gill continued his prolific form with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 103 as the hosts reached a dominant 368/3 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. In doing so, the Punjab batter also entered the record books with a unique achievement never before accomplished by an Indian cricketer.

Gill Carries IPL Form Into the Test Arena

Fresh from an outstanding Indian Premier League campaign in which he amassed 732 runs for Gujarat Titans at a strike rate of 163.02, Gill looked equally comfortable in the longest format.

The right hander reached his 11th Test century in style, remaining unbeaten after facing 143 deliveries. His knock helped India take complete control of proceedings after opting to bat first. Gill also stitched together an unbroken 121 run partnership for the fourth wicket alongside Rishabh Pant, ensuring the hosts ended the day firmly on top.

Historic Record Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar

The century was significant for more than just the scoreboard. During his innings, Gill crossed the milestone of 1,000 Test runs as captain, becoming the first Indian skipper to achieve the feat within a year of taking charge. He reached the landmark in just 351 days, eclipsing the previous Indian record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who had taken 405 days to reach the same mark. Gill is also only the 11th Test captain overall to score 1,000 runs within a year of assuming leadership responsibilities.

Remarkable Rise Since Taking Over Captaincy

Gill, who succeeded Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain ahead of last year’s England tour, has enjoyed a dream start to his leadership tenure. The 26 year old announced himself as a captain of substance during the inaugural Anderson Tendulkar Trophy, where he finished as the leading run scorer of the series with 754 runs across five Tests. Playing in front of his home crowd in Punjab and with family members watching from the stands, Gill once again delivered when it mattered most, adding another memorable century to his growing list of achievements.

Overcoming Injury Setbacks

The Indian skipper has already faced challenges during his captaincy stint. Last October, he scored an unbeaten 129 in the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi. However, a neck spasm suffered during the opening Test against South Africa in Kolkata forced him to miss a large portion of that series. During his absence, Rishabh Pant stepped in to lead the side.

Rahul Celebrates Vice Captaincy With a Century

Gill was not the only Indian batter to enjoy success against an Afghanistan bowling attack missing star leg spinner Rashid Khan. KL Rahul marked his promotion to vice captain with an impressive century, scoring 100 from 165 deliveries. The experienced batter, however, was dismissed shortly after reaching the landmark.

Sai Sudharsan and Pant Add to Afghanistan’s Woes

B Sai Sudharsan also made a valuable contribution with 81 runs, while Pant remained unbeaten on 50 from 70 balls at the close of play. The wicketkeeper batter brought up his half century shortly before stumps and will resume alongside Gill on Day 2 as India look to build on their commanding position.

India Finish Day 1 in Complete Control

At the end of 85 overs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, India stood at 368/3, with Gill and Pant unbeaten at the crease and Afghanistan facing an uphill battle heading into the second day of the contest.

‘Not even dust of their feet: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s father shuts down Sachin and Bradman comparisons after India selection

‘Not even dust of their feet: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s father shuts down Sachin and Bradman comparisons after India selection

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken Indian cricket by storm. At just 15 years old, the teenage batting prodigy from Samastipur, Bihar has become the youngest cricketer ever selected for the Indian senior men’s team  breaking a record held by the great Sachin Tendulkar himself. But as the cricketing world rushes to crown its next legend, his father Sanjeev Sooryavanshi has a clear and firm message: slow down.

Talking to NDTV, Sanjeev reflected on the moment that changed his family’s life forever, the mindset that makes his son genuinely different, and why comparisons to all-time greats are not just premature but simply unfair.

A Dream Fulfilled, A Heart Pounding

The morning of the squad announcement was not a calm one in the Sooryavanshi household.

“Last night he told me that the team selection would be announced at 1 pm today. My heart was pounding,” Sanjeev recalled. “I told him not to worry, he has played well, and things will turn out well.”

At the time of the announcement, Vaibhav was not at home celebrating with his family. He was in Sri Lanka, training with the India A squad for an ongoing tri-nation series,  a detail that speaks volumes about the teenager’s relentless focus on cricket even as history was being made around him.

“This is a huge moment for our family. A very big dream has been fulfilled. I haven’t spoken to Vaibhav yet. I will speak to him soon,” Sanjeev said, the emotion evident in every word.

Not Sachin. Not Bradman. Just Vaibhav

The comparisons were inevitable. When a 15-year-old breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record as India’s youngest international cricketer, the cricketing world reaches for the biggest names it knows, Sanjeev wants no part of it.

“It’s not right to compare Vaibhav to Sachin or Bradman. These players have performed at a very high level over a long period,” he said plainly. “Right now, Vaibhav is not even equal to the dust of their feet. Such comparisons should not be made.”

It is a remarkably grounded statement from a father whose son has just made history. But those who know Sanjeev Sooryavanshi say this measured, demanding outlook is precisely what has shaped the teenager into what he is today.

The Brian Lara Blueprint

While the world reaches for Tendulkar comparisons, the Sooryavanshi household has always looked to a different legend: Brian Lara.

“Brian Lara is a left-hander, and so is Vaibhav. I really like Lara’s batting, so I used to show him Lara’s videos,” Sanjeev explained. “He has also watched videos of Lara, Yuvraj, and many other cricketers.”

But despite those influences, Sanjeev is careful to draw a clear distinction between inspiration and imitation.

“His game is unique,” he said firmly. “He plays his own kind of cricket.”

The Six Off Ball One Strategy

Perhaps nothing defines Vaibhav Sooryavanshi more vividly than his habit of attacking elite bowlers from the very first delivery — hitting sixes off Jasprit Bumrah, Pat Cummins, and some of the world’s most feared pace attacks before they have even settled into their rhythm. It looks like fearlessness. According to his father, it is something far more calculated.

“Whenever he went to play, older boys used to call him a kid,” Sanjeev revealed. “When I pointed out a big bowler from the opposition, he would go after that bowler and hit a six.”

The reasoning behind it came directly from Vaibhav himself.

“Papa, if I hit him for a six, the other bowlers won’t dominate me,” the teenager told his father. “It’s his own strategy,” Sanjeev confirmed. “He wants people to recognise him by his game, not judge him by his age.”

All Three Formats – No Exceptions

With his T20 brilliance already on full display  including a stunning 35-ball century in IPL 2025 and the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 with 776 runs  it would be easy to assume Vaibhav is a pure white-ball cricketer. His father says that assumption is completely wrong.

“All three formats. He wants to play in all formats,” Sanjeev said. “You’ve seen him play aggressively in the IPL, but he has also scored 332 runs in a 50-over match. He likes red-ball cricket equally.”The Bihar Father’s Standard

Wants him to achieve more

When asked whether he was finally happy  now that his son had achieved the ultimate dream of representing India Sanjeev gave an answer that perfectly captures the demanding, loving standard he has always held.

“Yes, I am very happy. But parents in Bihar are like that no matter how well a child does, a father wants him to achieve even more,” he said. “If he scores runs, we think he should score a few more. The key thing is winning matches for the team. If the team wins, runs will follow.”

A Brother Waiting in the Wings

And for those wondering whether lightning might strike twice in the Sooryavanshi family Sanjeev has a quiet warning ready.

Vaibhav’s younger brother Ashirwad, a right-handed batter, is already drawing attention in cricketing circles. His father admits the talent is real, even if the spotlight has not yet arrived.

“Vaibhav is different. But Ashirwad also plays well,” Sanjeev said. “He hits similarly. You’ll soon see him perform well too.”

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is currently with the India A squad in Sri Lanka and is expected to join the senior team for the T20I series against Ireland beginning June 26 in Belfast.

‘As he is a child, we have decided to’: BCCI permits Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s parents to travel with him on England and Ireland tour, will cover all costs

The fifteen year old batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has carved his name into cricketing folklore by securing his spot as the youngest ever cricketer to be named in India’s senior national setup. The teenage prodigy’s breathtaking talent earned him selection in the T20I squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. In a show of immense trust in his potential, the national selectors have also included the youngster in the squad for the Asian Games scheduled for later this year.

A Caring Approach for a Teen Prodigy

Understanding the extraordinary pressure of introducing a teenage cricketer to the demands of international competition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken a compassionate step to ease his transition. The governing body has officially permitted the young batsman’s parents to accompany him on his maiden overseas tours.

His father, Sanjeev Sooryavanshi, and mother, Aarti Sooryavanshi, will travel alongside him to Ireland and England. This arrangement will provide a vital emotional support system and a familiar environment as the teenager takes his historic first steps on the international stage.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia explained the board’s decision:

“As he is a child, we have decided to allow his parents to accompany him to Ireland and England, so that they can be with him and help him settle in the new environment. The Board will cover all their expenses,” Saikia told Sportstar.

India A tour currently

Sooryavanshi is currently stationed in Sri Lanka, where he is gaining crucial exposure with the India A squad in an ongoing tri nation series. Even at this early stage, the prodigy is playing under an intense and ever growing public spotlight. By ensuring his parents are nearby, the BCCI leadership aims to shield the young batsman from external distractions, allowing him to stay grounded and focus entirely on his game.

Official India T20I Squad Configurations

The BCCI has confirmed the official squads under the newly appointed captaincy of Shreyas Iyer:
