Two Titles, still ignored: Tilak Varma’s vice-captaincy ends RCB captain Rajat Patidar’s India leadership dream: Report

India’s T20I leadership picture has become significantly clearer, but it has also thrown up a question that few saw coming. As per a report by Dainik Jagran, Shreyas Iyer is set to be named India’s new T20I captain for the upcoming series against Ireland and England, with Tilak Varma confirmed as his deputy replacing Axar Patel. While the headline decision centres on Iyer, two names sitting on the fringes of this conversation deserve equal attention; Rajat Patidar and Tilak Varma.

Rajat Patidar’s Absence From the Captaincy Debate Raises Eyebrows

The most striking aspect of this entire captaincy fiacso is what did not happen. Rajat Patidar, who led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back IPL titles in consecutive seasons, was never seriously discussed as a candidate which is a remarkable ommission. Winning one IPL title as captain is considered a significant achievement, Winning two consecutively puts a captain in elite company and winning it back to back makes you at par with likes of Indian cricket legends MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Yet despite those credentials, the Madhya Pradesh boy’s name never entered the conversation at the national level.

What Do Selectors Really Value in a Captain?

Patidar’s exclusion raises legitimate questions about what the selectors and team management value when assessing leadership potential for international cricket. If sustained success in the IPL is not enough to earn a place in the conversation, then factors beyond captaincy achievements appear to be carrying greater weight in the decision-making process.

Tilak Varma’s Elevation Signals a Long-Term Plan

Tilak Varma’s appointment as vice-captain is being read by many as a long-term investment rather than simply a present-day decision. Unlike Patidar, Tilak has never captained an IPL franchise. His leadership experience comes from leading his state side, which, while credible, does not carry the same weight as franchise captaincy at the highest domestic level.

Deputy Today, Future Captain Tomorrow?

However, selectors appear to be backing his potential over a proven leadership track record. Tilak is already being viewed in some circles as a future Mumbai Indians captain, and his age makes him an attractive long-term project. According to reports, Rohit Sharma has backed him as the next MI captain and the choice will surely between him Varma and Jasprit Bumrah. And now with India planning for the next two T20 World Cup cycles, the vice-captaincy role could serve as an audition for a bigger leadership position down the line.

Gambhir, Samson and the Internal Differences

The BCCI Apex Council’s online meeting is expected to formally ratify the decision, after which the chief selector will consult the rest of the selection committee. What remains intriguing is that coach Gautam Gambhir had reportedly backed Sanju Samson for the captaincy, while the BCCI and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were not fully aligned with that view.

Iyer and Tilak Emerge as the Final Choice

The eventual consensus landed on Iyer as captain and Tilak as deputy, effectively sidelining both Samson and Patidar despite their compelling cases. Patidar’s Omission Remains the Biggest Talking Point

For Patidar especially, the silence speaks volumes. While India’s next T20I leadership group appears to be in place, the decision has sparked fresh debate over how leadership credentials are evaluated and whether IPL success alone is enough to influence national-team captaincy discussions.

Rajat Patidar’s captaincy record

Matches: 27

Won: 19

Lost: 8

Win Percentage: 70%

Patidar’s heroics helped Virat Kohli based RCB end their 17-year title drought.

Inside India’s divided T20I leadership hunt: Three camps, Three candidates, No clear answer

Inside India’s divided T20I leadership hunt: Three camps, Three candidates, No clear answer

India’s T20I captaincy transition is turning out to be anything but straightforward. What appeared to be a simple succession story has fractured into a three-way contest, with different factions within the BCCI and team management backing entirely different candidates. As per media reports different names have been floating aroud the captaincy change but Shreyas Iyer leads the race.

Ishan Kishan or Tilak Varma may be the deputy of appointed captain.

Suryakumar’s Batting Form Forces a Leadership Review

Suryakumar Yadav took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, securing the role ahead of Hardik Pandya who had long been considered the frontrunner. While his tactical management drew little criticism, a batting slump stretching nearly 18 months has steadily worn down the patience of selectors and team management alike, making a leadership change increasingly inevitable ahead of the upcoming Ireland and England tour beginning June 26.

Shreyas Iyer Emerges as the Leading Candidate

Shreyas Iyer enters this race with the strongest resume. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished captains in franchise cricket.

Gautam Gambhir Not Fully Convinced on Iyer

However, head coach Gautam Gambhir harbours reservations about endorsing him. The two share an uncomfortable history from their time together at KKR, where Iyer publicly expressed feeling undervalued despite delivering the championship. Gambhir’s opinion will be sought before any announcement, though sources indicate his reservations are unlikely to override the broader process.

Sanju Samson Has Strong Support From the Coach

Gambhir’s preferred candidate is Sanju Samson, whose T20 World Cup campaign this year was exceptional. Coming into the tournament midway, Samson scored 321 runs in five innings at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37, including three consecutive half-centuries in the knockout stages.

Selectors Have Concerns Over Long-Term Consistency

Despite those numbers, the selection committee is not fully convinced about Samson’s or Ishan Kishan’s ability to deliver sustained consistency over the long term. Tilak Varma Emerges as the Long-Term Option The third candidate is Tilak Varma, backed by a section of selectors who value his age and long-term potential across two upcoming T20 World Cup cycles.

India A Captaincy Seen as a Trial Run

“Tilak has been made captain for the A series in Sri Lanka to check out his captaincy credentials,” a BCCI source confirmed to a news agency.

Three Candidates, Three Camps, No Final Decision

With three candidates, three factions and no clear agreement, India’s next T20I captain remains genuinely undecided. The coming weeks could determine not only who leads India in Ireland and England but also who shapes the team’s future in the shortest format for years to come.

Why are these decisions taken now?

The captaincy decision carries added urgency as the BCCI prepares to announce squads for multiple upcoming assignments simultaneously. India are scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland and five against England as part of their tour beginning June 26, making it one of the most significant short-format series ahead of the next World Cup cycle. Alongside that, the BCCI must also finalise India’s squad for the Asian Games, where the country will field their strongest available side in defense of the gold medal they won in 2022. With selection meetings expected imminently, the board will need to settle the captaincy question sooner rather than later, as the same core group of players is likely to feature across all three assignments.

Suryakumar Yadav Removed as T20I Captain:

Tim David’s viral cigar video sparks debate after RCB’s IPL 2026 title win; Phil Salt’s photo adds twist – Here’s what we know

Tim David’s viral cigar video sparks debate after RCB’s IPL 2026 title win; Phil Salt’s photo adds twist – Here’s what we know

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has found himself at the centre of social media attention once again, this time due to a viral video that allegedly shows him smoking a cigar following the franchise’s IPL 2026 title-winning campaign.

The video, which began circulating widely on social media platforms on Wednesday, appears to show David holding and smoking what looks like a cigar while celebrating alongside teammates after RCB’s five-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

However, there is currently no verified confirmation that David was smoking a cigar, and neither the player nor RCB has issued an official statement regarding the clip.

Viral video divides social media

The clip quickly sparked debate online, with some users claiming the video was genuine while others questioned its authenticity and suggested it could have been digitally altered.

The video appears to show David standing among several RCB players during post-match celebrations. Fellow RCB star Romario Shepherd is seen nearby, while Rajasthan Royals youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can also be spotted in the background interacting with players.

Phil Salt’s social media post adds to speculation

Adding another layer to the story, several social media users pointed to an Instagram post shared by RCB opener Phil Salt after the team’s title triumph.

In the image, Salt and David are seen posing with the IPL trophy, while David appears to be holding what resembles a cigar. The photograph has since become a major talking point among fans discussing the viral video.

Despite the online speculation, the image itself does not confirm any wrongdoing, and no official clarification has been provided by the player or the franchise.

Tim David recently handed IPL suspension

The viral discussion comes just days after David was penalised for breaching IPL code of conduct during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans.

The Australian batter was fined 50 per cent of his match fee and handed two demerit points for a Level 1 offence. According to the IPL, David admitted to throwing an ice bag aggressively in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon during the match.

The offence increased David’s demerit points tally to five over a 36-month period, resulting in a one-match suspension. As a result, he is set to miss the opening game of IPL 2027, or the first match for whichever franchise he represents next season.

Important role in RCB’s title defence

Despite the disciplinary issues, David played an important role in RCB’s successful title defence. The hard-hitting batter scored 305 runs during IPL 2026 at an average of 33.88 and a strike rate of 188.27.

RCB’s victory over Gujarat Titans helped the franchise secure back-to-back IPL titles, making them only the third team in tournament history to achieve the feat after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Dinesh Karthik opens up on RCB’s IPL 2026 title defence, calls it an ‘Unbelievable feeling’

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting coach and mentor Dinesh Karthik described the franchise’s successful defence of their Indian Premier League (IPL) crown in the recent season as an ‘unbelievable feeling’, while crediting the players for their consistency and skill in making the side victorious.

At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, RCB defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets to defend the title they won at the same venue in 2025. “One thing the plan and another thing the boys have to have skill and deliver it on the given day, which they have done so consistently, and we’re so proud of the team.

“Absolutely ecstatic – we were dreaming something like this would happen, but when it does happen in reality, it hits you, and it’s definitely an unbelievable feeling,” said Karthik in a video posted by the IPL on its social media accounts on Wednesday.

RCB became only the third team in IPL history to defend their title after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI). The victory capped a season where senior players and emerging talents combined to deliver for the franchise under pressure.

“Really happy for all the fans – they’ve been with us through thick and thin, and I’m happy that we’re able to put smiles back on their faces. I think, for the whole journey, I’m not able to pinpoint one, because there have been different challenges from the start till the day we finished.

“I think as a backroom staff, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved. But all credit to the boys for the way they went out there day in and day out, put in their first and made it happen,” added Karthik.

He also expressed happiness for Rajat Patidar, who’s his birthday twin – both turned a year older on June 1. “It’s been as special as it can get – you don’t get it too many times when you win an IPL on your birthday. So extremely happy. Every year is going to be different, though we’ll give it everything we have for sure,” concluded Karthik.
