Virat Kohli creates history in IPL 2026 final; RCB star joins elite 200-sixes club after title triumph over GT

Virat Kohli once again proved why he remains one of the biggest match-winners in IPL history. The RCB superstar delivered on the grandest stage and achieved multiple milestones during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning triumph over Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) successfully defended their Indian Premier League (IPL) crown after defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. At the heart of the triumph was Kohli who produced another masterclass in a pressure game. The former RCB captain remained unbeaten on 75 off 42 deliveries and anchored the chase flawlessly as Bengaluru chased down the 156-run target with ease.

His match-winning knock earned him the Player of the Match award, making it the first IPL final Player of the Match award of his illustrious career.

Virat Kohli joins elite IPL six-hitting club

Apart from lifting his second consecutive IPL trophy with RCB, Kohli also added another major milestone to his remarkable resume.

The batting icon became only the fourth player in IPL history to smash 200 or more sixes as an opener. Earlier this season, KL Rahul had also reached the landmark.

Most sixes in IPL as an opener

1. Chris Gayle – 326

2. KL Rahul – 210

3. David Warner – 210

4. Virat Kohli – 202

5. Rohit Sharma – 161

Kohli surpasses Rohit Sharma in elite IPL record

The IPL 2026 final turned out to be a historic night for Kohli in more ways than one.

The Player of the Match award was the 22nd of his IPL career, helping him surpass Rohit Sharma’s tally of 21 awards. Kohli is now the Indian player with the most Player of the Match awards in IPL history.

He is currently level with Chris Gayle on 22 awards, while AB de Villiers remains at the top of the all-time list with 25 Player of the Match honours.

RCB dominate GT to retain IPL crown

Earlier, Gujarat Titans suffered a disastrous start after losing key batters Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler cheaply.

Washington Sundar stood tall amid the collapse with a fighting unbeaten half-century, but a lack of support from the other end prevented GT from posting a competitive total.

RCB’s bowling attack delivered a clinical performance, with Rasikh Salam Dar starring with three wickets. Experienced pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood chipped in with two wickets apiece to restrict Gujarat to 155.

In reply, Bengaluru remained in control throughout the chase. Kohli anchored the innings expertly and ensured there were no late hiccups as RCB completed another memorable title-winning campaign.

French Open 2026: India’s N. Sriram Balaji stuns sixth seeds to reach maiden Grand Slam Quarterfinal

Indian star N. Sriram Balaji and his Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner caused a major upset at the French Open, stunning sixth-seeded Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz to continue their impressive run into the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles section at the Stade Roland Garros on Monday.

The Indo-Brazilian pair came up with a composed performance to win their pre-quarterfinal match 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes in the clay court major, thus making their maiden quarterfinal entry in Grand Slams for both Balaji and Demoliner.

This is their third successive win in the tournament and underlined their growing confidence as a team. Their entry into the quarterfinals caps a strong week for Balaji and Demoliner, who had earlier registered a convincing second-round victory over Germany’s Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner, sealing a 7-5, 6-2 win in one hour and 27 minutes.

However, there were some setbacks for India in the men’s doubles competition as India’s Yuki Bhambri and New Zealand’s Michael Venus suffered a 3-6, 4-6 defeat to the experienced Italian combination of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the second round.

Bhambri and Venus had started their campaign strongly, defeating Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo and Mariano Kestelboim 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round. Bhambri, however, remains alive in the tournament after progressing in the mixed doubles alongside partner Alexandra Panova.

In the mixed doubles, Yuki Bhambri and Russia’s Alexandra Panova endured a tough defeat in the second round. The pair went down 1-6, 3-6 to last year’s semifinalists Neal Skupski (GB) and Desirae Krawczyk of the USA.

In the junior competition, Arnav Paparkar continued his successful run, advancing to the boys’ singles Round of 16 with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei. Paparkar will also compete in the boys’ doubles event, where he and Thailand’s Kunanan Pantaratorn will take on Great Britain’s Mark Ceban and Russia’s Kirill Filaretov.

RCB star Tim David fined 50 percent match fee, set to miss IPL 2027 season opener; Here’s why

RCB star Tim David fined 50 percent match fee, set to miss IPL 2027 season opener; Here’s why

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) big-hitting batter Tim David has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and will miss the opening game of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season after collecting two demerit points for a Level 1 Code of Conduct breach during the five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in the 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

David, who hit 24 off 17 balls in the final, was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match.”

The incident occurred in the 10th over of the first innings when, following the fall of a wicket, David threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of on‑field umpire Nitin Menon. The Match Referee, former India pacer Javagal Srinath, imposed the sanction after David admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment.

This was David’s third Level 1 offence of the season. He had earlier committed breaches in Match 20, for which he was docked one demerit point, and in Match 54, which resulted in two demerit points. With the latest sanction, David has now accumulated five demerit points in total.

As per the IPL’s Code of Conduct regulations, accumulation of five demerit points triggers a one‑match suspension. Accordingly, David, who made 305 runs in 16 games this season, will miss RCB’s opening fixture of the next IPL season or, if he represents another franchise in the first game of IPL 2027.

RCB defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final to secure their second consecutive title, but David’s suspension means the franchise will begin their title defence next year without one of their experienced finishers.

The win in Ahmedabad saw RCB become only the third team in IPL history to successfully defend their crown after Chennai Super Kings (2010-11) and Mumbai Indians (2019-20). Overall, RCB are now the fourth franchise with multiple titles, alongside MI and CSK, who have five each, and Kolkata Knight Riders, who have three wins.

Rajat Patidar added himself to the record books by becoming the first captain to win the IPL in each of his first two seasons. He is only the third skipper to secure back‑to‑back IPL triumphs after MS Dhoni (2010 and 2011) and Rohit Sharma (2019 and 2020).

Fastest fifties in IPL final history: Virat Kohli equals Rohit Sharma, Chris Gayle; check full list of batters

Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) icon, produced a batting masterclass in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final against Gujarat Titans and etched his name into history books after hitting the fastest half-century of his illustrious 19-season career.

Chasing a target of 156 against the Gujarat Titans at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 31, Kohli took the game by the scruff of its neck, hitting his fifty in just 25 balls. Breaking Personal Record At 37

For years, Virat Kohli’s fastest half-centuries in the tournament sat at 26 balls – both recorded way back in the 2018 season against Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. At 37 years of age, when critics often over-analyze strike rates and intent, ‘King Kohli’ silenced the noise by dismantling the Gujarat bowling attack on a pitch where other batters struggled to find their rhythm.

Partnering with Venkatesh Iyer at the top, Kohli helped rocket RCB to the fastest team fifty in IPL final history, crossing the 50-run mark in a mere 3.3 overs to shatter Chennai Super Kings’ previous record of 4 overs set in 2023. Kohli brought up his personal milestone in the 12th over with a authoritative pull shot in front of enthusiastic Ahmedabad crowd.

Where Kohli Stands: Fastest Fifties in IPL Finals

While Kohli’s 25-ball masterclass created personal history, it also secured his place on the mountaintop of the fastest individual fifties ever registered in an IPL final.  He moved into the joint-fourth position, sitting comfortably alongside Rohit Sharma’s 2015 demolition of CSK and Chris Gayle’s 2016 power-hitting storm against SRH.

Only Suresh Raina, David Warner, and Venkatesh Iyer have crossed the line quicker, doing so in 24 balls.

24 balls – Venkatesh Iyer (KKR) vs SRH, Chennai, 2024

25 balls – Rohit Sharma (MI) vs CSK, Kolkata, 2015

Kohli’s Milestone In Key Run Chase

The 25-ball fifty was not just Virat Kohli’s personal best but a statement in his 19th IPL season as it came during a crucial run chase in final. Kohli’s innings was not just about raw pace; it was a masterclass in game management. Following an explosive 62-run opening stand, RCB suffered a mini collapse as Gujarat’s bowlers clawed their way back into the contest.

With wickets tumbling around him, Kohli skillfully switched gears. He anchored the innings while maintaining a strike rate hovering at 200, finding the boundaries whenever the pressure began to mount. His majestic knock, packed with seven boundaries and two massive sixes, laid the bedrock for RCB to comfortably cross the finish line and retain their coveted IPL crown.
