‘Doesn’t look to have that sort of aura…’: Ricky Ponting gives bold take on Australia’s first round exit at T20 World Cup 2026

Former captain Ricky Ponting delivered a blunt assessment of Australia’s “really poor” campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 while also looking ahead to the next edition and potential squad composition.

Notably, Australia have won just one match from three games at the ongoing T20 World Cup. They are already out of contention to reach the Super Eights phase of the tournament regardless of what happens during their fixture against Oman on Friday.

During the latest episode of The ICC Review, Ponting spoke in depth about the Aussies’ poor T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

“It’s been a really poor campaign, it has to be said. They had some injury concerns at the start with (Josh) Hazlewood and (Pat) Cummins being ruled out and then Tim David not available right at the start as well. But I think just losing to Zimbabwe like they did, that’s going to be the game that they’re going to think back and think like that’s our World Cup gone, there and then,” Ponting said.

“I think looking at the pool before the start of the tournament, I felt Sri Lanka would be difficult to beat at home and that’s certainly the way it turned out. They played really well against Australia. That was an amazing run chase when you look at it. That sort of score is never an easy one to chase down. But to think that Zimbabwe outplayed Australia in an ICC event, it’s those opportunities that you can’t afford to give up in a tournament like this,” he added.

ICC Hall of Famer Ponting also lightheartedly shared he had been on the receiving end of some banter as a result of Australia’s imminent formal exit from the tournament.

“I’ve had a fair bit of ribbing, it has to be said, from a lot of Indian friends of mine over the last few days, but that’s part and parcel,” he said.

“You take the good with the bad and more often than not, I’ve been able to be the one that’s been able to send a cheeky message back and forth myself – but certainly not in this tournament!,” he added.

Lacked Of Aura In Australian Team

The 51-year-old Ponting also suggested that the current Australian line-up in the shortest format lacked some of the aura that previous teams that wore the famous green and gold.

“I think I said to you the other day that you look at that Australian team on paper, it just doesn’t look to have that sort of aura around it that a lot of other Australian teams have going into ICC events and World Cups.

You need to have your best players and your most experienced players standing up and winning big moments for you in these tournaments if you want to go ahead and win and Australia haven’t had that,” he said.

“They probably haven’t got enough out of their top order batting with Cameron Green at No.3, and then Tim David coming in at No.4 for the last couple of games. Those two haven’t fired and Australia have lost early wickets certainly in the game against Zimbabwe.

They went off to a great start the other night (against Sri Lanka) and then to lose six for 20, I think it was in the last four or five overs, taking no momentum at all into the second part of the game.

Once again, there’s just little areas that you have to win that Australia haven’t been able to win. As a past player and these WhatsApp groups that we’re on, we certainly don’t sit back and bash the current players or talk about them in a negative way when they don’t win. We just want to see our team do well. So, unfortunately, that hasn’t happened over the last couple of weeks. And that’s something that group of players has to live with,” he added.

ICC Trophies, A Pinnacle For Any Aspiring Cricketer

Ricky Ponting, the multiple World Cup winner, refuted any suggestion that Australian men’s teams don’t place enough emphasis on the T20 World Cup, adding that winning ICC trophies should be the pinnacle for any aspiring young Aussie cricketer.

“I’m not sure that that’s true. I think it’s probably hard for a lot of the players to get up immediately after an Ashes series. And let’s not forget, our guys just went through five really long Test matches and it’s physically and mentally draining for a couple of months. Some of the boys went back and played some BBL. The other guys decided to try and rest and freshen up and be ready for a World Cup,” said Ponting.

“But trust me, any Australian team that I’ve been in or been around, yes, the (home) international series is important, Border-Gavaskar (Trophy) is important, but the reason you play is to win World Cups and win titles. The fact that we had as many players out as we did and some of our best players just not stepping up is the reason that you don’t win.

“The teams that are left now, the teams that need to have their best players playing well at the back end of this tournament if they’re indeed going to go on and win this tournament as well,” he added.

Ponting On Future Of Australia’s T20 Team

Ponting was also asked about the future of Australia’s T20 team, with the country set to co-host the next installment of the T20 World Cup in 2028 alongside New Zealand as well as a possible appearance at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“I think Mitchell Marsh will probably hang on long enough for that and I think Travis Head will definitely be around and (Josh) Inglis will be around. Steve Smith has been very vocal about him wanting to be a part of an Olympic team as well. Whether or not that happens is a different story,” Ponting said.

“Cameron Green will be around if in fact his form is good enough to stay in the side. That’s another bit of a worry I think for Australia, certainly across Test match cricket and probably T20 cricket, what we saw in this World Cup.

“You would think Nathan Ellis would be around, Xavier Bartlett will be there. Cooper Connolly would be there and thereabouts.

“Glenn Maxwell, I don’t think will be there. I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end. Marcus Stoinis would also probably be a question mark, but he’s predominantly playing only T20 cricket tournaments around the world these days. Doesn’t play a lot of state cricket and obviously plays the BBL, so with his all round ability, he might be there.

“So there will be some change. Matthew Kuhnemann he’s young enough to still be around as well if they decide to have two spinners in their lineups. So there could be some changes, but I guess, I mean, we’re still, what are we, 18 months away from that, two years away from that happening. So let’s wait and see,” he concluded.

T20 World Cup 2026: Shivam Dube, Varun Chakravarthy help India beat Netherlands by 17 runs; continue winning run

T20 World Cup 2026: Shivam Dube, Varun Chakravarthy help India beat Netherlands by 17 runs; continue winning run

Varun Chakravarthy’s 3-14 and an all-round performance from Shivam Dube (66 & 2-35) helped India continue their winning run and extend it to 12 matches after beating the Netherlands by 17 runs in the 36th match of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Wednesday.

The Netherlands got off to a good start in the Group A clash, chasing 194 as openers Michael Levitt and Max O’ Dowd added 35 runs in the first five overs. India ended the steady 35-run opening partnership when Varun Chakaravarthy bowled a sharp delivery, hitting Max O’Dowd’s leg stump. The Netherlands’ top run-scorer in T20Is faced another tough game, finishing a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign with only 45 runs in four matches.

Hardik Pandya then acted quickly to give India another breakthrough as Michael Levitt (24) fell while trying an ambitious pull. Bowling a 132.2 kph short-of-a-length delivery outside off and rolling his fingers over the seam, Pandya forced a mistimed shot that soared towards deep mid-wicket. Washington Sundar read it well near the boundary, timed his jump perfectly, caught it above his head, and kept his balance inside the rope to make a great play.

Earlier, after electing to bat on a red-soil wicket, India lost out-of-form Abhishek Sharma early as he departed on his third consecutive duck of the tournament. Aryan Dutt struck twice early to shake India during the Power-play. He dismissed both Sharma and Ishan Kishan (18 off 17) with three excellent overs of off-spin with the new ball. Ishan showed promise with a few solid hits and added 39 runs with Tilak Varma (31) before he got bowled in an unfortunate dismissal.

Varma and skipper Suryakumar Yadav took control of the Indian innings and then added 30-odd runs. Varma, looking to go big over long-off, placed it beside 41-year-old Roelof van der Merwe, who attempted a full-stretched dive to complete the catch.

Skipper Surykumar then opened his hand with a signature style ‘Supla’ shot off de Leede in the 12th over, and then all-rounder Shivam Dube took charge of power-hitting in the very next over.

Colin Ackermann, bowling the 13th over, was taken down by Dube with two maximums on the leg side and a boundary, carving the covers as 19 runs came off the over.

Just when it seemed like the hosts were gaining momentum with Suryakumar and Dube launching a counterattack, the Netherlands responded fiercely with the wicket of the skipper, who departed on 34 off 28.

India changed their approach dramatically in the middle overs. They scored 15 runs off the 16th over and hit another 20 in the next. The decision to bowl spin did not work out. Van der Merwe couldn’t stop the attack, so Bas de Leede had to return to the bowling lineup as India raced past 150 in 17 overs.

Shivam Dube led the way, blasting both spin and pace on his way to an explosive half-century off just 25 balls, featuring two fours and five sixes. Fourteen runs came from the final over, with Rinku Singh making his mark by hitting a six on just his second ball. India finished with a commanding total of 193/6.

For the Netherlands, Logan van Beek 3-56 and Aryan Dutt 2-19 were the key bowlers.

Colin Ackermann and Bas de Leede were the main contributors for the Netherlands innings, adding 43 off 26 deliveries. First, they took down Pandya for 14 and then Abhishek Sharma for 10 runs—the only over he bowled. Carrying on with the momentum, both the batters capitalised on Shivam Dube’s first over for 12 runs after Ackerman was dropped by Washington Sundar.

Ackermann’s (23 off 15) quick cameo ended after he got out at deep mid-wicket. Rinku Singh made a secure catch, giving Varun Chakaravarthy his second wicket and ending the 43-run partnership. The Dutch soon faced more trouble as Chakaravarthy took another wicket, removing Aryan Dutt for a golden duck. Suddenly, on a hat-trick, the spinner was on fire, leaving the Netherlands in a tough spot.

Dube then struck back after getting smoked for a maximum and a boundary with a prized wicket of de Leede (33). The Netherlands were in trouble with the required rate rising with each ball as Bumrah, returning for his second spell, cleaned up skipper Scott Edwards.

The Netherlands showed some fightback in the end with Zach Lion-Cachet (26 off 16) and Noah Croes (25 off 12*), but the toll of runs was heavy as India continued their winning run and extended it to 12 unbeaten by beating the visitors by 17 runs.

Chakravarthy 3-14 and an all-round performance from Dube (66 & 2-35) were the key contributors in India’s win.

Brief scores: India 193/6 in 20 overs (Shivam Dube 66, Suryakumar Yadav 34; Logan van Beek 3-56, Aryan Dutt 2-19) beat Netherlands 176/7 in 20 overs (Bas de Leede 33, Noah Croes 25; Varun Chakravarthy 3-14, Shivam Dube 2-25) by 17 runs

Big blow to KKR ahead of IPL 2026 ! Matheesha Pathirana ruled out of T20 World Cup 2026 due to injury

Big blow to KKR ahead of IPL 2026 ! Matheesha Pathirana ruled out of T20 World Cup 2026 due to injury

In a massive setback for both the Sri Lankan cricket team and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), star speedster Matheesha Pathirana has been officially ruled out of the remainder of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The 23-year-old Sri Lankan fast bowler, who is known for his lethal “slingshot” action and was acquired by KKR for a hefty Rs 18 crore in the recent IPL auction, sustained a muscle strain in his left leg (described in reports as a calf strain) during Sri Lanka’s Group B match against Australia on February 16, 2026, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Pathirana collapsed clutching his left leg after delivering just four balls in his opening over and was unable to continue, limping off the field.

A World Cup Campaign Cut Short

Sri Lanka’s batting consultant Vikram Rathour confirmed that Pathirana had been declared unfit for the rest of the World Cup, dealing a heavy blow to the team’s bowling attack, especially in the death overs where Pathirana excels with his unique slingy action and yorker precision.

The ICC Technical Committee has already approved Dilshan Madushanka as Pathirana’s replacement in the Sri Lankan squad as they head into the Super 8 stage.

Sri Lanka take on Zimbabwe in their final group-stage game of the ongoing T20 World Cup on Thursday in Colombo.

KKR’s Rs 18 Crore Investment At Risk

The news has sent shockwaves through the Kolkata Knight Riders camp. KKR had recently broken the bank to secure Pathirana for a staggering Rs 18 crore in the IPL 2026 auction, eyeing him as the cornerstone of their bowling attack.

With the IPL 2026 season fast approaching, the Kolkata-based franchise now faces a nervous wait. Early medical reports suggest a recovery timeline of at least 3 to 4 weeks, which could see him miss the opening stages of the tournament.

Current Hurdles For KKR’s Pace Battery

Matheesha Pathirana: Sidelined with a calf strain; availability for the start of IPL 2026 is “doubtful.”

Harshit Rana: Currently recovering from a recent surgery, though expected to return mid-season.

Mustafizur Rahman: KKR have released Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for IPL 2026 after the BCCI “instructed” them to do so.

What’s Next For The KKR?

If Pathirana’s recovery extends beyond a month, KKR management may have to look at the injury replacement pool. For now, the “Baby Malinga” faces a race against time to be fit for the iconic purple and gold jersey.
