WPL 2026: Start Date, Venues Confirmed As Mumbai And Baroda Take Charge

The schedule and host cities for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 have effectively been confirmed, setting the stage for another exciting season of women’s franchise cricket in India. According to Sports Tak, the fourth edition of the WPL is slated to begin on January 8 or 9, with the tournament expected to be conducted across Mumbai and Baroda, the two cities chosen as hosts for the upcoming edition. One of the main venues for the tournament will be the iconic D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, a ground that recently witnessed a historic moment when the Indian women’s team defeated South Africa in the final of the ODI World Cup to lift the coveted trophy for the first time in history. The stadium is again set to play a central role in India’s premier women’s T20 league.

The second venue most likely to host matches is the Kotambi Stadium in Baroda, which has steadily grown in stature. Baroda will also stage the first ODI of the India–New Zealand women’s series on January 11, further strengthening its position as an important cricketing center heading into WPL 2026.

There have been indications that the WPL might unfold in two separate legs. An earlier report from Cricbuzz suggested that the initial phase of the league will take place in Navi Mumbai, followed by the second half in Baroda. The five franchises are expected to receive an official communication confirming the venues during the player auction scheduled for November 27 in New Delhi.

This year’s auction will witness 276 players going under the hammer, while the five teams collectively have 73 available slots. Major attention will be on the marquee names  Deepti Sharma, Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine, and Sophie Ecclestone  all of whom enter the auction with the highest base price bracket of INR 50 lakh.

When it comes to auction purses, UP Warriorz head into the event with the largest remaining budget of INR 14.50 crore, having retained only a single player. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru hold the smallest purses, standing at INR 5.75 crore each. WPL 2026 marks the fourth season of the league. Mumbai Indians clinched the title in the first and third editions, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted the trophy in the second season, creating a competitive narrative heading into the new campaign.

2026 WPL

The WPL 2026 auction saw several major moves as UP Warriorz secured Harleen Deol, Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield, Sophie Ecclestone and retained Deepti Sharma using RTM. RCB strengthened their squad by signing Radha Yadav, Nadine de Klerk and Georgia Voll, while Delhi Capitals added Sneh Rana, Sree Charani, Laura Wolvaardt and Chinelle Henry for big fees. Gujarat Giants retained Bharti Fulmali and picked Renuka Singh and Sophie Devine, while Mumbai Indians kept Amelia Kerr for INR 3 crore. Among surprises, Alyssa Healy went unsold in the first round. Deepti Sharma remained the highest buy at INR 3.2 crore.

Gautam Gambhir Hay Hay: Fans In Guwahati Join Twitter Rage, Boo India Coach After Humiliating SA Sweep – WATCH

Gautam Gambhir Hay Hay: Fans In Guwahati Join Twitter Rage, Boo India Coach After Humiliating SA Sweep – WATCH

Guwahati witnessed a tense and emotional evening as frustrated spectators openly vented their anger at India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir following the team’s crushing 408-run defeat to South Africa in the second Test. The loss not only sealed a two-nil series sweep but also marked India’s heaviest defeat in Test cricket. It was also South Africa’s first Test series win on Indian soil since the year 2000. The back-to-back home whitewashes, occurring within a span of just thirteen months, have significantly damaged India’s prospects of reaching the World Test Championship final for the 2025 to 2027 cycle.

Fans Chant ‘Gautam Gambhir Hay Hay’ at Barsapara Stadium

The atmosphere at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium turned hostile soon after the match ended. Angry supporters began chanting “Gautam Gambhir hay hay” in loud and repeated bursts. The chants were directed straight at the head coach as he stood on the field. Under Gambhir’s leadership, India have now suffered five home Test defeats against teams such as New Zealand and South Africa. This record became the fuel behind the spectators’ sharp reaction.

Police Step In Amid Stadium Chaos

A video from the stadium captured the incident clearly. Police personnel stationed at the venue stepped in after noticing the aggressive chanting. They approached the group of spectators and asked them to stop. Officers were seen talking to the fans at length while Gambhir remained on the ground, visibly stunned by the unexpected backlash.

Gautam Gambhir Accepts Full Responsibility

Despite the criticism, Gambhir accepted full responsibility for the team’s performance. He acknowledged that the squad is in the middle of a developmental period and emphasised that long term improvement will come through collective effort and patience.

“The blame lies at the feet of everyone starting with me. Start prioritising Test cricket. If we want Test cricket to flourish in India, we have to collectively do it. More than the accountability it is about the care. This is what a transition phase is and young players would learn on the job,” Gambhir said during the post-match press conference.

WTC Qualification Race Intensifies

South Africa’s dominant win has reshaped the World Test Championship race. Their victory pushes them significantly closer to a top two finish. Meanwhile, India have slipped to fifth place on the updated ICC table with a points percentage of 48.15. Pakistan now sit in fourth place with a fifty percent points percentage. Although India have accumulated the most points in the cycle, a lack of wins has put them under enormous pressure. With several tough fixtures ahead, India now face a monumental challenge to qualify for the 2027 WTC final.

Rishabh Pant’s Heartfelt Apology To Fans After India’s Crushing Test Series Loss To South Africa Says, Sorry We…

Rishabh Pant’s Heartfelt Apology To Fans After India’s Crushing Test Series Loss To South Africa Says, Sorry We…

India’s stand-in Test captain Rishabh Pant opened up to fans after India suffered a historic Test series defeat to South Africa at home. Reflecting on the back-to-back setbacks over the last two weeks, Pant expressed regret, took responsibility, and assured supporters that the team would bounce back stronger. Pant’s debut series as Test captain ended in a record-breaking 408-run loss in Guwahati. It was India’s heaviest defeat in the format and the first time in 25 years that South Africa claimed a Test series win on Indian soil.

Pant Apologises to Fans, Promises Strong Comeback

Sharing a heartfelt note on social media, Pant acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and thanked fans for standing by them.

“There is no shying away from the fact that we didn’t play good enough cricket over the last two weeks,” Pant wrote.

“As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to billions of Indians. Sorry we couldn’t live up to expectations this time, but sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow, both as a team and as individuals.”

He reiterated how much representing the country means to every player.

“Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of and we will work hard, regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger and better as a team and individuals.”

Pant ended the message with gratitude.

“Thank you four your unwavering support and love? Jai Hind. #RP17.”

India’s Worst Test Defeat by Runs

The second Test in Guwahati ended with India being bowled out for 201 and 140 in their two innings. South Africa posted 489 and 260 for five, securing a massive 408-run victory. This result sealed a two-nil whitewash and pushed India further down the World Test Championship standings.

Pant: South Africa Deserved the Win

Pant credited the visitors for outplaying India throughout the series and warned against complacency.

“They definitely played better cricket, but at the same time, in cricket you can’t take anything for granted,” Pant said during the post-match presentation. “You can play at home or away, but at the same time, cricket demands that determination and that extra.”

He pointed out that India failed to seize crucial passages of play.

“There are moments in the game where you need to capitalise [on] it as a team, as a batting unit. But as a team, we didn’t capitalise on those enough for a longer period of time, and that cost us the whole series.”

Pant registered scores of 27, 2, 7 and 13 in the two Tests.

What’s Next?

Pant will next feature in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30 in Ranchi, where India will look to start fresh after their difficult Test campaign.

Ashes 2nd Test: Big Pat Cummins Development Emerges Before Brisbane Clash

Ashes 2nd Test: Big Pat Cummins Development Emerges Before Brisbane Clash

Pat Cummins is set to be included in Australia’s squad for the second Ashes Test, providing another significant boost following their victory in Perth. Reports earlier indicated that it has not yet been confirmed if the team’s captain will play in the game at the Gabba starting December 4. However, The West Australian confirmed that Cummins will be named in the squad that will be announced on Friday.

No further players are anticipated to join Australia’s squad, leaving the team’s top-order uncertain following Usman Khawaja’s back problems and Travis Head’s impressive fourth-innings century in the first Test.

Initially, there were concerns that Cummins might miss the entire blockbuster series due to a bone stress flare-up in his back revealed in September. However, he has since been able to complete bowling sessions at full intensity, including high-intensity sessions at Perth before and after the Ashes opener.

On Thursday, Brendan Dodgett expressed uncertainty about his participation in the second Test, with Cummins recovering well and on schedule. However, he stated that he was mentally prepared to rise up to the occasion if needed in case Cummins was to miss out.

“Pat is looking pretty good in the nets now so we will see where that lands. I am going to control what I can control, keep ticking the legs over and keep bowling and trying to improve in every session and game. If I get called on in that second Test I feel like I am ready to go again,” Doggett was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Asked if he had heard anything from the selectors regarding the second Test, Doggett added, “We are soaking in the win and letting everyone get back to their families. We arrive in Brisbane on Sunday, so I assume conversations will start there about what the line-up looks like for the second Test.
