Sahibzada Farhan’s Blazing Half-Century, Nawaz’s Triple Strike Seal Pakistan’s Second Straight Tri-Series Win

Sahibzada Farhan’s Blazing Half-Century, Nawaz’s Triple Strike Seal Pakistan’s Second Straight Tri-Series Win

Sahibzada Farhan scored an unbeaten half-century after a clinical display by their bowlers, led by Mohammad Nawaz, who helped Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets for their second consecutive win in the Tri-nation T20I series here on Saturday. Sahibzada Farhan struck an unbeaten 80 off 45 balls to help Pakistan chase the target of 129 in 15.3 overs as the hosts rose to the top of the standings after their bowlers had earlier restricted Sri Lanka to 128/7 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium here.

Pakistan will now take on Zimbabwe at the same venue on Sunday in the fourth match of the series, which will secure their place in the final of the tournament.

In pursuit of the target, opening batters Farhan and Saim Ayub (20, 18b, 4×4) provided their team a blistering start, raising 47 runs for the opening wicket partnership in five overs before the latter departed, stumped by Kusal Mendis off skipper Dasun Shanaka. While scoring his 20, Saim became just the ninth Pakistan batter to cross the 1,000 T20I runs landmark during the outing.

Farhan then raised 69 runs for the second-wicket partnership with former skipper Babar Azam (16, 22b, 1×6) in which he contributed 53 runs, also bringing up his sixth T20I half-century off 33 balls.

With Dushmantha Chameera striking twice on consecutive balls, Sahibzada Farhan kept his charge going and ended by hitting the winning runs in style with a boundary in the 16th over. The right-handed opening batter struck six fours and five sixes, also becoming the first Pakistan batter to hit 100 or more sixes in T20Is in a year.

Earlier, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start with Kamil Mishara hitting two fours and as many sixes before departing in the fourth over with 32 runs on the board. Sri Lanka’s progress was further hampered in the subsequent when Mohammad Wasim Jnr’s brilliant throw from third run out Kusal Mendis.

Sri Lanka slumped to 65/3 at the halfway mark, and things turned from bad to worse as they slipped to 78/5 in the 12th over, when player of the match Mohammad Nawaz removed Kusal Perera (25, 19b, 2×4, 1×6) and Dasun Shanaka on consecutive deliveries. Nawaz returned to remove Kamindu Mendis in the 14th over as Sri Lanka slipped to 86/6.

Janith Liyanage, who top scored for Sri Lanka with 41 off 38 balls, hitting three fours and one six, then forged a 31-ball 35-run seventh-wicket stand with Wanindu Hasaranga (11, 12b, 1×4) as they took Sri Lanka to 128-7 in 20 overs.

While Nawaz starred with 3-16 in four overs, Faheem Ashraf, Salman Mirza, and Abrar Ahmed claimed one wicket each.

Brief scores:

Sri Lanka 128/7 in 20 overs (Janith Liyanage 41 not out, Kusal Perera 25, Kamil Mishara 22; Mohammad Nawaz 3-16) lost to Pakistan 131/3 in 15.3 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 80 not out, Saim Ayub 20; Dushmantha Chameera 2-29) by seven wickets

He Sort Of Gets Overspin And…: Ryan ten Doeschate Breaks Down Kuldeep Yadavs Skillset In Guwahati Test

He Sort Of Gets Overspin And…: Ryan ten Doeschate Breaks Down Kuldeep Yadavs Skillset In Guwahati Test

The ongoing second Test in Guwahati is a must-win match for India to avoid a home series loss against the current World Test Champions South Africa. On the other hand, South Africa already have one hand on the trophy after winning the first Test in Kolkata and their focus is on securing their first Test series victory on Indian soil in 25 years.

The first ever Test match in Guwahati began on Saturday with both teams refusing to loosen their grip on the ICC World Test Championship contest.

With South Africa putting up 247 runs on the board at the end of day one, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate isn’t worried about the eventual first-innings target they may have to chase. Instead, he is focused on delivering the best possible bowling effort on Day 2 to wrap up South Africa’s lower order.

“I don’t want to put a number on the score. I think it’s really important that we come out and put our best foot forward, our best bowling foot forward tomorrow morning,” said Ryan in the press conference.

“Every run is going to be important. Getting Tony De Zorzi’s wicket towards the end of the day is massive. It’s a big difference coming in tomorrow and needing four wickets compared to five,” he added.

Ten Doeschate Lauds Kuldeep Yadav’s Skillset

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for India, snapping three out of the six wickets that fell on Day 1. Kuldeep was crucial in providing crucial breakthroughs which included the wickets of a well-set Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs.

“Three wickets on that surface on day one. We know Kuldeep’s strike rate is phenomenal as it is. He’s a wicket taker and that’s why we’re picking him,” said Ryan.

“I thought everyone bowled well. But maybe the fact that he sort of gets overspin and with the red soil and a little bit more pace in the wicket, maybe he was slightly more effective in the conditions today.

I think later on the finger spinners are going to come into it. But certainly in terms of strategy and how we wanted to set up the first day, it’s a real bonus for him to pick up three wickets and get us a foothold in the game,” he added.

The Proteas batters will rue their missed chances after failing to convert their starts into big scores. Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram provided a solid foundation for South Africa but both openers fell in their 30s. Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma also looked well set as they pushed towards substantial totals, yet they both got out on 49 and 41 respectively.

The Indian bowlers held their discipline throughout the day, ensuring none of the South African batters went on to play a big knock.

“I thought the one thing we did really well is make sure that none of them got a big score. And that’s one point of difference we can have in the second innings. I guess on the flip side of that, they all got in,” said India’s assistant coach.

“I think we kept pressure on for long periods of time. And like I alluded to earlier, when scoring is not that easy, when you can only really score off bad balls, it sort of adds pressure onto the batting units. And maybe that’s the reason for guys getting in and no one getting a big score yet,” he added.

India Need To Maximise WTC Points In Home Conditions

India currently sit fourth on the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 table with a points percentage of 54.17.

With away tours to Sri Lanka and New Zealand still to come in this cycle, Ryan ten Doeschate believes it is crucial for India to maximise points in home conditions if they are to push for a place in the final.

“Look, I think in the World Test Championship, you have to get a high percentage of your points at home,” said Ryan.

“Some of the tours you go on are really tough to pick up more than 50% of the points. We know it’s going to be around about 60% to qualify for that final. If you do the math, your home series are really important,”  he added.

Its Knocked The Wind Out Of Us…: Ben Stokes Hails Travis Head’s Knock After Englands Crushing Defeat In Perth

Its Knocked The Wind Out Of Us…: Ben Stokes Hails Travis Head’s Knock After Englands Crushing Defeat In Perth

England captain Ben Stokes admitted that he was taken aback after his side’s eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the Perth Test, where Travis Head’s blistering innings in the fourth innings on day two completely blew the visitors away.

Head, who opened the batting for Australia in their second innings, smashed 123 off 83 deliveries to make a mockery of the target of 205 set by England and ease the hosts into a 1-0 lead in the series.

The England skipper was left with nothing but acknowledgement for his opponent, who completely took the game away from his side.

“We’re a little bit shellshocked there. That innings from Travis Head was pretty phenomenal. That was some knock. It’s knocked the wind out of us,” Stokes said at the post-match presentation.

“We tried three or four different plans at him. When he was going like a train, those plans could change quite quickly, because those runs were coming down quickly. I’ve seen Travis play a lot of knocks like that, whether it be in Test cricket or white-ball cricket. He’s very hard to stop,” he added.

Stokes also noted that the batters from both sides who proactively attacked the bowlers were the ones who found success on an otherwise lively Perth surface.

“If you look at the way the game eked out, the guys who seemed to have success out there with bat in hand were the guys who were really brave and took the game on. Anyone who tried to stay around there and try and occupy the crease didn’t really seem to have too much success,” he said.

“On wickets like this, you never think you’ve got enough, so if you find yourself in a position where you’re the guy who’s managed to get in, try and give yourself the best chance of going on. There was a lot of assistance there when the bowlers put the ball in the right areas. The guys who were brave enough to knock the bowlers off their lengths seem to find success on that,” he added.

Some Positive For England In Perth Test

The England captain Ben Stokes admitted that the defeat in Perth was difficult to take but felt his team could head to Brisbane with some positives from the game.

“The way in which we bowled yesterday was simply phenomenal. This is a very tough one to get the series going when we felt we were in control of the game, and we were coming out there to bowl in that fourth innings. We’ve got four more games here,” said Stokes.

“We’ll obviously let this sink in. Obviously it hurts extremely, but we got to get our heads round and move on to Brisbane, and then hit the ground running there,” he added.

Stokes-led England will look to bounce back in the second Test in Brisbane, starting from December 4.
