IND vs SA, 1st Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal Registers Unwanted Record In Indias Crushing Loss Against South Africa

Ahead of the opening Test against South Africa, young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had a fantastic record in red-ball cricket at home. However, his incredible home run came to an end during the first Test in Kolkata.

After scoring 12 runs in the first innings, Jaiswal also failed to deliver in the second innings as he was dismissed for a four-ball duck in the run chase on Day 3 of the first Test against South Africa on Sunday.  It was a rare failure for Jaiswal on home soil, as he had never been dismissed for a duck in a home Test before. Previously, his lowest total in a Test innings was 13, recorded against England at Lord’s.

Meanwhile, it was also the first time in ten years that India’s openers contributed just a single run, with Rahul falling shortly after as well, leaving India 1 for 2 while chasing 124.

South Africa Beat India By 30 Runs In 1st Test, Take 1-0 Series Lead

Despite being bowled out for 159 on day one after choosing to bat first, World Test Championship winners South Africa executed a remarkable comeback to defeat India by 30 runs in the first Test at Eden Gardens on Sunday. Chasing a modest target of 124, South Africa dismissed India for only 93 in 35 overs on Day 3.

The 30-run victory also marked South Africa’s first Test win in India after 15 years, as the visitors now hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer starred with figures of 4-21, while the rest of the attack combined to dismantle India’s batting order on a challenging pitch, where anything above 100 to chase was always going to be a tough ask.

In the chase of 124, India sorely missed Shubman Gill, who was ruled out due to neck surgery and needed hospitalisation. After skipper Temba Bavuma’s fighting 55 not out, and his handy 44-run stand with Corbin Bosch, South Africa’s lead was extended to 123.

Harmer’s excellent bowling, along with key wickets from Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, and Keshav Maharaj, helped the Proteas stun India and leave the crowd silent.

Aakash Chopra Backs Cameron Green To Replace Andre Russell At KKR In IPL 2026

Aakash Chopra Backs Cameron Green To Replace Andre Russell At KKR In IPL 2026

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should target Australian all-rounder Cameron Green in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction, adding that he could prove to be an “upgraded version” of Andre Russell, with whom the franchise parted ways ahead of the new season.

In one of the boldest moves in the history of the IPL, three-time champions KKR parted ways with their premier all-rounder Andre Russell, ending an association of over a decade between these two entities, that had earned Russell immense popularity in India and KKR two IPL trophies.

Russell, who won the IPL MVP award in 2015 and 2019 with the Purple and Gold, had been a central figure for KKR since joining the franchise in 2014. He was one of five players retained ahead of the 2025 mega auction for Rs 12 crore. But without him now, KKR enters the auction with a massive purse of Rs 64.3 crores, and they also have the option of regaining him at a much lower price.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said about Green, “I think one must make an edit of Cameron Green in purple and publish it already. KKR need Cameron Green. They will control the auction now because they have a lot of money. The bowling will not get impacted by (Spencer) Johnson, (Anrich) Nortje, or Russell going away. You have four overs each from Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine. Green would also give you three or four overs. They could also buy more overseas bowlers. Maybe Green could come in as an upgraded version of Russell,” he said on his YouTube channel.

As a part of KKR from 2014-25, Russell scored 2,593 runs in 133 matches and 111 innings at an average of 28.81 and a strike rate of over 175, with 12 fifties and a best score of 88* and also picked up 122 wickets at an average of 21.59, with a five-wicket haul and three four-fers to his name.

However, Green had a brilliant debut season with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2023, scoring 452 runs in 16 innings at an average of 50.22, with a strike rate of 160.28, including a century and two fifties and also picked up six wickets. Green was brought by MI for Rs 17.5 crores ahead of the 2023 season.

Later, RCB acquired him from MI in an all-cash deal ahead of the 2024 season, where he played a crucial role in their inspirational run to the playoffs, which saw them overcome a horror start to the tournament with just a win in the first eight matches, scoring 255 runs at an average of 31.38 with a strike rate of over 143 and taking 10 wickets at an average of 30.30 in 13 matches.

Green has been great in T20Is this year, with 258 runs in eight innings at an average of 43.00 and a strike rate of above 168, with three fifties and a best score of 56*. Notably, he has also started bowling ahead of the Ashes series against England at home, delivering a scorching spell for Western Australia on his return, hitting 135-140 clicks consistently.

Among other overseas names released are Moeen Ali, Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Spencer Johnson. KKR have also made another big call by releasing Venkatesh Iyer, which, while significant, does not come as a complete surprise given his recent form.

The retained players of the three-time champions have a core group of players, which includes a blend of exciting young talent and experienced campaigners such as Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

Reaffirming the team’s philosophy of building a cohesive squad by combining promising young players with established international stars, KKR’s retentions highlight the franchise’s continued commitment to nurturing talent while maintaining a strong competitive edge for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, here is the list of retained players for KKR for the upcoming season:

Retained Players: Ajinkya Rahane, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Anukul Roy, Harshit Rana, Manish Pandey, Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, Umran Malik, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakaravarthy

Available Slots: 13 (including 6 Overseas slots)

Eventually Succumbed To The Pressure: Anil Kumbles Blunt Assessment Of Indias Crushing Defeat Against South Africa In Kolkata Test

Eventually Succumbed To The Pressure: Anil Kumbles Blunt Assessment Of Indias Crushing Defeat Against South Africa In Kolkata Test

Following their 30-run defeat to South Africa inside three days at the Eden Gardens, former India captain Anil Kumble felt the hosts missed an opportunity of scoring more runs in the first innings, adding that they looked rattled by the challenging pitch and conditions on offer.

After bowling out South Africa for 159, India made 189 in their first innings and took a slender 30-run lead. Opener KL Rahul was the only batter from India to cross the 30-run mark.

From 153/4, India lost their last five wickets for just 36 runs to be dismissed for 189. But on day three, in a chase of 124, India didn’t have any answers to the questions posed by South Africa’s bowlers and were bundled out for 93 in 35 overs.

“I think the conditions were certainly something that the South Africans used to their advantage. India didn’t quite come up trumps once again on a surface that assisted both spin and fast bowling. There was a lot of up-and-down movement on that wicket, and it wasn’t easy to bat on. South Africa did really well. After bowling India out for 159 in the first innings, I thought India should have certainly scored more.”

“But the handicap of the skipper not being able to bat in both innings certainly hampered India. With one batter short on a wicket that was aiding the bowlers, it was never going to be easy. I felt South Africa batted brilliantly, led by their skipper, and he was well supported by the bowlers. India, I thought, were a bit too overawed by the pitch and conditions.”

“That took precedence over simply watching the ball and playing. I know it wasn’t easy, but Washington Sundar showed that you could hang around, and Axar Patel also showed there were runs available. Temba Bavuma showed that you can apply yourself. It was just a matter of application and India eventually succumbed to the pressure,” said Kumble on JioStar.

He also hailed Temba Bavuma’s leadership for helping South Africa defend 123 with aplomb, while questioning India’s tactics on start of day three. “A target of 123 was a bit too much. When the day started, South Africa were 63 for 7 – and that was the lead. Temba Bavuma was still there. But having spread-out fields and not giving the first over to your best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, was questionable. All three wickets that fell were to the fast bowlers.

“Overall, India were certainly outdone by South Africa. Credit to Temba Bavuma – he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves as a captain. He has won 10 out of 11 Test matches as skipper for South Africa and has won a Test Championship for them. He doesn’t get the kind of credit other international captains receive.

“As a batter, too, he has produced two quality innings, one in the WTC final and one here, literally back-to-back since he wasn’t available for Pakistan. He has done exceptionally well both as a player and a skipper.”

South Africa’s win has also given them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and marked their first Test victory in India after 15 years. Kumble also lauded Bavuma’s tactical acumen in using Aiden Markram’s off-spin to dismiss a well-set Washington Sundar.

“I thought he did really well in bringing on Aiden Markram when there were two left-handers at the crease. Washington Sundar had a good look at Simon Harmer and seemed comfortable. And maybe that one over from Keshav Maharaj, I felt that was where he got the wrong bowler on, because Axar was certainly taking him on.

“But he took a gamble that ultimately paid off. It cost South Africa 16 runs, but it paid off. Overall, I thought his usage of bowlers was excellent. He never used Wiaan Mulder at all in the innings. He ensured that the tall Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, and the two spinners along with the smart use of Markram were enough,” he added.
