WPL 2026 Retention List To Be Revealed On Thursday After 4th India vs Australia T20I

WPL 2026 Retention List To Be Revealed On Thursday After 4th India vs Australia T20I

The player retention list for the 2026 edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set to be released on Thursday, shortly after the conclusion of the fourth T20I between India and Australia in Gold Coast, Queensland.

IANS understands that all five franchises have submitted their final retained players’ list on the deadline day slated for Wednesday, with several high-profile names expected to feature in the retained pool and many of them going into the mega auction, to be held in New Delhi on November 27.

“Once the men’s T20I game is over, the WPL retention will be known officially,” said a source aware of the development.

Each franchise will be allowed to retain a maximum of three capped Indian players, two overseas players, and two uncapped Indian players. If a team chooses to retain five players, at least one must be an uncapped Indian player. The auction purse has been set at INR 15 crore.

Retention slabs have been defined as follows: INR 3.5 crore for Player 1, INR 2.5 crore for Player 2, INR 1.75 crore for Player 3, INR 1 crore for Player 4, and INR 50 lakh for Player 5. The Right to Match (RTM) option will enable franchises to buy back players who were part of their 2025 WPL squads, with a cap of five RTMs per team.

Depending on the number of retained players, the corresponding deductions from the purse will be: INR 9.25 crore for five players, INR 8.75 crore for four, INR 7.75 crore for three, INR 6 crore for two, and INR 3.5 crore for one.

The number of RTMs available will vary accordingly – franchises retaining fewer players will have more RTMs at their disposal. Teams using all five retentions will forfeit the RTM option entirely.

IANS understands that recent ODI World Cup winners Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, and Niki Prasad, India’s captain in winning the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, could be retained alongside overseas all-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland. It also means that multiple times World Cup winning Australian skipper Meg Lanning is on her way to enter the mega auction.

While Gujarat Giants are set to retain the Australia duo of Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney, UP Warriorz may only retain Shweta Sehrawat, the leading run-getter in 2023 U19 Women’s T20 World Cup winning campaign for India.

This agency understands that Deepti Sharma, who recently picked the Player of the Tournament award in ODI World Cup, is on her way to the auction after refusing to continue in UP Warriorz, a side she led in WPL 2025 in the absence of current Australia captain Alyssa Healy.

Current champions Mumbai Indians are likely to retain Harmanpreet Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and G Kamalini. It will be interesting to see if either of Hayley Matthews or Amelia Kerr is the other overseas retained player.

2024 winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru are likely to retain ODI World Cup winners Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh alongside fellow India team-mate Shreyanka Patil, while Australia’s star all-rounder Ellyse Perry might be their lone overseas retention.

Rovman Powell Scripts History, Becomes 2nd West Indies Batter To Achieve THIS Massive Milestone

Rovman Powell Scripts History, Becomes 2nd West Indies Batter To Achieve THIS Massive Milestone

West Indies batter Rovman Powell became just the second player from his team to reach 2,000 T20I runs on Wednesday. Powell achieved this milestone during the Windies’ first T20I against New Zealand at Auckland on Wednesday. During the match, he played a valuable cameo of 33 in 23 balls, with a four and two sixes at 143.47.

Now in 103 T20Is, he has scored 2,010 runs at an average of 26.10 and a strike rate of almost 141, with a century and nine fifties and his best score being 107.

At the top is a now-retired Nicholas Pooran, with 2,275 runs in 106 matches at an average of 26.14, with a strike rate of 136.39, including 13 fifties in 97 innings and a best score of 98.

Coming to the match, NZ put WI to bat first after winning the toss and opting to field first and were struggling at 43/3, when skipper Shai Hope (53 in 39 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Roston Chase (28 in 27 balls, with a four and a six) formed a 54-run stand to offer some stability.

Another 49-run stand for the fifth wicket between Chase and Powell followed, taking WI to 164/6 in 20 overs.

Jacob Duffy (2/19) and Zak Foulkes (2/35) were top wicket-takers for Kiwis, while James Neesham and Kyle Jamieson picked up one each.

During the run-chase, the WI bowling unit unleashed destruction on the Kiwis, particularly Jayden Seales (3/32) and Chase (3/26), not leaving NZ anywhere near them at 107/9. Skipper Mitchell Santner (55 in 28 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) delivered a late-blitz, but NZ was restricted to 157/9 and fell short by seven runs.

Chase got the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

What CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan Said?

With only 10 days remaining for franchises to submit their list of released players, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has provided an update on the former India captain’s IPL future.

Needless to say, if Dhoni chooses to retire, he will be included in the released players list, allowing the franchise to free up salary cap space and bolster their auction purse.

In a candid interaction captured in a video by Provoke Lifestyle, shared on Instagram, the CSK CEO was approached by children asking about MS Dhoni’s IPL future.

‘Would Dhoni Retire?’, the CSK CEO was asked by a kid. In reply, the CSK official said, ‘No he is not retiring for this IPL’.

When pressed on exactly when Dhoni might hang up his boots, Viswanathan humorously replied, “I will ask him and get back to you.”

Background And MS Dhoni’s Legacy With CSK

MS Dhoni’s legacy with the Chennai Super Kings is one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in franchise cricket history. He is often called the “soul” of the franchise and affectionately known as ‘Thala’ (meaning ‘leader’ in Tamil) by the fans.

Dhoni, retained as an uncapped player for IPL 2025 under new IPL rules, remains the most-capped IPL player with over 250 matches. He’s led CSK to five titles and is synonymous with the franchise’s ethos.

His role has evolved since his international retirement in 2020 – he’s often batted lower down the order in IPL, contributing cameos like his explosive finishes.

End Of An Era? Virat Kohli’s RCB Set For Major Ownership Change; May Get New Name & Complete Overhaul

End Of An Era? Virat Kohli’s RCB Set For Major Ownership Change; May Get New Name & Complete Overhaul

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, associated closely with superstar Virat Kohli, is headed for a major ownership shake-up. As reported by Cricbuzz, global beverage corporation Diageo has confirmed that it has begun the formal process to evaluate a sale of the franchise. The disclosure was made on November 5 in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Diageo controls Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of its Indian arm United Spirits Ltd. The company has officially initiated what it calls a “Strategic Review of the Investment in Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd (RCSPL).” RCSPL is responsible for managing both the men’s Indian Premier League (IPL) and women’s Women’s Premier League (WPL) teams under the RCB banner.

The ongoing review is expected to reach its conclusion by March 31, 2026. This means RCB’s ownership could potentially change hands before the start of IPL 2026. This move marks a significant moment for the IPL, one of the most valuable sporting leagues globally. Franchises in the IPL have evolved into high-profile sporting brands that attract widespread fan engagement, media coverage, and corporate attention. Accordingly, stakes in popular teams like RCB are seen as premium “trophy assets.” Any sale involving RCB is likely to play a major role in determining the next benchmark for IPL franchise valuations.

Why Did They Took This Decision?

Diageo’s decision ties into its long-term business priorities. The company has clarified that the RCB franchise, although valuable, is ultimately a non-core part of its main alcoholic beverage business. Praveen Someshwar, CEO of United Spirits, stated in the filing that while Royal Challengers Sports has been a “valuable and strategic asset,” the company is now focusing more directly on expanding and strengthening its core alcobev portfolio. This aligns with Diageo’s global direction of sharpening focus and building sustained value within its primary business.

Market discussions around the RCB valuation have already been active. Earlier reports, including one by Bloomberg News, suggested that Diageo has been seeking a valuation of up to $2 billion for its stake in the franchise. Interest in the sale has quickly gathered attention from several high-profile business figures. Among them is Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India, who described RCB as a “great team” provided the valuation is right.

This transition comes at a time when India’s regulatory environment surrounding alcohol branding and sports sponsorship is facing increased scrutiny. The Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to restrict surrogate advertising through major sporting properties, which directly affects visibility strategies for a company like Diageo. Refining their sports asset portfolio appears to be part of adapting to this landscape.

The RCB franchise has experienced ownership changes in the past. It was originally among the founding IPL teams and was initially owned by Vijay Mallya. Diageo took control of the franchise after acquiring his United Spirits business following challenges surrounding Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines in 2012.

With the franchise widely recognized for its massive and passionate fan base, the potential sale marks the beginning of an important new chapter in the RCB story.
