iPhone users in India can start using 5G services starting next week

In a major relief, 5G-enabled Apple iPhone users will be able to try out the services wherever available publicly in the country from next week, both on stand-alone (Reliance Jio) or non-stand-alone networks (Bharti Airtel).

Airtel and Jio customers who download the iOS 16 Beta software update can try out the service and send feedback to the company as part of its “Apple Beta Software Program”. The final updated software will be available sometime in December.

The Apple Beta Software Program lets users try out pre-release software and experience the latest features before the software becomes publicly available. Users can also provide feedback to Apple on quality and usability, which helps Apple identify issues, fix them, and make Apple software even better.

made the commitment at a meeting of key mobile device makers called by the DoT on Wednesday to discuss the progress of the 5G rollout in the country.

All the other mobile device makers have also committed that their respective 5G phones would be enabled to receive 5G by the middle of November (which includes some with beta software) both on stand-alone and non-stand-alone networks.

This is much earlier than their initial plan to enable all phones by December. Over 160 models of 5G handsets are available in the country, and more than 70-80 million 5G handset users.

The device makers also raised concerns that the operators are rolling out the network very slowly, which could lead to numerous complaints from customers using the service.

Apple shared details of its beta software program. Users with 5G-enabled iPhones can become part of the Apple Beta Software Program by enrolling their devices on the Apple website and accessing the latest beta release and subsequent updates. This includes the software update, which will be available to Airtel and Jio customers from next week.

In an official statement in October, shared a timeline and said, “We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December.”

Handset makers, however, remain concerned about the slow pace of the 5G rollout. The minister of communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw, had tried to address this issue in October when he urged telcos to increase the pace of the 5G rollout in the country. He said that telcos need to raise the number of 5G towers installed weekly to at least 10,000 per week, up from the current 2,500 per week.

However, operators and vendors have a different story to tell. “With very stiff safety measures and also a lot of specialised labour going home during the festivities, the movement has been slow. Also, 5G radios whose orders have been made recently will take time to be imported, so there is going to be an initial challenge,” said one of the vendors involved in the process:

Operators say that it is unfair to push them to a number as they would be rolling out according to their plan, and they have agreed to rollout commitments of 5G in any case.

“One will see a push from January, which will become even faster by June-July and by October, one can see a substantial amount of 5G coverage in the country,” said a senior executive at a telco.

Mastodon social network sees user influx amid Twitter turbulence: Report

Mastodon social network sees user influx amid Twitter turbulence: Report

acquiring has caused a turbulence on the platform. The takeover has prompted many users to look for Twitter’s alternative. One of those is Mastodon, which shares similarities with the microblogging platform and gained over 70,000 new sign-ups on October 28, a day after the takeover completed – according to a news report in TechCrunch.

Started in 2016, Mastodon is a decentralised, open source and distributed . It consists of independent user-managed servers, each with its own theme, rules, language and policies on content moderation, code of conduct, terms of service and privacy etc. Users can select which server they want to be part of based on the policies. For instance, the most popular server is mastodon.social, with 817,219 users, and a Japanese server pawoo.net with 766,399 users.

Users on one server can connect with users on other servers. Like Twitter, users can follow other users and create posts that can be liked and retweeted, use hashtags, share media and more. Instead of tweets, however, Mastodon have “toots” with character limit of 500. While tweeting, it gives you three options – public, private, and direct.

The flagship server of the service is Mastodon.social, which is run by Mastodon gGmbH, a crowdfunded organisation. In most of the cases it allows you to communicate with people from other servers, unless the server is filtered, limited or suspended by the server that you are part of. The action could be taken for reasons like spreading misinformation, conspiracy theories and hate speech.

Mastodon works on the web or mobile, including native mobile apps. It also works on third-party apps like Tootle, Mast, tooot, Twidere X, Mercury for Mastodon, Tootter for Mastodon and more.

As more people flee Twitter, the official Mastodon mobile app saw a record number of downloads this weekend.

“Looks like #Mastodon is trending on as more and more people are announcing their new profiles. Welcome to the better that does not belong to a single company and cannot be sold, welcome to the fediverse!” tweeted Mastodon.

Twitter discontinues ad-free articles for premium Blue subscribers

Twitter discontinues ad-free articles for premium Blue subscribers

has announced to discontinue ad-free articles for its premium Blue subscribers under as new CEO.

The micro-blogging platform said that it made the decision “to discontinue Ad-free Articles, effective as of close of business, on October 31, 2022”.

included ad-free articles when it rolled out its Blue subscription last year for $4.99.

A portion of the revenue from Blue subscription fees went directly to publishers within their network.

The feature was based on the platform Twitter acquired from Scroll, a service that specialised in removing ads from news sites.

“We will stop displaying the ‘Twitter Blue Publisher’ label on any tweets containing your articles. We will no longer be sending a Twitter Blue token when people on Twitter access articles from your properties,” the micro-blogging platform said in an email sent to publishers.

“This will prevent the ad-free experience on your site from loading. There is no change required from your end, but feel free to remove any Twitter Blue code from your site,” said the company.

The features let Blue users view ad-free articles on participating websites.

“This is just the beginning for Ad-free Articles with much more ad-free content to come as we continue to build more partnerships, with more publishers, in more markets,” the company had said in November last year.

“Our goal is to help each publishing partner make 50 per cent more per person than they would have made from serving ads to that person,” it added.

Apple iPhone: 5G software update arriving next week, but not for everyone

Apple iPhone: 5G software update arriving next week, but not for everyone

As India enters the 5G era, Apple will enable 5G in the iOS 16 Beta software programme next week for the select iPhone users in the country, the tech giant confirmed on Wednesday.

Apple Airtel and Jio customers who participate in iOS 16 Beta software programme will be able to try out 5G before it’s publicly available in December, according to Apple.

The Beta programme lets users try out pre-release software and experience the latest features before the software becomes publicly available.

Last month, Apple said it was working with its “carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed”.

“5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” the company had said in a statement.

With the beta programme, users can also provide feedback to Apple on quality and usability, which helps Apple identify issues, fix them, and make Apple software even better.

A user has to enrol iPhone in the Apple Beta Software Programme to access the latest public betas, as well as subsequent updates, including the 5G beta which will be available to Airtel and Jio customers from next week.

As India rolls out 5G in a phased manner starting with key metro cities, smartphone players are working towards making 5G available on their devices.

Those using iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and iPhone SE (third generation) models will get an upcoming software update on 5G.

Apple performs extensive testing with carrier partners to ensure a great experience for iPhone users.

iPhone offers users super-fast downloads and uploads, better streaming, and real-time connectivity with 5G to help them stay in touch, share, and enjoy the content.

The support for 5G on iPhone has now extended to over 250 carrier partners in over 70 markets around the world, with expanded support for standalone networks.

Prioritising software upgrades would enable the early adoption of 5G in India.
