Cuckoo J1510FW review: Semi-smart air purifier with 3-stage filtration, UV

Cuckoo J1510FW review: Semi-smart air purifier with 3-stage filtration, UV

India’s direct selling company Modicare, in collaboration with Korean appliance maker Cuckoo, recently launched in the country its maiden air purifier. Called the Cuckoo (J1510FW) Air Purifier, the device boasts lightweight design, three-stage air filtration system supported by ultraviolet LEDs, and touch controls. On paper, it seems to be a value-for-money proposition at Rs 18,999. Is it? Let’s find out:

Design

The Cuckoo Air Purifier has a compact form factor and lightweight design. It has a cylindrical body with slanted-flat top side, rounded frame with holes on the circumference, and rubber-fitted bottom.

The top side has a backlit touch control panel at the centre flanked by air vents on the bezels. The backlit is dynamic and changes between blue, yellow and red depending on the air quality — blue for air quality within permissible limits, yellow for borderline clean air quality, and red for poor air quality. The lights on the panel can be turned off, but not completely. The LEDs for power and fan mode stays on, causing distractions and discomfort especially at night hours. Nevertheless, there is a handle available on the top side that makes it easy and convenient to move the device.

Coming to the side, there are holes on the front and back that are appropriately sized to stop elements such as pets hair, broom threads, etc. but do not get in way for the air to pass. Therefore, the frame doubles up as a pre-filter and extends life of the main filter. Speaking of the main filter, it goes inside the frame from behind and is protected by a removable cover.

Performance

The Cuckoo J1510FW is a semi-smart air purifier. It lacks internet connectivity, therefore, misses smart features. But it is smart in terms of functions. In the auto mode, for example, the air purifier smartly adjusts blower fan speed based on air quality conditions. The Cuckoo Air Purifier may not be tech-rich but it is an effective indoor air purifier good for small spaces. It cleans the air of the particulate matters and odour. It has a three-layer filter; a pre-filter to catch dust and hair, a HEPA filter to clean the air of ultra-fine particles, and an activated carbon filter to remove harmful gases and unpleasant odours from the air. Besides, the air purifier has built-in UV LEDs to neutralise airborne bacteria and viruses.

Verdict

The Cuckoo Air Purifier cleans the air of pollutants, smoke, dust, pollen allergen, bacteria, and viruses. It lacks smart capabilities yet makes a good deal because it does not cuts corners on fundamentals. It has a minimal but functional design, three-stage air filtration process, and UV on top to round up the package.

Brazil court fines Apple mn for not including chargers with iPhones

Brazil court fines Apple $19 mn for not including chargers with iPhones

A court in has fined nearly $19 million for not selling iPhones with a charging socket unit, saying it must provide chargers with its iPhones in the country.

has said it will appeal the decision.

According to Barron’s, the judge called the non-inclusion of chargers in phone purchases an “abusive practice” that “requires consumers to purchase a second product in order for the first to work.”

The tech giant stopped giving power adapters with its iPhones in 2020 with 12, citing environmental concerns.

The company now only gives charging cable with new iPhones.

According to Apple, not bundling chargers with iPhones will save 861,000 tonnes of copper, zinc and tin.

However, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice told that it can help the environment by allowing USB-C support in its devices.

“It is evident that, under the justification of a ‘green initiative,’ the defendant imposes on the consumer a required purchase of charger adaptors that were previously supplied along with the product,” said the court’s ruling.

Tech giant Apple might bring USB-C port to AirPods and Mac accessories by 2024.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company might introduce USB-C to its newest AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods by the year 2024, while Mac accessories like the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad may convert to USB-C as soon as the next year.

“It’s a safe bet that those accessories will move to USB-C in their next incarnation”, Gurman was quoted as saying in a recent report.

As the European Union moves to mandate USB-C charging on new smartphones, tablets, and headphones introduced in the territory in late 2024, there has been a rumoured shift away from Lightning ports.

5.3 bn phones to be dumped in 2022, but only few will be disposed: Report

5.3 bn phones to be dumped in 2022, but only few will be disposed: Report

Roughly 5.3 billion mobile or will drop out of use this year, and only a small number of them will be disposed off properly, according to a report.

Brussels-based Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Forum conducted surveys to understand why so many households and businesses fail to bring electronic gadgets in for repair or recycling.

The surveys show that, of the 8,775 European households across five European Union countries Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Romania and Slovenia and a separate UK survey, the average household contains 74 e-products such as phones, tablets, laptops, electric tools, hair dryers, toasters and other appliances (excluding lamps).

Of those 74 average total e-products, 13 are being hoarded — 9 of them unused but working and 4 broken.

Stacked flat atop one another at an average depth of 9 mm that many disused phones would rise roughly 50,000 km — 120 times higher than the International Space Station; one-eighth of the way to the Moon, according to a statement.

Further, despite their valuable gold, copper, silver, palladium and other recyclable components, experts expect a majority will disappear into drawers, closets, cupboards or garages, or be tossed into waste bins bound for landfills or incineration.

The top five hoarded small electrical and electronic equipments in Europe are small consumer electronics and accessories (headphones, remote controls, etc.), small household equipment (clocks, irons, etc.).

These also include small information technology equipment (external hard drives, routers, keyboards, mice, etc.), mobile and smart-phones and small equipment for food preparation (toasters, food processing, grills, etc.).

“We focussed this year on small e-waste items because it is very easy for them to accumulate unused and unnoticed in households, or to be tossed into the ordinary garbage bin,” said Pascal Leroy, Director General of the WEEE Forum, the organisation behind International E-Waste Day.

“People tend not to realise that all these seemingly insignificant items have a lot of value, and together at a global level represent massive volumes,” Leroy said.

The report says LED lamps rank top of the list of products most likely to be trashed.

According to the survey results, share of hoarded small kitchen and household equipment, laptops and tablets of the total stock of those products in households country-wise is: Italy (29 per cent), The Netherlands (17 per cent), UK (14 per cent), Slovenia (12 pre cent), Romania (9 per cent) and Portugal (8 per cent).

The surveys were conducted from June to September, 2022, by the members of the WEEE Forum and the results were consolidated by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Sustainable Cycles (SCYCLE) Programme.

“The producer responsibility organisations in the WEEE Forum that manage the collection of e-waste are constantly working to make the proper disposal of small e-waste simple and convenient for users and households,” said Leroy.

“Providing collection boxes in supermarkets, pick up of small broken appliances upon delivery of new ones and offering PO Boxes to return small e-waste are just some of the initiatives introduced to encourage the return of these items,” he added.

Microsoft to soon rebrand Office as ‘Microsoft 365’ after 30 years

Microsoft to soon rebrand Office as ‘Microsoft 365’ after 30 years

In a bid to make a major change to its Office branding, the tech giant will soon rename it as “ 365″, after more than 30 years.

According to The Verge, Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint are still available, but will now frequently refer to them as being a part of rather than Microsoft Office.

“In the coming months, Office.com, the Office mobile app, and the Office app for Windows will become the app, with a new icon, a new look, and even more features,” Microsoft was quoted as saying.

The Office app for Windows, iOS, and Android will all get a facelift in January, with the initial logo and design changes appearing at Office.com in November.

will now be home to Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Loop, Clipchamp, Stream, and Microsoft’s new Designer app.

A central Microsoft 365 app for both mobile and desktop will include a feed of relevant colleagues and meetings, a hub for all your files and documents, and custom tagging to group and organise content, the report said.

The Microsoft Office brand won’t disappear instantly, though. Microsoft will continue to offer one-time purchases of its Office bundle of apps to consumers and businesses through Office 2021 and Office LTSC plans, it added.

Microsoft introduces 4 practical tools to empower content creators

Microsoft introduces 4 practical tools to empower content creators

As the content creators’ economy grows, has launched four new practical tools for content creators to unleash their creativity.

The new tools are called Designer, Clipchamp, Microsoft Create and Image Creator.

The ‘Microsoft Designer’ is a graphic design app in (formerly Office 365) that allows creators to create social media posts, invitations, digital postcards, graphics, and more.

Microsoft Designer is powered by AI technology, so creators do not need to create cards or social media posts from scratch, according to the company.

Meanwhile, ‘Microsoft Climpchap’ is a free video editor by which content creators can create all types of videos (vlogs, reels, etc) in no time.

With Climpchap, creators can make professional-grade videos, without needing to be an editing expert, said the company.

Moreover, a new website called ‘Microsoft Create’ has been developed to help people create videos, graphic designs, documents, presentations and more.

The website brings together the content creation apps from Designer to Clipchamp to PowerPoint to Word and beyond.

“The ‘Microsoft Create’ website is live and available for anyone to use. We’ll continue to build new functionality and content into the site over time,” the company added.

With ‘Image Creator’, content creators will be able to create images that don’t yet exist.

Image Creator will let creators bring their ideas to life. Simply type in a description of something, any additional context like location or activity, and an art style, and Image Creator will make it for you, the tech giant added.
