YouTube rolls out handles to channels for easier mentions, engagements

YouTube rolls out handles to channels for easier mentions, engagements

has introduced handles, a new way for people to easily find and engage with creators and each other on the Google-owned streaming platform.

Handles will appear on channel pages and Shorts so that they will be instantly and consistently recognisable. It will soon be simpler and faster to mention each other in comments, community posts, video descriptions, and more.

“For example, creators can be shouted out in a mention in comments or tagged in the title of a recent collab, helping them increase visibility and reach with new audiences,” the company said in a blogpost.

“Handles join channel names as another way to identify a channel, but unlike channel names, handles are truly unique to each channel so creators can further establish their distinct presence and brand on YouTube,” it added.

Over the next month, the platform will notify creators when they can choose a handle for their channel.

“In most cases, if a channel already has a personalised URL, that will automatically become their default handle, or they can opt to change the handle for their channel as soon as the notification in Studio comes through,” the platform said.

“Because handles must be unique and every channel on YouTube will have one, we are rolling them out gradually,” it added.

The timing of when a creator will get access to the handles selection process depends on several factors, including overall YouTube presence, subscriber count and whether the channel is active or inactive.

Global PC shipments continue to decline another 15% in Q3: Report

Global PC shipments continue to decline another 15% in Q3: Report

The traditional PC industry continued to decline, with worldwide shipments reaching 74.3 million units in the third quarter of 2022, says a new report.

According to IDC, cooling demand and uneven supply have contributed to a year-over-year contraction of 15.0 per cent.

However, shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were driven mainly by commercial refreshes due to the looming end of support for Windows 7.

“Consumer demand has remained muted though promotional activity from the likes of Apple and other players has helped soften the fall and reduce channel inventory by a couple of weeks across the board,” Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, said in a statement.

“Supply has also reacted to the new lows by reducing orders, with Apple being the only exception as their third quarter supply increased to make up for lost orders stemming from the lockdowns in China during the second quarter,” Ubrani added.

Ahead of Apple, in the top position, Lenovo saw its shipments shrink YoY 16.1 per cent to 16.9 million, HP declined 27.8 per cent to 12.7 million, and Dell dropped 21.2 per cent to 11.96 million.

Apple may bring USB-C port to AirPods, Mac accessories by 2024

Apple may bring USB-C port to AirPods, Mac accessories by 2024

Tech giant might bring USB-C port to AirPods and Mac accessories by 2024, the media reported.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company might introduce USB-C to its newest AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods by the year 2024, while Mac accessories like the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad may convert to USB-C as soon as the next year.

“It’s a safe bet that those accessories will move to USB-C in their next incarnation”, Gurman was quoted as saying.

As the European Union moves to mandate USB-C charging on new smartphones, tablets, and headphones introduced in the territory in late 2024, there has been a rumoured shift away from Lightning ports.

Before EU legislation takes effect, will replace its AirPods, the report said.

Tony Fadell, inventor of the iPod, has said that should include USB-C port in iPhones, as the European Union passed a resolution on USB Type-C as standard charging port.

The debate started when a Twitter user questioned if the iPod would succeed if Apple was forced to utilise USB 1.0 rather than the fast FireWire technology.

“I can’t see a problem. The world has converged on USB-C. The physical and user limits have been hit. Next up is wireless per, not a diff physical connection. So I’m not too worried about this regulation. They’re simply forcing Apple to do the right thing. It’s overdue frankly”, Fadell posted on Twitter.
