NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Apple Inc’s wireless earphones AirPods will be manufactured in India, television channel CNBC TV18 reported on Monday, citing the country’s IT ministry.

The iPhone 14 will be manufactured by Dec. 2022 at Foxconn’s facility near Chennai in southern India, CNBC TV18 added.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone SE 4 to feature 6.1-inch LCD display with top notch

Tech giant Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone SE will feature a 6.1-inch LCD display and a “notch” cutout at the top of the display.

According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, the device will feature a 6.1-inch display with a notch, reports MacRumors.

Whether the iPhone SE notch will contain a TrueDepth camera array like other iPhone models to facilitate Face ID is not known.

Some rumours indicate that the iPhone SE will not gain Face ID, instead sticking with Touch ID like previous models to keep costs down, the report said.

The report mentioned that there will no longer be space for a capacitive Touch ID Home button in the device’s bottom bezel.

Multiple reports, including information from MyDrivers and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, suggest that Apple is planning to add a Touch ID Side button to the iPhone SE, much like the iPad Air and iPad mini.

The size of the fourth-generation iPhone SE notch is not yet known, but it seems plausible that it could be narrower than it was on the iPhone XR if it does not contain components like a dot projector for Face ID because the device features Touch ID.

How Samsung uses repurposed fishing nets in new foldable Galaxy devices

As you enjoy the new Samsung foldable devices, do you realise that the blue part you see in Galaxy Z Flip 4 is made of repurposed fishing nets?

According to Pranveer Singh Rathore, Materials R&D Manager, Samsung Electronics, the blue part, the side key bracket, basically avoids making your phone waterproof from the side keeper and dustproof.

“So it acts as a barrier to water and dust and improves the durability of your phone. Similarly, with the receiver decode that displays connector Cap and other green parts, they act as housing to the crucial components,” he told the media during an interaction.

“As they are housing the critical components, they act as a barrier and are durable so that they can withstand all kinds of climatic conditions and all kinds of stresses they are exposed to,” Rathore added.

Samsung has been in the news for repurposing fishing nets and using them in smartphones.

Every year, around 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets end up in our oceans, posing a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.

Fishing nets are typically made of nylon materials, which have the basic property of absorbing moisture and water.

“Starting with Galaxy S22 earlier this year and now with the new Galaxy Foldables and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, we are scaling up the use of this innovative material,” said the Samsung executive.

By the end of 2022, “we hope to prevent more than 50 tonnes of discarded fishing nets from entering our oceans”.

According to Rathore, they have been researching and developing sustainable materials for over a decade.

“2017 is when we started applying post-consumer materials in inbox charges and in 2018, we applied this material across all the products and chargers. This was when we started developing a new material solution to replace fossil-based raw materials with bio-based raw materials, which are renewable,” he informed.

By 2019, the company was able to develop this material, and then we applied this material to A and M series smartphones in the display frames.

Galaxy Buds 2 Pro contains mostly recycled materials. More than 90 per cent of the plastics used in Galaxy buds 2 Pro are recycled materials.

The repurposed fishing Nets are used in the internal brackets of the charging case, and the post-consumer materials are used in all the exterior parts of the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

“With the Galaxy Watch 5, we also introduced post-consumer materials in the ECG and BIA keys, which you can see from the outside,” said Rathore.

By 2030, Samsung plans to establish system in which minerals extracted from all collected waste batteries can be reused

“By 2030, 50 per cent of plastic used in products will incorporate recycled resin and 100 per cent by 2050. The Galaxy Z Fold4 has already been designed to incorporate plastics recycled from discarded fishing nets and other marine waste, and the success seen here will soon be expanded to additional products,” according to the company.

Why India needs a central regulatory framework for online gaming?

To bring about uniformity in the online gaming industry, the central government is exploring the need for a central regulatory framework. The policymakers have begun consultations and discussions for such a framework, a report by Economic Times (ET) said.

The regulator will have power to block unregistered gaming platforms. The operators will reportedly be asked to get the know-your customer (KYC) verification done to protect minor players.

Why India needs an online gaming regulatory framework?

A recent report by KPMG showed the presence of over 400 online gaming companies in India.

Of late, several cases of tax evasion by these gaming apps have been reported. In September, the income tax (I-T) department issued show cause notices to seven online gaming firms and about three dozen high-value players for a possible evasion of Rs 28,000 crore.

A 30 per cent tax and other penalties have been levied on these players. The portals have also been asked to deduct 0.1 per cent from the winnings of the players amounting to more than Rs 10,000.

For indirect taxes, the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) is set to issue notices to gaming platforms to recover over Rs 2.8 trillion in the form of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

In July, a Group of Ministers (GoM) decided to hike the GST rate on such platforms from 18 per cent to 28 per cent.

However, it was decided that online gaming will not be clubbed with “gambling”.

Currently, betting and gambling are under the state list in the Constitution of India. Online gaming is not categorised under any list.

While some states including Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have prohibited gaming as well as online gambling, other states like Meghalaya, Sikkim and Nagaland have made it mandatory for gaming platforms to get licenses.

But a wider national regulatory framework is yet elusive in India. The experts are of the view that as the states cannot block access to foreign gambling websites, this issue can only be dealt with efficiently using a central framework.

Lufthansa bans Apple AirTags from luggage, says ‘danger to flight’

Apple’s AirTags have been banned from luggage by the German flag carrier Lufthansa calling them a danger to flight. However, the regulation the airline cites does no such thing, media reports say.

According to AppleInsider, following initial reports in German media, the airline’s Twitter account was asked to confirm that a ban is in place.

In one tweet, Lufthansa wrote: “Banning activated AirTags from luggage as they are classified as dangerous and need to be turned off.”

Pressed further on the classification, the carrier claimed: “According to International Civilian Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines, baggage trackers are subject to the dangerous goods regulations.

“Furthermore, due to their transmission function, the trackers must be deactivated during the flight if they are in checked baggage and cannot be used as a result.”

But, the claim that the airline is making about ICAO guidelines is completely wrong, the report said.

Specifically, the regulation that Lufthansa is citing specifically talks about lithium-ion battery regulations, such as those used in larger devices like a MacBook Pro.

First, an AirTag uses a battery that is too small to be considered an issue under the guidelines.

Secondly, the AirTag uses CR2032 cells that aren’t lithium-ion batteries and as such, not covered under the regulation.

If CR2032 cells were, in fact, a danger, then watches using the same CR2032 would be disallowed on flights — and they are not.
