Over 100 mn consumers want to upgrade to 5G in India: Ericcson report

More than 100 million users with 5G-ready wish to upgrade to a subscription in 2023 while a majority of them are open to adopting a higher data-tiered plan in the next 12 months, a report by Consumer Lab has shown.

Titled “Promise of in India”, the study carried out in the second quarter this year reflects the views of 300 million urban smartphone users. According to the study, consumer readiness remains one of the highest in the world. “Intention to upgrade to 5G in urban India is two times higher than their counterparts in markets like the UK and US where 5G has already been launched,” Jasmeet Sethi, head of Consumer Lab at Ericsson, said.

Over the past two years, India has witnessed a threefold increase in smartphone users who own a 5G handset, he added. Prime Minister is set to officially inaugurate 5G services in India on October 1.

The report stresses that superiority could emerge as a driver for consumer loyalty with 59 per cent of smartphone users intending to upgrade to 5G in the first 12 months. Among them, 36 per cent plan to turn to the best provider of .

Expectations from the new technology remain high, with 60 per cent of early adopters who have a compatible phone expect 5G to bring new innovative applications, which are considered more appealing than better coverage.

These users are even willing to pay 45 per cent premium for a plan bundled with novel experiences provided their expectations are met.

“Our new generation 5G and multi-band radios that will be deployed across networks will allow for the best user experience, while the improved energy efficiency will reduce the cost of operations and impact on the environment, thereby ensuring sustainable and responsible 5G roll-out,” Nitin Bansal, head of India, said.

He added that while 5G will play an important role in achieving India’s digital inclusion goals, especially in bringing broadband to rural and remote homes, the pace of roll-out will be based on the response in key urban markets where it is set to launch first.

The report pointed out that 5G will improve network satisfaction in India, especially for gaming. Seven in 10 smartphone users are looking forward to enhanced video streaming quality once they switch to 5G. 5G-ready users are already engaging in using more digital services compared to 4G users; 60 per cent of the 5G-ready users are already engaging with more than three digital services. 5G will trigger an increase in consumption of new format high-resolution video streaming and cloud gaming, the report said.

The study tested 27 5G-enhanced services to determine the top 10 that Indian wish for in their 5G plans. These include health and fitness; 360-degree live video streaming; cloud gaming; 5G TV package; virtual meeting space; immersive education; best-seat event experience; interactive calling; location-based augmented reality shopping; and virtual reality shopping.

On Wednesday, also announced the introduction of a new line of 5G radios for India. The ultra-lightweight Massive MIMO 32T32R radios will be manufactured in India. These energy-efficient 5G radios come with coverage-enhancing features such as Uplink Booster that make them relevant for a densely populated country like India.

Over the past two years, India has witnessed a three times increase in smartphone users who own a 5G handset,” the Promise of 5G report released by ConsumerLab said.

Fifty-nine per cent of all smartphone users in the country intend to upgrade to 5G in the next 12 months.

Out of these 59 per cent, “36 per cent plan to churn to the best provider of the when it is available,” according to the report.

Upcoming Google Pixel 7 Pro may come with minor upgrades: Reports

Upcoming Google Pixel 7 Pro may come with minor upgrades: Reports

Google’s upcoming flagship smartphone Pixel 7 Pro will reportedly come with minor upgrades as compared to its predecessor.

The switch to the Tensor G2 is expected, the new chip is allegedly bringing in GPU, NPU and modem improvements, reports GSMArena.

According to the report, the Pro model will be available in 12GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB configurations. There is no word on a 12GB/512GB model like the current phones.

The Pro phone is expected to have a similar 50MP main, 12MP ultra wide and 48MP telephoto setup as its predecessor, though the tele camera will allegedly use a new sensor, a Samsung GM1 stepping in to replace the Sony IMX586.

The selfie camera will have a subtle change as well — resolution will remain at 11MP, though the new module is expected to have autofocus (using a new Samsung 3J1 sensor).

The display sounds the same as before — a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED panel with QHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. That will remain a major selling point over the FHD+ 90Hz display of the vanilla Pixel 7.

The battery will be basically the same with 5,000mAh capacity and support for 30W fast charging (though whether the phone actually hits 30W remains to be seen). Wireless charging will be supported on both Pixel 7 models.

Prices are expected to remain the same — $600 for a Pixel 7, $900 for a Pixel 7 Pro, the report said.

iPhone 14’s India production soon after global launch shows maturity: Moody

iPhone 14’s India production soon after global launch shows maturity: Moody

The manufacturing of iPhone 14 in India within weeks of the global launch demonstrates the maturity of Apple’s manufacturing capabilities in the country, according to Moody’s Investors Service.

Increasing volumes of locally-manufactured iPhones will also accelerate Apple’s expansion strategy in India, Raj Joshi, Senior Vice President, Corporate Finance Group, Moody’s said.

The Indian smartphone market’s large size and strong growth prospects as the country unveils its 5G network “make it an attractive long-term market for Apple”, according to a note by Moody’s.

“Apple’s plan to manufacture iPhone 14 products in India is credit positive because it will diversify its manufacturing base that is highly concentrated in China,” Joshi said.

Moody’s in its commentary on Apple’s plans to manufacture iPhone 14 products in India further observed that Apple has produced iPhones in India since 2017 “…but the manufacturing of iPhone 14 within weeks of their global launch demonstrates the maturity of the company’s manufacturing capabilities in India that we expect to ramp up quickly.”

Moody’s said Apple had less than five per cent unit share of the smartphone market in India, the second-largest smartphone market by unit volumes, and iPhone sales in India nearly doubled in June 2022 quarter over prior year.

The commentary assumes significance given that Apple has begun manufacturing its marquee new iPhone 14 in India as the global tech giant taps into production prowess outside of China.

This time around, the production in the world’s second-biggest smartphone market commenced within weeks of the September 7 unveiling of the device.

“We are excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India…The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities,” Apple had said in a statement earlier this week.

Cupertino, California-headquartered Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with iPhone SE.

Today, Apple manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones, including iPhone SE, iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and now, iPhone 14 in the country.

The Made-in-India iPhone 14 will begin to reach local customers in next few days. Phones manufactured in India will be both for the Indian market and exports.

The iPhone 14 will be shipped from Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility on the outskirts of Chennai. Foxconn is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and major iPhone assembler.

Apple, which has been making most of its iPhones in China, could make one out of four iPhones in India by 2025, JP Morgan analysts had said in a note last week.

iPhone devices in the past were assembled in India about six to nine months after production started in Chinese factories. This time the duration has been cut short to just a couple of weeks.

Intel Unison: What is it, rollout timeline, supported platforms, and more

Intel Unison: What is it, rollout timeline, supported platforms, and more

At the Innovation event on Tuesday, unveiled the Unison . The solution that would let the Android and iOS users transfer files, answer calls, and read text on select Evo-compliant PCs. Intel said the aim of Unison is to help you to stay focused during your workday by reducing disruptions that constant device-switching can cause.

With the Intel Unison, users would be able to transfer files and photos between a PC and an Android or iOS device. Besides, it would allow smartphone users to send and receive text messages from PCs using keyboard as input and monitor as screen. The Unison would also support calls, allowing users to attend phone calls from their PCs. Lastly, there would be support to receive and manage phone notifications on the PC to stay connected and maintain control.

A similar solution, named Your Phone, already exists in Windows 10 and 11. However, it has limited functionality and does not support the iOS platform. Unison is highly ambitious as it is available across both iOS and Android OS. It also offers flexibility in connection across wired or wireless technologies. The phone can be connected to its cellular network and you can work with Unison through the cloud. In contrast, other competing solutions require a smartphone and laptop to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Supported platforms

The Intel Unison solution is currently available on select Intel Evo-compliant PCs based on Windows platform. At the launch, the Unison will be compatible with both Android and iOS-based phones. It is going to be part of the Windows program and would come pre-installed on a small subset of Evo-compliant PCs for starters to experience ahead of mass rollout. It is supported only on Windows 11 22H2 and later. The Unison will be available as an app on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for Android and iOS smartphones, respectively. Unison is supported on iOS 15 or later, and Android 9 or later.

Rollout timeline

According to Intel, Unison will launch with select 12th Generation Core laptops this year. It will be available on more Intel Evo designs powered by the 13th Generation Intel Core in 2023.
