Amazon introduces Fire TV Cube (third-gen), Alexa Voice Remote Pro in India

Amazon on Wednesday unveiled the third-generation Fire TV Cube, its flagship media player. Alongside, it launched the Alexa Voice Remote Pro. Priced at Rs 13,999, the Amazon Fire TV Cube is coming soon to India. However, the Alexa Voice Remote Pro, priced at Rs 2,499, is now available for pre-order on Amazon India.

Amazon Fire TV Cube: Details

The third-generation Fire TV Cube is powered by an octa-core 2.0 GHz processor, which is 20 per cent better than the previous generation – according to Amazon. It supports 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, HDR, and Dolby Atmos Audio. The media player comes with ‘Super Resolution Upscaling’ feature, which converts HD content to 4K for clear details. It also acts as Alexa with built-in microphones. Unlike the previous-gen Cube, it features both HDMI input and output. Therefore, it can be connected to set-top boxes, soundbars, and more. Other features include Wi-Fi 6 support, Ethernet port, IR extender and a USB-A port. The Fire TV Cube also supports Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA), allowing customers to directly connect compatible Bluetooth hearing aids.

Alexa Voice Remote Pro: Details

The Alexa Voice Remote Pro comes with a remote finder feature, customisable buttons, and motion-activated backlit buttons. It has a built-in speaker, which makes an audible ring to help you find the remote. To search the remote, simply say, ‘Alexa, find my remote’ or use the remote finder button on the Fire TV app. The remote has two customisable buttons for shortcut to streaming apps, channels and Alexa commands. It has motion-activated backlit buttons, which illuminate when the remote is picked up in low light.

iPhone 14 Pro’s camera bump hampers wireless charging capabilities: Report

Tech giant Apple’s recently launched iPhone 14 Pro’s wireless charging capability is reportedly hampered by the phone’s thick camera housing.

According to GizmoChina, multiple complaints have been made by users in several forums to highlight the problem.

The users claim that there is a lack of compatibility between wireless chargers and the iPhone 14 Pro with the camera bump preventing some devices from charging the smartphone.

The large camera bump of the iPhone 14 Pro is a distinguishing external feature from its predecessors, the report said.

The cameras come with greater power but users have reported uncontrollable shaking while using third-party apps. The bumpy camera setup could also be causing compatibility issues with wireless chargers, it added.

The Pro models feature the Always-On display, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via satellite, and an innovative new way to receive notifications and activities with the Dynamic Island.

iPhone 14 Pro will be available in deep purple, silver, gold, and space black in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage capacities.

Amazon unveils contactless device to monitor breathing while sleeping

Amazon.com Inc on Wednesday announced a contactless gadget that can monitor people’s sleep, along with updates to its lineup of voice-controlled devices and e-readers.

The online retailer said its $139.99 sleep gadget, known as Halo Rise, tracks room temperature, humidity and light, plus the breathing patterns of the person closest to it. The goal is to provide insight to users on why they may or may not feel well-rested when they wake up.

Like peers Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google, Amazon has invested in health-tracking technology for consumers, at times drawing regulatory scrutiny for sensitive information it aimed to collect, like body fat percentage via its fitness wristband called Halo.

Amazon has said privacy is foundational to its work. The sleep device will encrypt health data and has no camera or microphone.

The retailer is exploring health more broadly as well, announcing in July it would buy primary care provider One Medical for $3.5 billion.

The Halo Rise is not a medical device and not FDA-approved, Amazon said.

Beyond the bet on health, Amazon announced at its virtual devices showcase a new Kindle e-reader with a pen for annotating books digitally. The company also announced updated versions of its in-home and in-car speakers with voice control and new internet connectivity devices, among other gadgets.

What is NaVIC?

The Global Positioning System or GPS has become entrenched in our daily life. Whether we want to maneuver traffic, or find a restaurant, it has made our life easier. But did you ever wonder who owns the GPS or who runs it?

Originally Navstar GPS, the Global Positioning System is a satellite-based radionavigation system owned by the US government. And the United States Space Force operates it.

India has found its homegrown alternative to the GPS in the form of NavIC. The government is taking rapid steps to enhance its adoption.

What is NavIC?

NavIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation. It is an independent navigation satellite system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). NavIC consists of eight satellites and covers the entire India. Additionally, it covers up to 1,500 km from its boundaries.

When was NavIC started?

NavIC was originally approved in 2006 with a $174 million budget. It was expected to be completed by late 2011. But it only became operational in 2018.

How is NavIC used?

Currently, NavIC is being used to track public vehicles in India. It is also used to send emergency warning alerts to fishermen venturing into the sea where there is no terrestrial network connectivity. Also, it is being used for tracking and providing information in case of natural disasters. Off late, the Centre is pushing smartphone companies to adopt NavIC in India.

NavIC vs GPS and others

GPS provides global coverage but NavIC is currently limited to India and the adjacent areas. Three more navigational systems offer global coverage like the GPS. These are Galileo from the European Union, Russia-owned GLONASS and China’s Beidou.

Japan’s QZSS provides navigational coverage of Asia-Pacific with a special focus on Japan.

Why is the government vouching for NavIC?

The government is aiming to remove foreign dependence on India’s navigational requirements. It is more important in the case of strategic sectors. The centre believes that relying on GPS and others like it may not be wise for India as they are operated by defence agencies of their respective countries.

CERT-In warns WhatsApp users of bugs that remote attackers can exploit

The Indian cyber agency CERT-In on Wednesday warned WhatsApp users of multiple bugs which could be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.

In an advisory, CERT-In, under the IT Ministry, described two remote code execution vulnerabilities in Meta-owned WhatsApp in both Android and iOS versions.

The first vulnerability exists in WhatsApp due to integer overflow.

“A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute remote code in an established video call,” warned the cyber agency.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system, said CERT-In.

Hackers can also exploit a second vulnerability in WhatsApp by sending a specially-crafted video file that can put users’ information at risk.

CERT-In advised WhatsApp users to install latest security updates.

WhatsApp has nearly 500 million users in the country, according the third-party reports.
