Netflix sets up first internal studio to expand range of video games

Inc. is creating its first in-house studio in a push to be less reliable on third-party creators and expand its gaming offerings.

The new studio will be based in and headed by Marko Lastikka, according to a statement from on Monday. Lastikka previously spent more than five years at Zynga Inc., where he worked on FarmVille 3, and before that was the co-founder and executive producer at Electronic Arts Inc.’s Tracktwenty studio in Helsinki, according to his LinkedIn page.

“This is another step in our vision to build a world-class games studio that will bring a variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games — with no ads and no in-app purchases — to our hundreds of millions of members around the world,” Amir Rahimi, vice president of game at Neflix, said in the statement.

The new games studio will be Netflix’s fourth overall, after the company acquired another Helsinki-based studio, Next Games, and Boss Fight Entertainment, earlier this year. brought on Night School Studio in September 2021.

Netflix currently has 31 mobile games in its catalog, which are free of ads and in-app purchases but only available to subscribers. The company plans to have 50 games available by the end of the year. That includes the Next Games-developed Stranger Things: Puzzle Games, which is based on the platform’s hit show and will soon be exclusive to Netflix.

Netflix embarked on its push into in 2021 as a way to diversity its streaming offerings as growth stagnates. But just over a year later, fewer than 1% of Netflix’s 221 million users play games on the platform, CNBC reported last month, citing an analysis by Apptopia. The rush to bolster the gaming division comes after the company lost 970,000 subscribers in the second quarter.

The new studio doesn’t yet have a time line for production. “It’s still early days, and we have much more work to do to deliver a great games experience on Netflix,” Rahimi said. “These four studios, each with different strengths and focus areas, will develop games that will suit the diverse tastes of our members.”

Centre pushes for home-grown navigation system, smartphone makers jolted

Centre pushes for home-grown navigation system, smartphone makers jolted

India is pushing smartphone manufacturers to make the new devices compatible with its homegrown system by next year.

According to a Reuters report, the move has left tech giants like Samsung, and worrying, who fear elevated costs and disruptions, as this would require hardware changes. A push for the new homegrown system aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s drive for self-reliance.

India has, over the years, expanded the use of its regional system, Navigation with the Indian Constellation (NavIC). The aims to reduce its dependence on foreign systems, including the widely used U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS). China, European Union, Japan, and Russia are some countries with their own global or regional navigation system as opposed to GPS.

According to the Indian government, NavIC provides more accurate domestic navigation, and its use is likely to benefit the economy.

What is NavIC?

NavIC is an independent, stand-alone navigation satellite system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Initially approved in 2006 at a total cost of $174 million, NavIC was expected to be completed by late 2011. However, it became fully operational in 2018.

It consists of eight satellites and covers India’s landmass up to 1,500 km (930 miles) from its boundaries. NavIC’s uptake is minimal and is used in vehicle tracking in the country, providing emergency warning alerts to fishermen venturing into the deep sea and monitoring and providing information related to natural disasters.

How does NavIC compare?

The main difference is the serviceable area covered by these systems. While GPS caters to users across the globe and its satellites circle the earth twice a day, NavIC is currently for use in India and its adjacent areas.

Why is India promoting NavIC?

Conceived to reduce dependence on foreign navigation systems, NavIC is an indigenous positioning system under Indian control. There is no risk of the service being withdrawn or denied in a given situation. Whereas relying on systems like GPS and GLONASS might not always be reliable as they are operated by the defence agencies of the respective nations.
