Microsoft intends to offer Apple devices to employees in China: Report

Microsoft intends to offer Apple’s iOS-based devices to its employees in China to access authentication apps, a company spokesperson said on Monday, citing absence of Google’s Android services in the country.

Microsoft has been under increased scrutiny after a series of security breaches, the latest being that of Russian hackers who spied and accessed emails of the company’s employees and customers earlier this year.

The development was first reported by Bloomberg News, which, citing an internal memo, said the Windows OS-maker instructed its employees in China to use Apple devices at workplace from September.

As a part of Microsoft’s global Secure Future Initiative, the move to switch to iOS-devices stems from the lack of availability of Google Play Store in China that limits its employees’ access to security apps such as Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass, the report added.

“Due to the lack of availability of Google Mobile Services in this region, we look to offer employees a means of accessing these required apps, such as an iOS device,” a company spokesperson told Reuters in an email.

Microsoft is among those U.S. companies that have a strong presence in China. It entered the Chinese market in 1992 and also operates a large research and development center in the country.

The company will provide iPhone 15 models to employees, currently using Android handsets across China, including Hong Kong, the Bloomberg report said.

We plan to double shipments to 700 mn in India in 10 yrs: Xiaomi president

We plan to double shipments to 700 mn in India in 10 yrs: Xiaomi president

Achieving higher local value addition in electronic product manufacturing is one of the biggest challenges in India due to the absence of electronic components.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi expects to double its device shipments in India to 700 million over the next 10 years, a senior company official said on Monday.

Speaking on the 10th anniversary of Xiaomi operations in India, company President Muralikrishnan B said the company has shipped 250 million smartphones in the last 10 years, and a total of 350 million units across all product categories.

“I’m very happy to report that in the past 10 years of Xiaomi’s existence in India, we have shipped 25 crore smartphones, 250 million smartphones and 35 crore devices overall across categories. This is between 2014 to 2024. Now that we’re talking about the 10 years of tomorrow, we want to double our shipment to 700 million devices in India,” Muralikrishnan told PTI in an interview.

He said the company is mulling to start manufacturing artificial intelligence-based Internet of Things devices in India, and conversations are on for making its tablet in the country.

“We have smartphones, we have smart televisions, we have audio products that are made in India. We are also exploring opportunities to localise various other AI IoT products. We are also committed to broadening and deepening competence localisation in India. We have discussed this in the past simpler products or just battery charger cables are already sourced in India,” Muralikrishnan said.

Xiaomi has partnered with Dixon Technologies, Foxconn, Optiemus, BYD etc to make devices in India.

“In terms of component localisation, we will go broader and deeper. In our total bill of material (BOM), the local non-semiconductor accounts for 35 per cent share, which is sourced locally. We expect that number to go up to 55 per cent in the next two years,” Muralikrishnan said.

Achieving higher local value addition in electronic product manufacturing is one of the biggest challenges in India due to the absence of electronic components.

“In terms of domestic value addition, net value addition was 18 per cent in the financial year (FY) 2023 and with our focus on deepening and broadening the component ecosystem, we expect to take that number to 22 per cent by FY25,” Muralikrishnan said.

Research analysts differed in their estimate of Xiaomi’s smartphone market share in India in the March 2024 quarter.

Cybermedia Research estimates it to be marginally behind Samsung at 18.6 per cent, Counterpoint Research projected it at 18.8 per cent, while IDC pegs it to be around 13 per cent.

However, all three leading research firms estimate Xiaomi to be among the top four smartphone brands in the country.

Counterpoint estimates that Xiaomi was replaced by Samsung as the top player in the smart TV segment in the March quarter.

It estimates Samsung’s share to be around 16 per cent, LG’s 15 per cent and Xiaomi 12 per cent.

Muralikrishnan said the company did have challenging times during COVID-19 when its market share declined.

“We looked at 2023 as the year of reset, refresh and recharge. We recalibrated our strategy and got back the growth momentum in the second half of 2023 when we got back on to the growth track. We have grown substantially faster than the market,” he said.

In its first acquisition in India in the silicon design space, IT consulting and services major Accenture announced the acquisition of Bengaluru-based Excelmax Technologies. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisition enhances Accenture’s growing silicon design and engineering capabilities. Excelmax provides custom silicon solutions used in consumer devices, data centres, artificial intelligence (AI), and computational platforms that enable edge AI deployments, to clients in the automotive, telecommunications, and high-tech industries.

The acquisition will bring in 450 strong engineering team of Excelmax joining the global IT player’s team. This is the second acquisition in the semiconductor design space by Accenture. In 2022, Accenture announced the acquisition of XtremeEDA, an Ottawa, Canada-based silicon design services company.

Mahesh Zurale, global lead – Advanced Technology Centres Global Network, Accenture, said, “Accenture’s acquisition of Excelmax Technologies brings approximately 450 highly skilled silicon professionals to our Advanced Technology Centres in India. With the global demand for silicon solutions on the rise, India is becoming a hotbed for chip design. Growing our skilled talent in the country across physical and RTL design, verification, emulation, and firmware engineering will help us expand our capabilities in the silicon design space and accelerate innovation for our worldwide clients.”

Founded in 2019, Excelmax brings comprehensive semiconductor solutions from high-level design to detailed physical layout ready for manufacturing, and full turnkey execution. The company adds approximately 450 professionals to Accenture in key areas such as emulation, automotive, physical design, analog, logic design, and verification, expanding Accenture’s ability to help global clients accelerate edge computing innovation.

Growing capabilities inorganically has been Accenture’s strategy. In FY24 (YTD), it acquired 35 companies at a total cost of $5.2 billion. In the past, the company has acquired Indian and India footprint companies.

“With the rapid evolution of new technologies like generative AI and the growth of connected products, more intricate, specialized chips with enhanced performance and efficiency are required,” said Karthik Narain, group chief executive—Technology at Accenture. “Our acquisition of Excelmax enhances our expertise across every aspect of silicon design and development—from concept to production—so we can help our clients fuel innovation and drive growth.”

“Our focus has always been on developing the best talent to deliver tailor-made solutions for our global clients that help them build and maintain competitive advantage,” said Shekhar Patil, founder & CEO, Excelmax Technologies. “Joining Accenture enables us to remain at the forefront of innovation, providing new and exciting opportunities for both our clients and our people.”

The semiconductor market is experiencing a surge in demand for silicon design engineering, driven by the proliferation of data centres and the increasing use of AI and edge computing. This is further propelled by the growing consumer appetite for electronics, which is driving new investments in the chip design space.

The engineering design space, which would be a similar area as Accenture’s acquisition, has seen some of the largest M&A deals by global and Indian IT services players. Recently, Cognizant announced the acquisition of Belcan in a $1.3 billion transaction. Similarly, Infosys acquired Germany-based in-tech for $480 million.
