Algo rhythm: The race to embrace workplace artificial intelligence

Less than two years since generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) came to the market, organisations are discovering that instead of automating away jobs, the technology is boosting workers’ performance. That’s one of the key findings of Freshworks’ ‘Global AI Workplace Report’ that surveyed more than 7,000 employees of organisations. Employees in India and West Asia have the highest AI usage and expertise.

Odisha Police will use AI technology on a pilot basis for effective traffic and crowd management during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra, a senior police official said.

The Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot festival, is believed to be as old as the Jagannath Temple in Puri. This year, Lord Jagannath Yatra will take place on July 7.

“This is the first time, as a pilot project, we are trying to use AI-based CCTV coverage where all those CCTV points which we have around 40 points where we have placed CCTV cameras. We would be using AI amalgamated with the CCTV system. We would also be using a drone system to identify the blind spots, identify the jam areas. We are also using drones along with the PA (Public address) system so that there are 4-5 identified spots every year where we normally face huge traffic jams and to help assist the police officers,” Additional DGP, Odisha, Dayal Gangwar, told ANI on Saturday.

Earlier on July 6, Bhubaneswar-based miniature artist, L Eswar Rao, curated eco-friendly chariots of the holy trinity Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra using papers and incense sticks ahead of the world-famous Rath Yatra.

Speaking to ANI, the miniature artist L Eswar Rao said, “To mark this year’s Rath Yatra, I decided to craft miniature models of chariots of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra using papers and incense sticks. It took me seven days to complete them with decorative stars. I used tamarind seeds to make the deities.”

Rao further stated that the idols of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra, which are placed on chariots are only half a centimetre long and the holy trinity chariots are two inches tall from top to bottom.

Rao has been practising this miniature art for the last 25 years since he was in school. Whether it is creating the World Cup trophy on a pencil nib or making a tiny sculpture of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel using a soap bar, Rao never misses an opportunity to sculpt fascinating things.

Foxconn Q2 revenue beats market forecast on high AI server demand

Foxconn Q2 revenue beats market forecast on high AI server demand

“Entering the peak season of the second half of the year, we anticipate our operation to gradually gain momentum,” it said. Photo: Shutterstock

Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics maker and Apple’s biggest iPhone assembler, posted on Friday better-than-expected quarterly revenue on AI server demand, and forecast continued growth in the current quarter.

The third quarter is traditionally the start of the season for Taiwan’s tech companies to race to supply smartphones, tablets and other electronics to major vendors such as Apple for Western markets’ year-end holiday period.

Foxconn is also powering ahead due to strong demand for servers for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and its customers include AI darling Nvidia.

This year’s third quarter is expected to see revenue grow both year-on-year and compared with the previous quarter, Foxconn said in a statement.

“Entering the peak season of the second half of the year, we anticipate our operation to gradually gain momentum,” it said.

The company does not provide numerical forecast.

Foxconn, formally called Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, said revenue last month reached T$490.7 billion ($15.12 billion), up 16.1% year-on-year and at the second-highest level for the same period.

For the second quarter, revenue soared 19.1% year-on-year to T$1.55 trillion, beating a T$1.51 trillion LSEG SmartEstimate, which gives greater weight to forecasts from analysts who are more consistently accurate, and a record high for the same period.

Second-quarter revenue in its cloud and networking products segment showed strong growth year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter benefiting from strong AI server demand, it said.

However for smart consumer electronics products, including smartphones, revenue was flat year-on-year, Foxconn said, without providing an explanation.

Foxconn’s shares have surged 105% so far this year, outperforming a 31% jump for the broader Taiwan market.

In line with the overall market, Foxconn’s shares closed flat on Friday ahead of the revenue data release.

The company will report its second-quarter earnings on Aug. 14.

Apple stalling launch of iOS game store in Europe, says Epic Games

Apple stalling launch of iOS game store in Europe, says Epic Games

Apple said it was working with Epic to resolve the issue and launch its games marketplace. The European Commission declined to comment.

“Fortnite” maker Epic Games said on Friday that Apple was impeding its attempts to set up a games store on iPhones and iPads in Europe, the latest escalation in a bitter feud over the technology giant’s control of the iOS app ecosystem.

Apple has twice rejected documents the video-game publisher submitted to launch the Epic Games Store because the design of certain buttons and labels was similar to those used by its App Store, Epic said.

“We are using the same “Install” and “In-app purchases” naming conventions that are used across popular app stores on multiple platforms, and are following standard conventions for buttons in iOS apps,” Epic said in a series of posts on X.

“Apple’s rejection is arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA (Digital Markets Act), and we’ve shared our concerns with the European Commission,” it said.

Apple said it was working with Epic to resolve the issue and launch its games marketplace. The European Commission declined to comment.

Epic and Apple have been embroiled in a legal battle since 2020, when the gaming firm alleged that Apple’s practice of charging up to 30% commissions on in-app payments on its iPhone Operating System (iOS) devices violated U.S. antitrust rules.

Early this year, Apple proposed changes to its App Store policies to comply with certain directives of the DMA that went into force in March.

It allowed alternative app stores on iPhones and an opt-out from using the in-app payments system, but set a “core technology fee”, which several developers found exploitative.

Last month, EU antitrust regulators said Apple’s revised terms failed to meet the standards set in the DMA, and launched another investigation over its new contract requirements for app developers and stores.

Tech wrap Jul 5: CMF Phone 1, WhatsApp, Google Pixel 9, OPPO Reno 12 series

Nothing is set to launch its maiden smartphone under the CMF branding, the CMF Phone 1, on 8 July, alongside accessories such as the CMF Buds Pro 2 and the Watch Pro 2. In the lead-up to the launch, the British consumer technology brand has been unveiling key specification details about all the upcoming CMF products, including the processor powering the CMF Phone 1 and the dial design of the Watch Pro 2.

Xiaomi is set to launch the Redmi 13 5G smartphone in India on July 9. The Chinese electronics maker has listed the smartphone preview page on its India website and partner e-commerce platform Amazon where it has detailed some of the key features and specifications of the upcoming smartphone. According to Xiaomi, the budget 5G smartphone in its Redmi line will boast dual-sided glass, a megapixel-rich main camera sensor, a large display, a big capacity battery, and Qualcomm processor.

Samsung has scheduled the Galaxy Unpacked event for July 10 where the South Korean electronics maker will announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. While the foldable devices will be in focus, announcements related to mobile artificial intelligence (Galaxy AI) and wearable devices, especially the Galaxy Ring, are expected to share the limelight.

After China unveiling in May, OPPO is set to debut the Reno 12 series with its first wave of mobile artificial intelligence features in India on July 12. The series comprises two identical models – Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro – offered in different configurations and imaging systems. However, both the models boast AI-powered media editing tools along with AI text generation and summarisation features.

The OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite offers a decent display, a capable camera system for its price point, and a long-lasting battery. However, this comes at the cost of performance. Overall, if you are looking for a smartphone that serves as a decent daily driver and allows you to take good-looking, social media-friendly pictures, the Nord CE4 Lite is a viable option. However, if performance is your priority, you might want to consider other alternatives in the market.

The Sony ULT Field 1 is a portable Bluetooth speaker with decent sound for the price. The audio quality is modest – even as it provides a well-rounded sound with good definition, it does seem a little lower on bass. If you need to fill a room with some suitable thump, then you will find it missing despite the presence of the ULT button. In this specific case may be a better option is to opt for the bigger Field 7. Nevertheless, the ULT Field 1 is lightweight and portable enough and the company also claims it is a shockproof portable speaker which will survive minor falls as well with its unique design on both the edges. However, the same design is a bit of a dust magnet and on the black colour unit I reviewed, dust accumulation was a put-off.

The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K 2024 is competitively priced within the market, making high-quality streaming accessible to a broad audience. While the Fire TV Stick 4K Max offers additional features and slightly better performance, the 2024 model provides a balanced mix of performance and affordability, making it a more appealing option for most users. That said, the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K 2024 is a no-brainer for those seeking a feature-packed 4K streaming device.

Google is set to launch its Pixel 9 series smartphone at the “Made by Google” event on August 13. Through the teaser video shared by the company that accompanied the event date announcement, Google made it clear that the next-generation Pixel smartphone will take centre stage at the event. The preview also showcased the silhouettes of the upcoming smartphones.

WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new feature that will enable users to create personalised AI avatars of themselves, capable of being placed in various virtual settings. According to The Verge, the feature discovered in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.24.14.7 harnesses a combination of user-provided images, text prompts, and Meta’s AI Llama model to generate these custom avatars.

Chinese tech companies, from industry giants to ambitious startups, converged at the World AI Conference in Shanghai this week to showcase their latest innovations and express strong support for the country’s artificial intelligence sector even as it faces US sanctions.
