CMF Phone 1, Buds 2 Pro, Watch Pro 2 launching on July 8: What to expect

Nothing is set to launch its maiden smartphone under the CMF branding, the CMF Phone 1, on 8 July, alongside accessories such as the CMF Buds Pro 2 and the Watch Pro 2. In the lead-up to the launch, the British consumer technology brand has been unveiling key specification details about all the upcoming CMF products, including the processor powering the CMF Phone 1 and the dial design of the Watch Pro 2. Here is everything we know so far about the upcoming CMF by Nothing devices:

CMF Phone 1: Anticipated features and specifications

Nothing has revealed that the CMF Phone 1 will feature a customisable design that can be uniquely personalised by customers using back panel cases of different colours and textures, along with other functional accessories such as an attachable stand, a lanyard, and a pouch. These accessories can be attached directly to the smartphone, utilising the rotatable dial on the bottom left and screws along the edges. The colour options available for the back cover include Black, Orange, Light Green, and Blue. The Black and Light Green variants will feature a subtle texture, while the Blue and Orange back cases will boast vegan layer textures.

Display and performance

The company has confirmed that the Nothing CMF Phone 1 will sport a 6.67-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the panel will support HDR10+ visuals and offer a peak brightness level of 2000 nits. The smartphone will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 system-on-chip (SoC) and will have up to 16GB of RAM.

Camera

In the imaging department, Nothing has confirmed that the CMF Phone 1 will sport a dual-camera setup on the back, placed on the top left corner of the device. The CMF Phone 1 will feature a 50-megapixel primary sensor from Sony with an f/1.8 lens.

CMF Buds Pro 2: Anticipated features and specifications

The company has confirmed that the second generation of the CMF Buds Pro wireless earbuds will feature Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) of up to 50 dB. Featuring dual audio drivers for improved audio output, the CMF Buds Pro 2 will include a rotating dial on the charging case, referred to by the company as the Smart Dial. CMF Watch Pro 2: Anticipated features and specifications

For the CMF Watch Pro 2, the company has confirmed that the smartwatch will feature an aluminium alloy body and a circular dial. The image shared by the company also suggests that the Watch Pro 2 will have a rotating crown dial on the side for added functionality. Nothing has also recently stated that the Watch Pro 2 will be “customisable in function and design,” suggesting that the smartwatch could have similar customisation options as the CMF Phone 1 with different accessories. Sony ULT Field 1 review: Well-built speaker with decent sound for the price

Sony ULT Field 1 review: Well-built speaker with decent sound for the price

The advent of the smartphone has changed our lives immeasurably, leaving almost no facet of daily life unchanged. From the way we communicate to the way we book tickets, from the way we gather information about the world around us to the way we listen to music, smartphones have made things different and, most will argue, easier. With the help of on-demand music and video streaming services, we now carry entire music or video libraries with us wherever we go.

When it comes to listening to music, this technological shift has brought with it products that make it even more convenient for us to consume the music of our choice. Take portable Bluetooth speakers, for example. If the boombox defined public portable audio in the 1970s and 80s (while the Walkman defined personal portable audio), portable Bluetooth speakers can be called a more evolved version of the boombox.

Portable Bluetooth speakers

The portable Bluetooth speaker combines modern technology with good audio. Higher-end portable speakers offer higher-fidelity sound and smart connectivity solutions like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and Airplay.

Some of the benefits offered by portable Bluetooth speakers are:

  • Wireless connectivity: They connect wirelessly to your devices, eliminating the need for cables and making setup quick and easy.

  • Portability: These speakers are lightweight and compact, allowing you to take them anywhere, whether it’s a park, beach, or a friend’s house.

  • Durability: Many models are designed to be rugged and water-resistant so they can withstand various environments.

  • Battery life: They often come with long-lasting batteries, providing hours of playback on a single charge.

  • Sound quality: Despite their small size, many portable Bluetooth speakers offer impressive sound quality, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

  • Versatility: They can be used for various activities such as social gatherings, camping, workouts, or even just relaxing at home.

Sony and personal audio

The Japanese electronics giant Sony has been a major player in this world for many decades now. It was present during the boombox boom, and its Walkman defined personal portable audio for a really long time. It is no surprise that it also offers products in the portable Bluetooth speakers category now.

Sony’s ULT lineup—the Sony ULT Power Sound series—is the latest addition to personal audio. It features three speakers, the ULT Tower 10, ULT Field 7, and ULT Field 1, and a pair of headphones, ULT Wear.

According to the company, “The ULT Power Sound series is built for music lovers who enjoy powerful deep sound designed to make your heart pulsate.”

The ULT Tower 10 and Field 7 are the larger speakers among the three, while Field 1 is targeted at the regular, portable sound market.

Sony ULT Field 1

The Sony ULT Field 1 is the smallest of the ULT series speakers. It has an MRP of Rs 16,990 but retails for around Rs 10,990 online. Designed for on-the-go use, the Field 1. It is available in four colours: Black, White, Orange, and Forest Grey.

Products in the ULT series carry a ULT button, and pushing this button provides enhanced bass.

Sony ULT Field 1: Features

  • ULT Power Sound for enhanced bass

  • 12 hours of battery life

  • IP67 water and dust resistance

  • Saltwater resistance

  • Built-in mic for hands-free calling

  • Stereo pairing with another Field 1 unit

The Sony ULT Field 1 is a portable Bluetooth speaker with decent sound for the price. The audio quality is modest – even as it provides a well-rounded sound with good definition, it does seem a little lower on bass. If you need to fill a room with some suitable thump, then you will find it missing despite the presence of the ULT button. In this specific case may be a better option is to opt for the bigger Field 7. Nevertheless, the ULT Field 1 is lightweight and portable enough and the company also claims it is a shockproof portable speaker which will survive minor falls as well with its unique design on both the edges. However, the same design is a bit of a dust magnet and on the black colour unit I reviewed, dust accumulation was a put-off.

The battery packs a punch, however, and if used smartly, the speaker can last longer than the claimed 12 hours of battery life. It does not provide a 3.5 mm jack for external input, however.

When it comes to price, the Sony ULT Field 1 finds itself more in the middle of the competition with both cheaper and more expensive options out there in the market. That may work to its advantage. It is a well-built speaker with decent sound for the price. There may be better-sounding portable Bluetooth speakers out there, but then you may need to shell out more for those.

WhatsApp explores personalised AI avatars with new feature development

WhatsApp explores personalised AI avatars with new feature development

WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new feature that will enable users to create personalised AI avatars of themselves.

WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new feature that will enable users to create personalised AI avatars of themselves, capable of being placed in various virtual settings.

According to The Verge, the feature discovered in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.24.14.7 harnesses a combination of user-provided images, text prompts, and Meta’s AI Llama model to generate these custom avatars.

According to the screenshots captured by The Verge, users will have the ability to envision themselves “in any setting, from the forest to outer space.”

The generated images are reportedly reminiscent of those produced by popular AI generators like Lensa AI or Snapchat’s “Dreams” selfie feature.

To generate these personalised avatars, WhatsApp users will initially need to submit photographs of themselves, which will serve as reference images for Meta AI.

Subsequently, users can create their avatars by typing commands such as “Imagine me” followed by a description of the desired setting in Meta AI chat or by using “@Meta AI imagine me…” in other WhatsApp conversations.

This feature is expected to be optional and will require users to manually enable it in WhatsApp settings.

Furthermore, users will have the flexibility to delete the reference images stored in Meta AI settings at any time, ensuring privacy and control over personal data.

Despite its innovative potential, there is no specific timeline for the general availability of this new AI avatar feature. WhatsApp continues to roll out support for its Meta AI chatbot and real-time AI image generation capabilities, particularly in the United States.

Therefore, the launch of the AI avatar feature may be subject to gradual deployment as WhatsApp and Meta navigate the complexities associated with generative AI tools, according to The Verge.

Given previous challenges with generative AI technologies, Meta appears to be adopting a cautious approach to ensure the functionality and security of this upcoming feature.

As development progresses, WhatsApp users can anticipate a new dimension of personalisation and creativity in their messaging experience, facilitated by advanced AI capabilities.

India must lead AI revolution, not just participate, says Amitabh Kant

India must lead AI revolution, not just participate, says Amitabh Kant

India should not just participate but steer the ongoing AI revolution, and mobilise the powerful technology to bring the nation to the forefront of the global stage, the country’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Thursday.

“We’re truly in a unique moment with the ongoing AI revolution. Its relentless advancing capabilities across the board, its increasing adoption by citizens, and most importantly, its potential to redefine the very fabric of industry and society marks this as a transformative era,” the former NITI Aayog CEO said at the Global IndiaAI Summit here.

Citing industry body nasscom, Kant said 70 per cent of Indian startups prioritise AI to drive their growth, thus underscoring the critical role of AI in the startup ecosystem.

“India proudly holds the position of having the second highest number of GitHub AI projects globally, accounting for 19 per cent of worldwide AI projects. this demonstrates a vibrant and active engagement in AI development on an international scale.

“As we embrace this revolution, the question before us is not merely how we can participate but how we can lead the world. It is our opportunity and indeed our responsibility to harness this powerful technology to propel Indian companies to the forefront of the global stage,” he said.

Kant, 68, said this is a moment to redefine what it means to be a leader and demonstrate that Indian startup enterprises are not just participants in this revolution, but are driving it with vigour, and vision.

“For me, strategic integration, AI-led data analytics, core R&D, ethics and governance are critical. Just as the first industrial revolution gave birth to various industries with the introduction of the steam engine, AI has the potential to revolutionise multiple sectors in India,” he said.

Establishing AI integration across sectors like healthcare, logistics, agriculture, and FMCG is akin to laying down the foundational infrastructure of the steam-based power industry, he said.

“In healthcare, AI can significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient care efficiency, directly impacting patient outcome and healthcare delivery,” Kant said.

He went on to elaborate on how AI can help transform logistics by streamlining supply chain operations and said rather than adopting a generalised approach, the key lies in developing customised AI solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of each sector.

To ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of these AI applications, Kant said, it is important to analyse the objectives of enterprises and align them with AI capabilities.

To maintain a competitive edge globally, Indian businesses must fully leverage the stack of AI-driven data, he said.

On the government’s procurement of 10,000 GPUs within the next 18-24 months, Kant said it is a strategic investment that will dramatically boost India’s processing power, aligning its resources with its data generation capabilities.

“It is imperative that Indian enterprises do not merely consume at the frontier of productivity, we must lead it. We are presented with a defining opportunity that arises only once in a generation,” Kant stressed.

The AI revolution confronts us with its own set of challenges, including biases, data security, and ethical use, he said.

Kant further said a proactive approach is essential for shaping a future where AI is trusted and ethical.
