Norway’s Opera One browser has announced a partnership with Google to integrate the Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) models into its Aria browser AI. Additionally, the company will use Google’s large language models (LLMs) for image generation and text-to-voice functionality.

Opera said that it uses a “multi-LLM Composer AI engine” for its Aria AI, which offers access to multiple AI models. The company said that Aria uses the Composer AI engine to process the user’s intent and deploys a specific LLM based on the user’s need. After partnering with Google, Opera’s composer AI engine will also have access to Google’s Gemini AI models which it will be using to fetch real-time data and for new capabilities such as AI-powered image generation and Voice output in Aria.

Commenting on the collaboration, Managing director of Google Cloud in Nordic Region, Eva Fors said, “We’re happy to elevate our long standing cooperation with Opera by powering its AI innovation within the browser space.” Similarly, EVP Partnerships at Opera, Per Wetterdal said that both the companies (Opera and Google) have been cooperating for more than 20 years and it is now deepening with this collaboration in the field of generative AI.

Opera One browser: What’s new

Leveraging the collaboration with Google, Opera’s Aria gains image generation capabilities based on Google’s Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI. For now, the feature is only available on the Opera One Developer release for public testing and the company has not provided details about a stable roll out. However, Opera confirmed that with an upcoming feature drop, Aria AI will be able to read out its generated responses in a natural and conversational tone.

Google pulls down documentation containing parameters for Search ranking

Google pulls down documentation containing parameters for Search ranking

Google has pulled down its documentation, which specified what parameters the company uses for generating and ranking Search results, after accidentally publishing it on GitHub. According to a report by 9To5Google, the American technology giant had published “Google API Content Warehouse” documentation on GitHub platform on March 27 and pulled it back on May 7.

The documentation, reportedly, had information that was meant for the company’s employees and was published accidentally. This “Google API Content Warehouse” had internal API documentation that detailed various components that Google uses to generate Search results for its search engine. The document was reportedly 2,500 pages long and even included details about outdated models, however, it may have included information about the Search system that Google still uses.

The report stated that the document contained data that show the factors that Google Search model takes into consideration when organising the sequence of results on the Search result page for a user’s query. However, it did not reveal the weightage of each factor that determines the Search ranking.

9To5Google also stated that people who are working in the field of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) have complained that the document contradicts the publicly available data on how Google Search works. Google has not yet issued a statement addressing the incident.

Google at its annual developer conference “I/O” announced that it is integrating artificial intelligence into Search with AI overviews. Previously known as Search Generative Experience (SGE), Google’s AI Overviews in Search generates a summary on top of the Search results page, offering a quick overview of the topic along with relevant links to websites. However, the rollout of this new technology has been far from smooth, generating inaccurate summaries and false information.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Ring detail appear on FCC listing: Report

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Ring detail appear on FCC listing: Report

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Ring

Samsung’s next-generation clamshell foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip 6, would get a bigger capacity battery compared to the current generation model. According to a report by The Verge, the 2024 Galaxy Z Flip smartphone has appeared on the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) testing record detailing the smartphone’s battery specifications. Additionally, the report stated that Samsung’s upcoming wearable device, the Galaxy Ring, has appeared on the list, revealing details about the Ring’s sizing and battery details.

According to the report, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has appeared on FCC’s list with a 3,790mAh battery capacity. This suggests that the next-generation flip phone by Samsung will feature a slightly bigger battery than the current generation model that features a 3,700mAh battery. It is not known if this increase in battery capacity will bring more battery life to the smartphone but this is in contradiction to previous reports that claimed that the upcoming model might get a significant battery boost with a 4,000mAh battery.

As for the Galaxy Ring, the report stated that the upcoming wearable device from Samsung would be offered in sizes varying from size 5 to size 12. Additionally, the report stated that the size of the ring would determine the battery size each ring will pack. As per the report, on FCC’s listing Samsung Galaxy Ring appeared with battery capacity ranging from 17mAh to 22mAh.

Last week, Android Authority reported that Samsung could price the upcoming Galaxy Ring at around $300-$350 in the US and around Rs 35,000 in India. If true, this will put the maiden device in Samsung’s new wearable line in the same price bracket as the company’s Galaxy Watch lineup.

Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy Z-series foldable smartphones are expected to launch alongside the upcoming Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch 7 series at the next Galaxy Unpacked event – possibly sometime in July.

Disruptive attacks doubled, Russia behind many: Europe's cybersecurity exec

Disruptive attacks doubled, Russia behind many: Europe's cybersecurity exec

Disruptive digital attacks, many of which have been traced to Russia-backed groups, have doubled in the European Union in recent months and are also targeting election-related services, according to the EU’s top cybersecurity official.

Juhan Lepassaar, head of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, or ENISA, told The Associated Press in an interview that attacks with geopolitical motives have steadily risen since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

The number of hacktivist attacks (against) European infrastructure threat actors whose main aim is to cause disruption has doubled from the fourth quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024, Lepassaar said late Tuesday at the agency’s headquarters in Athens.

It’s quite a significant increase,” he said.

Citizens from the EU’s 27 member states will vote June 6-9 for lawmakers in the European Parliament in an election that will also shape the EU’s executive branch, the European Commission. Elections, also due in the United States, Britain and multiple other countries, have alerted security agencies to the threat of disruption campaigns funded by adversaries.

ENISA has led exercises and intense consultations to harden the resilience of election-related agencies in the EU for the past seven months. In an annual report for 2023, the agency noted a surge in ransomware attacks and incidents targeting public institutions.

Lepassaar said that attack methods while mostly unsuccessful were often tried out in Ukraine before being expanded to EU countries.

This is part of the Russian war of aggression, which they fight physically in Ukraine, but digitally also across Europe, he said.

Experts warn that artificial intelligence tools are also being used to target Western voters at accelerating speed and scale with misleading or false information, including hyperrealistic video and audio clips known as deepfakes.

It’s been emphasized, also by member states’ cybersecurity agencies, that AI-enabled disinformation and information manipulation is a big threat, Lepassaar said.

His comments echo a warning made this month by US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines that technological progress will make more nations and groups able to launch effective disinformation campaigns.

US and European experts are helping security agencies to try and anticipate emerging digital threats and vulnerabilities over this decade, with ENISA identifying food production, satellite management and self-driving vehicles as areas requiring attention.

Cybersecurity, Lepassaar argues, will inevitably need to become second nature to designers and consumers.

I do believe that we have a societal challenge ahead of us to understand digital security in the same way that we understand, security in the everyday traffic environment, he said.

When we are driving, we are aware of what is going on around us. We are alert, he said. The same kind of behaviors and habits are what we need to also instill when we operate in any kind of a digital environment.
