Google's Chromebook Plus gets big AI boost to rival Copilot Plus PCs

Google's Chromebook Plus gets big AI boost to rival Copilot Plus PCs

Google Magic Editor on Chromebook Plus

Google has announced artificial intelligence and gaming features for Chromebook Plus to rival Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs. Google said that Chromebook Plus laptops will now come with built-in Gemini-powered AI features such as help me write, AI-generated wallpapers, and Magic Editor in Google Photos app. Devices based on Google’s Chromebook platform also get new features such as simplified sync with Android smartphones, new Game dashboard, and more. Below are the details:

Google AI on Chromebook Plus: What’s new

Help me write: Using the integrated help me write feature, Chromebook Plus users can now leverage Gemini AI to get writing suggestions or generate new text from scratch using text prompt. Help me write feature can rewrite existing text or can modify it to make it more formal, shorter and more. The functionality can be used with locally stored documents such as PDF forms, with websites, and even web apps.

AI wallpapers and call background: Google brings Pixel-like AI-generated wallpapers to Chromebook Plus. The feature has multiple customisable text prompts based on themes that the user can use to generate a unique and personalised wallpaper or background for video calls.

Magic Editor: Chromebook Plus devices will have AI-powered Magic Editor built-in to the Google Photos app. Users can select a picture and tap on the Magic Editor button to enhance it. The feature also allows the user to remove an object or reposition it within a picture.

Gemini App will come pre-installed on Chromebook Plus devices and will be available on the home screen for quick access. Additionally, the company is offering Google One AI Premium plan at no additional cost to new Chromebook Plus users for 12 months. The Google One AI Premium subscription includes access to Google’s Gemini Advanced model, 2TB of cloud storage and Gemini integration into workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more.

Chromebook: New features

While Chromebook Plus devices are getting AI integration, Google is adding new features to Chrombooks as well. One of the notable new features on Chromebook is the new Game Dashboard, which it said will allow users to map game controls so that games could work in coordination with the keyboard. Other notable changes include saving a screen recording in GIF format and initiating device set-up using an Android phone.

Tech giants working closely on AI compliance, says top EU's data regulator

Tech giants working closely on AI compliance, says top EU's data regulator

Regulators need to decide whether companies should be allowed to trawl the internet for public data to train AI models, and on what legal basis personal data can be used | File image

The world’s leading internet firms are engaging extensively with regulators in the European Union to ensure their artificial-intelligence products do not fall foul of the bloc’s strict data protection rules, Ireland’s powerful data regulator said.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, lead EU regulator for Alphabet’s Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok and OpenAI, among others, said that its broad powers had not yet been tested on AI and it could in future force changes to business models to ensure data privacy is protected.

AI creates a number of potential issues for data privacy, the two top officials at Ireland’s Data Protection Commission said in an interview on Tuesday.

Regulators need to decide whether companies should be allowed to trawl the internet for public data to train AI models, and on what legal basis personal data can be used.

AI operators also need to explain they can ensure individuals’ data rights, including the right to erase their data. The risk of AI models giving incorrect personal data about individuals must also be addressed, the Irish officials said.

“There has been extensive engagement” from leading U.S. tech firms including Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and OpenAI, said Dale Sunderland, one of the Irish regulator’s two Data Protection Commissioners.

“They’re seeking our views on some of their new products in the AI space, particularly the large language model space.” Google agreed to delay and make changes to its Gemini AI chatbot following consultations with the Irish regulator, he said.

While Ireland is the lead regulator for most of the top U.S. internet firms due to the location of their EU head offices in the country, other regulators can have a say in decisions via the European Data Protection Board, which is currently working on guidance on how AI should operate under EU data protection law, he said.

AI model operators from next month will have to comply with the EU’s landmark new AI Act. But they will also have to comply with the bloc’s key data protection law, the General Data Protection Regulation, which can impose fines of up to 4% of a firm’s total global turnover.

“The power of national regulators, including us, is quite broad,” said Des Hogan, Ireland’s other Data Protection Commissioner and chair of the commission.

“If they haven’t done proper due diligence around the impacts of new products or services … they run that risk of having to change the design downstream.”

AI Chipmaker Nvidia's market value at .8 trn, surges closer to Apple

AI Chipmaker Nvidia's market value at $2.8 trn, surges closer to Apple

The company’s shares have more than doubled so far this year after more than tripling last year | File image

Nvidia’s shares rallied around 6 per cent to hit a record high on Tuesday, leaving the AI chipmaker’s stock market value about $100 billion away from overtaking Apple in a major reshuffle of Wall street’s biggest players.

Last trading at $1,128, Nvidia’s market capitalisation reached $2.8 trillion, compared to a market value of $2.9 trillion for Apple, which is Wall Street’s second-most valuable company after Microsoft.

Its stock surged as much as 8 per cent to $1,149.39 during the session, an intra-day record high. Apple’s stock was down 0.2 per cent in afternoon trading.

Nvidia’s shares have surged nearly 13 per cent since it forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations last week and announced a stock split, which excited investors as they continue to bet on the AI poster child.

“The market has been struggling to keep up with the company’s ever improving growth trajectory. At a mid-thirties forward earnings multiple, this still doesn’t feel like bubble territory,” said Derren Nathan, head of equity analysis at Hargreaves Lansdown.

Nvidia recently traded at 36 times its forward profit estimates, compared with 38 for Advanced Micro Devices and 21 for Intel, according to LSEG data.

The company’s shares have more than doubled so far this year after more than tripling last year.

Nvidia, which has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, reported a five-fold jump in revenue at its data center segment last week as customers line up for their high-performance chips.

Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon.com and other technology companies have been competing for a limited supply of Nvidia’s high-end chips as they race to dominate AI computing.

“Business is doing incredibly well, there are so many opportunities to keep growing, and the AI theme still has legs.

When the song is that catchy, investors want to keep humming it all day long, said Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell when asked about the stock’s rally.

Long considered a must-own stock on Wall Street, Apple has underperformed other Big Tech companies in recent months, falling around 2 per cent this year as it struggles with weak iPhone demand and tough competition in China.

Microsoft overtook Apple as the world’s most valuable company earlier this year as it raced ahead of other tech firms due to gains made by early investments in artificial intelligence across its cloud services.

Microsoft’s shares were down 0.4 per cent on Tuesday, giving it a market value of $3.1 trillion.

Apple has also been slower in rolling out generative AI, which can generate human-like responses to written prompts, than rivals such as Microsoft and Google, which are weaving them into products.
