Google to let users share passwords with family group: Here's how it works

Google to let users share passwords with family group: Here's how it works

With its May 2024 update, Google is letting users share passwords with the members of their own family, making it easier for everyone in the household to access passwords for shared services. The feature will be available once the users download the latest version of the Google Play Services from the store.

This feature is accessible for anyone who has a Google account. Google’s password manager is available on mobile, desktop and Macs and works through Chrome browser.

The only requisite for this feature is to have a family group set up with Google and details will be shared with only them. This feature can only be used for people who are part of the family group and they will receive a copy of the password in their Google Password Manager. In comparison to the usual password sharing function, this is a safer feature as the details are being shared exclusively with the family group which currently allows up to 6 members only.

Here is how to use the feature:

  • To access Password Manager, tap the three dots in the top right corner on Chrome app.

  • Select settings and then select passwords

  • Google will ask if you want to share a copy of your password.  Once selected, a share   sheet will display the names of family members accompanied by their profile images.

  • You can choose the name you want to share the password with and tap the share button.

  • This will allow family members to automatically fill the details when they use Password manager and gain access to the account.

  • This feature is currently working in beta  for select users, as reported by Financial Express and is not available for the desktop version of Chrome.

Nothing Phone 2a to come with new colour options on May 29, teaser reveals

Nothing Phone 2a to come with new colour options on May 29, teaser reveals

Nothing Phone 2(a) Blue colour

The British consumer technology brand Nothing is likely unveiling new colour variants of the Phone 2a on May 29. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the company shared a teaser image that shows the elements such as the rear camera module in Blue, Red and Yellow colours along with the text “Something special. Tomorrow.”

Nothing has already released a Blue coloured variant of the Phone 2a which is exclusive to the Indian market. The post suggests that the company could now release a Yellow and a Red-coloured variant of the Phone 2a while making the Blue-coloured model available in more regions. It is also entirely possible that Nothing launches only a single variant featuring Blue, Red and Yellow coloured elements within the transparent back panel of the smartphone. While there could be a new colour option for the Nothing Phone 2a launching on May 29, it is unlikely that the smartphone will get any changes in specifications.

Nothing has stuck to standard White and Black colours for its products until it launched a Blue-coloured Phone 2a model and a Yellow-coloured Nothing Ear (a) wireless earbuds earlier this year. This also suggests that Nothing is opting for a wider colour palette for its more affordable a-series products.

Nothing Phone 2a: Specifications

Google, Amazon, Apple lobby group opposes India's antitrust proposal

Google, Amazon, Apple lobby group opposes India's antitrust proposal

A US lobby group representing tech giants Google, Amazon and Apple has asked India to rethink its proposed EU-like competition law, arguing regulations against data use and preferential treatment of partners could raise user costs, a letter shows.

Citing increasing market power of a few big digital companies in India, a government panel in February proposed imposing obligations on them under a new antitrust law which will complement existing regulations whose enforcement the panel said is “time-consuming”.

India’s “Digital Competition Bill” is on the lines of EU’s landmark Digital Markets Act 2022. It will apply to big firms, including those with a global turnover of over $30 billion and whose digital services have at least 10 million users locally, bringing some of the world’s biggest tech firms under its ambit.

It proposes to prohibit companies from exploiting non-public data of its users and promoting their own services over rivals, and also abolish restrictions on downloading of third-party apps.

Companies deploy these strategies to launch new product features and boost security for users, and curbing them will hit their plans, the US-India Business Council (USIBC), part of the US Chamber of Commerce, said in a May 15 letter to India’s Corporate Affairs Ministry, which is working on the law.

The draft Indian law is “much further in scope” than the EU’s, says the letter, which has not been made public but was seen by Reuters.

“Targeted companies are likely to reduce investment in India, pass on increased prices for digital services, and reduce the range of services,” it says.

The USIBC, which has asked India to reconsider the planned law, did not respond to Reuters queries, and neither did the Corporate Affairs Ministry, Apple, Amazon or Google.

With a population of 1.4 billion people and a growing affluent class, India is a lucrative market for big tech companies. Apple CEO Tim Cook said this month the company posted a “revenue record” in India during the March quarter, when its overall global revenue declined 4 per cent.

The Indian panel says the new law is needed as a few large digital enterprises “wield immense control over the market”. As in the EU, it is recommending a penalty of up to 10 per cent of a company’s annual global turnover for violations.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has for years been investigating big tech firms.

The CCI in 2022 fined Google $161 million, ordering it to stop restricting users from removing its pre-installed apps and allow downloads without using its app store. Google denies wrongdoing and says such restrictions boost user security.

Amazon is also facing an antitrust investigation for favouring select sellers on its India website, an allegation it denies. Apple, too, denies allegations but faces an investigation for alleged abuse of its dominant position in the apps market.

A group of 40 Indian startups, though, has come out in support of the new Indian law, saying it can help address monopolistic practices of dominant digital platforms and create a level playing field for smaller companies.

There is no fixed timeline, but the Indian government will next review feedback on the proposal before seeking parliament approval with or without changes.

Google Pixel 8a review: An all-round smartphone set back by thermal issues

Google Pixel 8a review: An all-round smartphone set back by thermal issues

Pixel 8a is here and the smartphone ticks most boxes anticipated from it ahead of the launch. What is not in line with the expectation, however, is pricing. At Rs 52,999 onwards, the smartphone shares space with some of the flagship smartphones from Chinese brands. What goes in favour of the smartphone is imaging system backed by Google’s computational photography algorithms and artificial intelligence features. Moreover, the Pixel 8a boasts premium construction, water-and-dust ingress protection, and wireless charging. That said, is the Pixel 8a expensive or the “a” moniker here sets the wrong expectation? Let us find out:

Design

The Pixel 8a is a compact smartphone with design inspired from other Pixel 8 series models. The smartphone has rounded corners, frosted glass on the back cover, and Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the front.

The phone’s aluminium frame has a subtle curve to it that matches with the overall design language and makes the phone comfortable to hold and operate. The frame accommodates volume rockers and power button on the right side, but the buttons arrangement is inverted – power button sits on top of volume rocker – and that causes inconvenience, at least for initial few days. For context, most other Android smartphones feature volume buttons first followed by power buttons. Nevertheless, these buttons are easily reachable with thumb or index finger. Like the last year model, the Pixel 8a is IP67-rated for water and dust resistance.

Display and Sound

Google has enhanced the display with notable upgrades. While the size remains identical to the last year model, at 6.1-inch, the display is brighter and supports refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Therefore, the display delivers optimal sunlight legibility, better contrast, and smooth performance.

However, the display is flanked by thick and unsymmetrical bezels. Even if you ignore the bezels, the display is no match to what you get on competing smartphones simply because it is a generic one with no value add-ons such as support for Dolby Vision. Moreover, the display is not well-suited for gaming due to lack of features such as frame interpolation, content upscaling, and HDR support.

The generic nature of the smartphone extends to audio, too. There are stereo speakers, which are loud and balanced, but lacks depth. There is support for spatial audio, which works with select Google wireless earphones such as Pixel Buds Pro. But the smartphone lacks support for Dolby Atmos and Hi-res audio over wireless, both of which are common on smartphones in the segment from competing brands.

Camera

The Pixel 8a carries over the predecessor’s camera system, which comprises a dual-camera set-up on the back – a 64-megapixel main sensor with optical image stabilisation and 13MP ultra-wide-angle sensor – and a 13MP camera sensor on the front. The camera interface, however, is new with options to manually control brightness, shadow, and white balance.

As for the imaging performance, the Pixel 8a impresses with quick focus and fast shutter speed. Moreover, the phone is quick in processing images post capture with computational algorithms. However, since imaging performance is heavily reliant on computational algorithms, there is a stark difference in the image previews shown on screen before the capture and the final output. Nevertheless, both the main and ultra-wide angle cameras are good.

The main camera sensor impresses with natural colours and good dynamic range. The sensor manages to capture natural depth-of-field with fine details on contours that neatly separates the subject from the background. The megapixel-rich camera sensor supports in-sensor zoom at up to 2x magnification level. It works well and is available for portraits too. Like the primary sensor, the ultra-wide-angle camera sensor is good with colours, dynamic range, and details. It covers a wide 120-degree field of view, suitable for cityscapes and landscapes. However, it does not flat out the sides, making it less suitable for group photos. The front camera is as good, if not better.

As for the videos, there is support for 4K at 30fps across camera sensors – including front camera. The primary camera sensor, however, goes up to 4K at 60fps. Video quality is good with modest stabilisation to counter shakes, especially from the primary camera.

Artificial intelligence features

Based on Android 14, the Pixel 8a comes packed with features, including select artificial intelligence features that Google debuted with Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Among the notable additions are the gesture-drive Circle to Search and Gemini AI. Circle to Search is enabled by default and gets into action if you long press the home button (in 3-button navigation) or navigation handle (in gesture navigation). Gemini AI, however, is offered as an opt-in feature since it is in experimental phase.

For imaging, the Pixel 8a gets “Best Take”, “Magic Editor” and “Audio Magic Eraser”. These are generative edit features available through edit option in the Google Photos app. Best Take employs an on-device algorithm to create a composite image from a series of photos, ensuring that everyone in the frame appears at their best. On the other hand, Magic Editor allows users to customise photos by repositioning and resizing subjects in the frame or enhancing the background with a simple tap. For videos, the Audio Magic Eraser tool identifies sounds within videos, such as background conversations, music, or wind, and separates them into distinct layers that users can control. This tool enables the reduction of distracting noises, granting users the ability to achieve their desired audio quality. Similar to the AI tools for photos, the Audio Magic Eraser feature is accessible within the Photos app.

Performance

Powered by the Tensor G3 chip, the Pixel 8a delivers good but inconsistent performance. The phone handles routine everyday tasks well but randomly heats up, resulting in performance degradation. Surprisingly, the phone heats up even in standby mode (locked and not in use). This issue does not appear to be tied to specific usage patterns; the phone may warm up even when not actively used. Under heavy workloads, the phone operates smoothly as long as temperature levels remain in check. These occurrences suggest that the phone possesses substantial capability, but random thermal fluctuations can impact performance.

Battery

The Pixel 8a offers respectable battery life. Under optimal thermal conditions, the phone comfortably lasts a day of mixed usage. In terms of screen-on time, the battery lasts for about six hours in typical scenarios. However, the battery life is vulnerable to thermal fluctuations and resource-intensive tasks, such as recording 4K videos at 60 frames per second. Hence, it is advisable to keep a charger on hand to counter abrupt battery drain resulting from unpredictable thermal issues.

It is important to note that the Pixel 8a does not include a charging adaptor in the package. Moreover, charging is capped at 18W (wired), taking about two hours for the phone to charge fully. Wireless charging is supported, but it is very slow.

Verdict

Software and imaging are core strengths of Google smartphones, and the Pixel 8a excels in these areas. However, it is marred by thermal issues that hamper the overall experience. Moreover, slow battery charging is a significant drawback. The Pixel 8a is on the expensive side of the price spectrum, especially considering that competitors offer better packages at the same or lower prices.

Apple's iPhone shipments in China rise 52% as rebound gains steam

Apple's iPhone shipments in China rise 52% as rebound gains steam

By Gao Yuan

Apple Inc.’s iPhone staged a rebound in China last month with shipments rising 52 per cent amid a flurry of discounts from retail partners.

The latest figures from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed smartphone shipments surging in the country, of which roughly 3.5 million units came from foreign brands, according to a Bloomberg calculation.

The iPhone accounts for the vast majority of such devices, and its rapid bounceback comes after it registered growth in March following steep declines in the first two months of the year.

Apple and its Chinese resellers have been cutting prices since the start of 2024, and those deals are extending into the sale season that accompanies the June 18th shopping festival in the country. Cupertino, California-based Apple had seen double-digit declines in sales of its latest generation of handsets, as it lost premium market share to Huawei Technologies Co.

The iPhone’s slide in China may be coming to an end, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts, as consumers expressed a higher interest in upgrading to new devices in a recent poll.

“The iPhone’s shrinking China market share could stabilize soon, as our latest survey shows Apple’s comeback as Chinese consumers’ favorite smartphone brand after being displaced by Huawei,” analysts Steven Tseng and Sean Chen wrote.

“We believe the reversal in user interest could be due to the premiumization trend in China, amplified by consumer fatigue after long waiting times for Huawei’s premium models,” they wrote. “More than half of survey respondents say they’re willing to spend more than 4,000 yuan ($550) on their next phone vs. just 33 per cent who currently use premium handsets.”
