Apple's iPhone shipments in China rise 52% as rebound gains steam

Apple's iPhone shipments in China rise 52% as rebound gains steam

By Gao Yuan

Apple Inc.’s iPhone staged a rebound in China last month with shipments rising 52 per cent amid a flurry of discounts from retail partners.

The latest figures from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed smartphone shipments surging in the country, of which roughly 3.5 million units came from foreign brands, according to a Bloomberg calculation.

The iPhone accounts for the vast majority of such devices, and its rapid bounceback comes after it registered growth in March following steep declines in the first two months of the year.

Apple and its Chinese resellers have been cutting prices since the start of 2024, and those deals are extending into the sale season that accompanies the June 18th shopping festival in the country. Cupertino, California-based Apple had seen double-digit declines in sales of its latest generation of handsets, as it lost premium market share to Huawei Technologies Co.

The iPhone’s slide in China may be coming to an end, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts, as consumers expressed a higher interest in upgrading to new devices in a recent poll.

“The iPhone’s shrinking China market share could stabilize soon, as our latest survey shows Apple’s comeback as Chinese consumers’ favorite smartphone brand after being displaced by Huawei,” analysts Steven Tseng and Sean Chen wrote.

“We believe the reversal in user interest could be due to the premiumization trend in China, amplified by consumer fatigue after long waiting times for Huawei’s premium models,” they wrote. “More than half of survey respondents say they’re willing to spend more than 4,000 yuan ($550) on their next phone vs. just 33 per cent who currently use premium handsets.”

Soon, Netflix could remove 'download videos' option on Windows app: Details

Soon, Netflix could remove 'download videos' option on Windows app: Details

Video streaming platform Netflix could soon end support for watching content offline on its app for Windows. Citing multiple posts on X (formerly Twitter), Android Authority has reported that Netflix has started notifying Windows users about the change, which is expected to roll out with a new forthcoming update.

As per the report, a few users have posted screenshots of the Netflix pop-up notification on the social media platform X that states “Downloads will no longer be supported” on the Windows app for Netflix. Additionally, the notification stated that downloaded content for offline viewing will still be available on a “supported mobile device.” Other changes listed in the notification includes, access to live events and compatibility with ad-supported subscription plans.

The report stated that a similar notification has appeared for other users as well but the part about discontinuation of offline viewing is missing. This suggests that Netflix might end the feature in select regions or will limit downloading content to its more premium plans. Netflix has not officially commented on the changes coming with the new Windows app update and it is entirely possible that the platform ends up keeping the offline viewing feature the way it is.

Earlier this month, Netflix announced that its ad-supported subscription has crossed 40 million global monthly active users which is a significant increase from last year where it had five million active users for the plan. Netflix, which launched the ad-supported plan in November 2022 in select countries, has expanded it to more regions to attract new users with more affordable subscription fees. However, Netflix is yet to bring its ad-supported subscription plan to India.

Over 82% Indians oppose GenAI use in poll campaigns, says Adobe study

Over 82% Indians oppose GenAI use in poll campaigns, says Adobe study

More than 82 per cent Indians say candidates contesting elections should be prohibited from using generative AI in their promotional campaigns, said an Adobe study.

According to the ‘Future of Trust’ report by Adobe released on Monday, about 94 per cent Indians want government and technology companies to work together to protect election integrity against the harmful effects of deep fakes and misinformation.

“One of the most immediate steps governments should take to protect election integrity is to promote a new type of media literacy. People need to understand the dangers of deep fakes and know how to use tools available today, like content credentials, to avoid being deceived by them,” said Andy Parsons, senior director, Content Authenticity Initiative, Adobe.

“We also need to move quickly to a world where it’s second nature for good actors to attach content credentials to their work, and for people to be aware of content credentials when consuming online content,” Parsons added.

The study, which surveyed over 2,000 Indians about their experience encountering misinformation online and concerns about the impact of generative AI, found that over 92 per cent of people felt the need for having the right tools to verify the trustworthiness of online content.

Further, about 86 per cent Indians felt that misinformation and harmful deepfakes will impact future elections.

A high percentage of Indians, around 93 per cent, agreed that it was important to know if the content they are consuming is generated using AI.

About 81 per cent participants submitted to having a fear that the content they consume online could be altered to fuel misinformation.

Further, around 94 per cent also said that children should be taught media literacy skills as part of their school curriculum to tackle the issues pertaining to AI-enabled misinformation.

“Concerns about misinformation are also impacting consumer’s use of social media platforms with 45 per cent Indians saying that they have stopped or curtailed their use of a specific social media platform due to the amount of misinformation on it,” said the report.

Adobe collaborated with research firm – Advanis to gather responses from 2,056 Indian residents aged 18 and older. Data was collected from an opt-in non-probability sample provider in March, said the company.
