YouTube tests 'Hype' feature with small creators: What is it, how it works

YouTube tests 'Hype' feature with small creators: What is it, how it works

Google’s video streaming platform YouTube is testing a new “Hype” feature in select countries. It essentially allows viewers to increase the possibility of a video appearing in the rankings with other hyped videos that week. YouTube has titled the announcement about the testing of the feature as “New way for viewers to support their favourite creators.”

YouTube has noted on its support page that Hype is similar to the Like and Share function that it already has. The official announcement also states that Hypes are not used as an indicator for YouTube’s reach and discovery system.

The feature is mainly aimed to help small creators to be discovered by new viewers and help them receive support from the community. The testing of the feature is allowed for only a subset of YouTube Partner Program content creators who follow the community guidelines and have less than 500,000 subscribers.

Hyped videos are displayed in the “Explore” section and not the trending section. Moreover, viewers can only hype videos published in the last seven days.

The new feature is being experimented in Brazil, Taiwan and Turkey and it is unclear whether it is a paid feature. YouTube has said that it will collect feedback and learn if and how the feature will be expanded to other people in upcoming days.

Previously, YouTube had announced that it is experimenting with a feature that will let users add context to videos in the form of notes. This will help provide relevant information to others for clarification. This arrives in addition to other context prioritising features that YouTube has introduced recently such as information panels and additional requirements for disclosing synthetic or altered content.

Apple rolls out iOS 18 developer beta 2: New features and eligible iPhones

Apple rolls out iOS 18 developer beta 2: New features and eligible iPhones

Apple rolls out iOS 18 developer beta 2

Apple has released iOS 18 developer beta 2 for eligible iPhones, introducing several new features and improvements. Key additions include iPhone Mirroring on compatible Macs, SharePlay screen sharing, a dark mode icon for the App Store, and a multi-language keyboard. Notably, in certain regions, the update also introduces support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the Messages app.

iOS 18 developer beta 2: What is new

iPhone Mirroring

iPhone Mirroring allows users to display their iPhone screen on supported Mac computers. This feature enables seamless interaction between devices, including receiving notifications and utilising drag-and-drop functionality without unlocking the iPhone.

Enhanced SharePlay

SharePlay screen sharing enhances collaboration by enabling users to draw on and control others’ screens during shared sessions, facilitating effective communication and cooperation.

App Store

The App Store now features a dark mode icon, aligning with the system-wide aesthetic preferences of iOS.

Multi-language keyboard

The multi-language keyboard update expands support to handle up to three languages simultaneously, offering a selection of 27 Indian languages including English (India), Hindi, Assamese, Bangla, and Urdu.

RCS messaging

While RCS messaging support is included in this beta, it is not yet available in India.

Things to keep in mind before downloading

Developer betas are used by developers to check their apps on the upcoming operating system and to report bugs. Since the bugs are removed after the testing, you might face unexpected crashing on the phone or it might prevent you from using some apps in addition to other issues that you might face, hence Developer beta should be downloaded with caution. You can also sign up for a more stable public beta for iOS 18, which will be released later in the month or in July.

iOS 18 developer beta 2: How to download and install

Apple rejected idea of iPhone AI partnership with Meta months ago

Apple rejected idea of iPhone AI partnership with Meta months ago

Apple Inc. rejected overtures by Meta Platforms Inc. to integrate the social networking company’s AI chatbot into the iPhone months ago, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The two companies aren’t in discussions about using Meta’s Llama chatbot in an AI partnership and only held brief talks in March, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the situation is private. The dialogue about a partnership didn’t reach any formal stage, and Apple has no active plans to integrate Llama.

The preliminary talks occurred around the time Apple started hashing out deals to use OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet Inc.’s Gemini in its products. The iPhone maker announced the ChatGPT agreement earlier this month and said it was expecting to offer Gemini in the future.

Apple decided not to move forward with formal Meta discussions in part because it doesn’t see that company’s privacy practices as stringent enough, according to the people. Apple has spent years criticizing Meta’s technology, and integrating Llama into the iPhone would have been a stark about-face.

Apple also sees ChatGPT as a superior offering. Google, meanwhile, is already a partner for search in Apple’s Safari web browser, so a future Gemini deal would build on that relationship.

Spokespeople for Apple and Meta declined to comment. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that the two companies were in talks about an AI partnership.

Apple unveiled a suite of artificial intelligence features at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10. The new technology — called Apple Intelligence — includes homegrown tools for summarizing notifications, transcribing voice memos and generating custom emoji.

But Apple’s chatbot technology isn’t as advanced as that of rivals, prompting it to seek out partners. The company also believes that customers will want the ability to switch between different chatbots depending on their needs, similar to how they might hop between Google and Microsoft Corp.’s Bing for searches.

Apple continues to talk to AI startup Anthropic about eventually adding that company’s chatbot as an option, the people said. Apple Intelligence will begin rolling out later this year as part of operating systems for the iPhone, iPad and Mac.

The current deal with OpenAI doesn’t involve money swapping hands, but Apple will allow paying ChatGPT customers to access their subscriptions within the iOS operating system. That could generate revenue for OpenAI, a percentage of which could be headed to Apple in the form of App Store commissions.

Meta and Apple were on friendlier terms a decade ago, when the iPhone maker was integrating Facebook into iOS. But the companies have become fierce rivals in recent years, competing over AI, home devices and mixed-reality headsets.

Cyberattack compromised data centre; won't pay mn ransom: Indonesia

Cyberattack compromised data centre; won't pay $8 mn ransom: Indonesia

The attackers have held data hostage and offered a key for access in return for the $8 million ransom, said PT Telkom Indonesia’s director of network & IT solutions, Herlan Wijanarko, without giving further details.

Indonesia’s national data centre has been compromised by a hacking group asking for a $8 million ransom that the government won’t pay, authorities said Monday.

The cyberattack has disrupted services of more than 200 government agencies at both the national and regional levels since June 20, said Samuel Abrijani Pangerapan, the director general of informatics applications with the Communications and Informatics Ministry.

Some government services have returned immigration services at airports and elsewhere are now functional but efforts continue at restoring other services such as investment licensing, Pangerapan told reporters.

The attackers have held data hostage and offered a key for access in return for the $8 million ransom, said PT Telkom Indonesia’s director of network & IT solutions, Herlan Wijanarko, without giving further details.

Wijanarko said the company, in collaboration with authorities at home and abroad, is investigating and trying to break the encryption that made data inaccessible.

Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi told journalists that the government won’t pay the ransom.

We have tried our best to carry out recovery while the (National Cyber and Crypto Agency) is currently carrying out forensics, Setiadi added.

The head of that agency, Hinsa Siburian, said they had detected samples of the Lockbit 3.0 ransomware.
