Summer break: Chargers to docks, these gadgets make remote work life easier

Summer break: Chargers to docks, these gadgets make remote work life easier

My workspace, both at home and in the office, is well-organised, allowing me to focus on the job with minimal distractions. Naturally, one cannot expect the same level of comfort in external environments, but certain gadgets can help maintain productivity on the go. These include a power strip, a universal charging adaptor with multiple power outlets, a connectivity dock with various ports, and external storage devices. Let us find out how each of these contributes to maximising productivity while travelling.

Power strips and charging adaptors

Keeping all your devices charged is essentially one of the most challenging tasks while travelling. This is despite the availability of power outlets at most public places and public transport system because most of them are usually occupied. And even if there is a power socket available, you cannot use it to charge multiple devices until you have the right tools available. These tools could be a power strip or a multi-port charging adaptor with support for fast charging.

A power strip is essential for managing multiple electronic devices simultaneously. It ensures that you can charge and use several gadgets without searching for additional outlets, which is particularly useful in places with limited electrical access.

Consider charging adaptors with multi-ports option if you need a power accessory that is compact and portable. Important to note, charging adaptors only have USB ports (USB-A and USB-C) and no power sockets. Therefore, these can be used to power up or charge multiple devices simultaneously as long the source devices support USB interface-based charging.

While the above listed power strips and multi-port charging adaptors get your power and charging requirements covered during domestic travels, these may not be ideal to travel with on international destination simply because there are different sockets and plugs used in different regions. This is where universal charging adaptors come in to play

A universal charging adaptor with multiple power-out ports allows you to connect to different types of sockets and charge multiple devices simultaneously, ensuring you remain powered up regardless of location.

Dock stations and cables

Dock stations are the solution to expand connectivity options on laptops with limited ports. For example, if your laptop or MacBook has limited ports, say just two USB-C ports, you can use one of the available ports to connect the dock station with USB-C interface and then use the dock station to connect multiple peripherals such as keyboard and mouse, external monitor, microSD card, storage devices, and more.

It is important to check the interface support on the dock station and source device because a mismatch could directly influence experience. For example, a dock station with interface based on Thunderbolt 3 specifications will work best only if there is a Thunderbolt 3 port on the laptop. It will work as good when connected to Thunderbolt 4 port, but not so with USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface. That said, it is convenient to consider a dock station that is not tied to one particular interface type. However, such dock stations come at a premium.

Dock stations expand connectivity options, but you would also need supporting cables to get the most from them. Therefore, like the interface on the dock station and source device, it is important to pay attention to cable type. For example, an HDMI 1.4 cable can transmit 4K resolution video signals but only in standard dynamic range (SDR) and at 30Hz. Likewise, a USB-C or USB-A type cable based on USB 2.0 standard will connect and work with the dock, but deliver slow data transfer speed even if the dock station supports higher data transfer rate.

External storage devices

Data protection and storage is crucial, especially in work-from-remote scenario where you neither have access to encrypted data storage server nor the experienced information technology staff to help you recover lost data in time – if you unknowingly get yourself in such a situation. Since it is not always easy to get internet connection on-the-go, it is important to keep files backed up on a physical storage device like thumb drive or a solid-state drive.

Twitter has officially moved over to 'X' domain, confirms Elon Musk

Twitter has officially moved over to 'X' domain, confirms Elon Musk

Image posted by Elon Musk on X

Twitter has moved over to X domain. The move followed brand renaming exercise, which happened in July 2023 soon after Elon Musk took over as CEO of the social media platform. Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to X in July 2023, but Twitter domain remained in service since switching domain has not been as easy going as the logo switch. Now, however, Elon Musk has confirmed on X that all core systems of the platform have been moved over to “X.com”.

Now, if you land on the login page of X, there is a new notification that pops-up stating “We are letting you know that we are changing our URL, but your privacy and data protection settings remain the same.”

However, there are still instances where visiting Twitter does not redirect the URL to X but opens the landing page of the platform.  That said, the transition to X domain seems to be happening in a staggered manner. It is expected that the domain will soon reflect X for all.

For context, Elon Musk bought the social media platform Twitter in 2022. He later rebranded the platform to X in July 2023. While the blue bird logo was replaced with “X”, domain shift has not happened until today due to technical complications associated with it.

As per media reports, the URL for the social media platform started to change in August last year. However, there was a switching back and forth between new and old domains.

With Elon Musk now officially stating that the system has completely transitioned to X domain, the platform might stop showing under the old Twitter domain in the coming days.

Google Project Gameface: What is it, who is it for, and how does it work

Google Project Gameface: What is it, who is it for, and how does it work

Google’s Project Gameface

Announced earlier this month, Google’s Project Gameface is coming to Android. It is an open-source hands-free gaming mouse, which allows differently abled people to control the cursor on a computer using facial gestures and head movements. Initially available only for PCs, it is now expanded to the Android operating system – announced Google at its annual developers-focused conference, Google I/O. So what is Project Gameface and how does it work? Let us explain:

What is Project Gameface

On May 10, Google announced Project Gameface, an open-source code that allows developers to create software for a hands-free gaming mouse. The technology uses head tracking and facial gesture recognition for controlling a computer’s cursor. Google said that the project was inspired by the story of quadriplegic video game streamer, Lance Carr, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, a progressive disease that weakens muscles. Google said that the aim of Project Gameface is to give differently abled people new additional means to operate devices, while being cost-effective for wider reach.

How Project Gameface works

Through the open-source code, Google offers developers means to track facial expressions and head movements, utilising the device’s camera or an external camera. The gestures and movements are then translated into intuitive and personalised control. Using the Project Gameface code, developers can also offer users personalised configurations with the ability to customise facial expressions, gesture sizes, cursor speed, and more.

Google said that it has collaborated with Incluzza, a social enterprise in India, to learn how-to expand the technology beyond gaming. The company said that it is working on improvements to incorporate other abilities and settings such as typing and more.

Project Gameface on Android

At its developers’ conference on May 14, Google announced that it is expanding the compatibility of Project Gameface to work on Android devices.

To work on Android smartphones and tablets, Google has replicated the same idea and has incorporated a new virtual cursor on the operating system (OS) using the Android accessibility service. Google said that it is leveraging MediaPipe’s Face Landmarks Detection application programming interface (API), which understands 52 facial gestures such as raising left eyebrow or opening mouth. Google is utilising the understanding of these expressions to offer control of a wide range of functions. The company said that this will also give developers the option to set different thresholds for recognising each expression, offering customisation options.

Project Gameface: Availability

Open source code for Project Gameface is now available on Google’s Github repository for developers and enterprises.

How is Google’s Project Gameface different from Apple’s Eye tracking

Apple on May 15 announced an array of accessibility features that will be coming to its platforms later this year. This includes the new Eye Tracking feature for iPhone and iPad that it said will allow users to navigate their iPhone or iPad with just their eyes, without requiring any supplementary hardware. Apple said the eye tracking feature is powered by on-device capabilities and the data used for this feature to work is stored on the device itself and not shared even with Apple.

While Google’s Gameface offers similar capabilities, it uses head gestures and facial expressions to control the navigation rather than eye-tracking. Additionally, Apple’s eye-tracking feature will be built into the devices operating software, while Gameface is an open-source code enabling third-party app developers to allow the accessibility feature on their own apps and software.

OpenAI enters into Google ecosystem with Drive integration in ChatGPT

OpenAI enters into Google ecosystem with Drive integration in ChatGPT

OpenAI has reportedly started rolling out support for Google Drive integration to its AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. According to a report by 9To5Google, multiple ChatGPT Enterprise users are reporting that the ChatGPT now allows connecting Google Drive to the chatbot.

As per the report, within a conversation, ChatGPT is prompting users that the service now allows connecting apps to the platform. Within the file attachment menu, users can choose the option to “Connect Apps”, which then leads to a second page where they can link their Google Drive and OneDrive account. However, the feature is currently limited to select paid-tier Enterprise users.

Once the user has connected their Google Drive to ChatGPT, the file attachment menu on the chat box shows the “Add from Google Drive” option. Similar to how it opens up to a local folder for uploading a file or document to ChatGPT, the new option leads to a file picker on the linked Google Drive.

While OpenAI has not officially announced the feature, it has apparently started rolling it out to select users suggesting that a wide-scale roll out might happen soon.

Google, at its annual developers conference I/O, announced improved Gemini AI assistance in workspace apps including Google Drive. While OpenAI’s integration of Google Drive and Microsoft’s OneDrive to its ChatGPT platform offer their users more options, Google integration of Gemini goes much deeper into its Workspace apps. With a new side-panel for Gemini, Google is allowing easier accessibility with a sidebar, which allows seamless movement within the ecosystem of Workspace apps that also includes the likes of Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more.

GTA 6 with 'unparalleled entertainment experience' coming in 2025: Report

GTA 6 with 'unparalleled entertainment experience' coming in 2025: Report

Image: Grand Theft Auto VI

Take-Two Interactive, parent company of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video game series maker Rockstar Games, has shared details about the GTA 6 release date. According to a report by The Verge, Take-Two at its quarterly earnings call said that the next instalment in the GTA video game series can be expected in “fall of 2025”.

“Our outlook reflects a narrowing of Rockstar Games’ previously established window of Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI. We are highly confident that Rockstar Games will deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience, and our expectations for the commercial impact of the title continue to increase,” the company said, as reported by The Verge.

At the earnings call, the company said that the last iteration of the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA 5, which was released back in 2013, has sold over 200 million units till date. The Verge stated that this makes the video game the second best-selling title in history, behind Microsoft’s Minecraft.

GTA 6: Details

Rockstar Games, the subsidiary video game studio of Take-Two, released the trailer for the upcoming GTA 6 game in December, last year. The company has not revealed any more details about the highly anticipated game since, but it has confirmed that the video game will be released initially on gaming consoles such as PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X, and Series S. There is still no confirmation about the availability of GTA 6 on PCs.

The next instalment in the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise will be set in Vice City- a fictionalised version of Miami, similar to that used in the 2002 video game GTA: Vice City. The video game will likely revolve around the story of Lucia, the first female protagonist in the franchise. However, there are multiple reports stating that the videogame will feature multiple playable characters apart from the female lead.
