Microsoft said on Thursday it plans to offer its cloud computing customers a platform of AMD artificial intelligence chips that will compete with components made by Nvidia, with details to be given at its Build developer conference next week.

It will also launch a preview of new Cobalt 100 custom processors at the conference.

Microsoft’s clusters of Advanced Micro Devices’ flagship MI300X AI chips will be sold through its Azure cloud computing service. They will give its customers an alternative to Nvidia’s H100 family of powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) which dominate the data center chip market for AI but can be hard to obtain due to high demand.

To build AI models or run applications, companies typically must string together – or cluster – multiple GPUs because the data and computation will not fit on a single processor.

AMD, which expects $4 billion in AI chip revenue this year, has said the chips are powerful enough to train and run large AI models.

As well as Nvidia’s top-shelf AI chips, Microsoft’s cloud computing unit sells access to its own in-house AI chips called Maia.

Separately, the Cobalt 100 processors Microsoft plans to preview next week offer 40% better performance over other processors based on Arm Holdings’ technology, the company said. Snowflake and others have begun to use them.

The Cobalt chips, which were announced in November, are being tested to power Teams, Microsoft’s messaging tool for businesses, and positioned to compete with the in-house Graviton CPUs made by Amazon.com.

After Google, OpenAI strikes deal with Reddit to train AI on its content

After Google, OpenAI strikes deal with Reddit to train AI on its content

Reddit has partnered with OpenAI to bring its content to popular chatbot ChatGPT, the companies said on Thursday, sending the social media platform’s shares up 12% in extended trade.

The deal underscores Reddit’s attempt to diversify beyond its advertising business, and follows its recent partnership with Alphabet to make its content available for training Google’s AI models.

ChatGPT and other OpenAI products will use Reddit’s application programming interface, the means by which Reddit distributes its content, following the new partnership.

OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner, the company said.

Ahead of Reddit’s March IPO, Reuters reported that Reddit struck its deal with Alphabet, worth about $60 million per year.

Investors view selling its data to train AI models as a key source of revenue beyond Reddit’s advertising business.

The social media company earlier this month reported strong revenue growth and improving profitability in the first earnings since its market debut, indicating that its Google deal and its push to grow its ads business were paying off.

Reddit’s shares rose 10.5% to $62.31 after the bell. As of Wednesday’s close, the stock is up nearly 12% since its market debut in March.

Start-ups and GCCs lead in AI adoption in India, says EY report

Start-ups and GCCs lead in AI adoption in India, says EY report

Start-ups and Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India are leading firms in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and are swiftly advancing from proof of concepts (POCs) to the production stage with Generative AI (GenAI), while domestic legacy enterprises are more cautiously evaluating the enterprise-grade functionality and reliability of the technology and are lagging behind, said a recent study released by EY on Thursday.

According to the report titled ‘Is Generative AI Beginning to Deliver on Its Promise in India? – AIdea of India Update’, just 15-20 per cent of POCs by domestic legacy enterprises have been rolled out into production, compared to GCCs which are rapidly embracing GenAI for innovation, having rolled out 30-40 per cent of POCs to production.

Further, the analysis of India’s top 50 most valued Indian unicorns in the study revealed that 66 per cent of them were already using AI or GenAI technology in their operations.

“This indicates that start-ups have been more proactive in terms of adopting AI technology as compared to the legacy players,” said the report.

The study highlights three issues – hallucination of Large Language Model (LLM) responses, data privacy and sovereignty, and the cost implications of deploying GenAI in production, as the key challenges for organizations in making investment decisions.

Talking about this, Mahesh Makhija, Partner and Technology Consulting Leader, EY India, said, “Enterprises need to make the shift from ad hoc experiments to deploying ‘fit for purpose’ use cases for immediate value creation and long-term programs that provide functional transformation. They will not only have to build their enterprise AI platform but also keep a close eye on cost implications/total cost of ownership and stay agile to adopt a hybrid approach due to the lack of India availability of different models.”

On GenAI use cases, the study said that about one-third of GenAI use cases involved using intelligent assistants for specific tasks, while about 25 per cent focused on marketing automation through text generation and text-to-image or text-to-video capabilities.

Another significant area, accounting for about 20 per cent of use cases, was document intelligence, which included document summarisation, enterprise knowledge management, and search.

“Additionally, companies are exploring GenAI for customer-facing chatbots, enhanced user experience, coding assistants, and internal process automation,” said the report.

India ranks first in adoption of GenAI across Asia-Pacific: Deloitte India

India ranks first in adoption of GenAI across Asia-Pacific: Deloitte India

With 93 per cent of students and 83 per cent of employees actively engaging with the technology, India ranks first in the adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) across Asia-Pacific, a report released by Deloitte India on Thursday showed. It, however, added that only 50 per cent of these employees believe their managers know they use this technology.

The findings were a part of the “Generative AI in the Asia Pacific: Young Employees Lead as Employers Play Catch-Up” report, based on a survey of 11,900 individuals across 13 countries in the region. It also noted that over the next five years, an increase of a whopping 182 per cent is anticipated in the daily usage of GenAI.

The report said that GenAI could significantly affect 17 per cent of working hours across the Asia Pacific, amounting to almost 1.1 billion work hours annually. Across the Asia-Pacific region, GenAI users save an average of 6.3 hours per week. “Indian users save even more time, with an average of 7.85 hours weekly, allowing for increased focus on skill acquisition,” it added.

Moreover, 86 per cent of Indian GenAI users reported that the technology enhanced their productivity. In Asia-Pacific, 83 per cent said this technology improves their ideation capabilities.

However, businesses may not be fully implementing this technology. According to the survey, around 75 per cent of the users said that their businesses were falling behind on GenAI adoption.

The findings of the survey also showed that there is a need to address the challenges of this technology.

“To fully use this transformative technology, it is crucial to address implementation challenges and deepen our understanding of its capabilities. Despite its clear benefits, obstacles such as implementation complexities, risk aversion, and knowledge gaps impede widespread adoption,” said Anjani Kumar, partner (consulting) at Deloitte India.

“Leaders should use these technologies not only for efficiency gains but also to fundamentally reshape business models and processes. Overcoming implementation hurdles requires proactive engagement and a comprehensive understanding of AI’s capabilities among stakeholders,” Kumar said.
