Nothing inaugural smartphone under CMF brand could be cheaper than Phone 2a

British consumer technology startup Nothing is reportedly working on a new smartphone under its CMF sub-brand. The smartphone, likely to be named the “CMF Phone 1”, is expected to be priced less than the Nothing’s most affordable smartphone – the Nothing Phone 2a, according to a report by Android Central.

As per the report, the “CMF Phone 1” will be priced at Rs 12,000 onwards making it the most affordable smartphone in the Nothing ecosystem. For comparison, the Nothing Phone 2a is priced at Rs 23,999 onwards.

CMF Phone 1: Expected specifications

The CMF Phone 1 is reported to feature a complete plastic construction and will be offered in Black, White and Orange colour options. The smartphone is expected to include a 6.5-inch LCD display with Gorilla Glass protection. For imaging, the smartphone is expected to sport a single camera on the back side. Specifics about the camera sensor are not available yet.

The CMF Phone 1 is expected to be powered by a chip from MediaTek Dimensity series, possibly with 5G connectivity. Additionally, it is expected to feature a 5,000mAh battery and support 33W wired charging.

Apple iPad Pro with M4 comes in different RAM, processor configurations

Apple iPad Pro with M4 comes in different RAM, processor configurations

Apple debuted the iPad Pro with M4 at its “Let Loose” event on May 7. For the first time, the silicon on the iPad is configurable based on storage options. Moreover, the iPad Pro is configurable for RAM too. These apply to both 11-inch and 13-inch display options that the iPad Pro 2024 comes in

Apple offers the iPad Pro 2024 in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage configurations. In the base 256GB and 512GB storage, the iPad Pro with M4 is offered in 9-core CPU configuration – three performance cores and six efficiency cores. However, the Apple M4 chip in the 1TB and 2TB storage options feature a 10-core CPU – four performance cores and six efficiency cores. Likewise, the iPad Pro with M4 in 256GB and 512GB storage configuration features 8GB RAM, which doubles to 16GB on the 1TB and 2TB storage options.

The M4 chip on the iPad Pro is identical on other fronts – features a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning and artificial intelligence operations, 10-core GPU, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and 120GB/s memory bandwidth.

Apple has offered configurable processor options in MacBooks, but this is the first time an iPad gets it. While the 9-core CPU configuration may show performance difference in benchmarks, it could not impact the device performance in everyday use, unless the device is tasked to the max of its potential. Nevertheless, with the same GPU and Neural Engine across models, the iPad Pro 2024 is expected to deliver similar performance with regard to graphics and machine learning tasks.

OpenAI readying search product to potentially rival Google, Perplexity

OpenAI readying search product to potentially rival Google, Perplexity

By Rachel Metz

OpenAI is developing a feature for ChatGPT that can search the web and cite sources in its results, according to a person familiar with the matter, potentially competing head on with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and AI search startup Perplexity.

The feature would allow users to ask ChatGPT a question and receive answers that use details from the web with citations to sources such as Wikipedia entries and blog posts, according to the person, who asked to remain anonymous discussing private information. One version of the product also uses images alongside written responses to questions, when they’re relevant. If a user asked ChatGPT how to change a doorknob, for instance, the results might include a diagram to illustrate the task, the person said.

The Information reported on a search product in development in February. The details on how the product might work have not previously been reported. OpenAI declined to comment.

OpenAI is under immense pressure to expand the capabilities of its most well-known product as a growing list of rivals are pushing out chatbots — and search has proven to be a key area of interest for the AI industry. Perplexity has gained popularity — and a $1 billion valuation — by offering an AI-powered search engine that emphasizes accuracy and citations. Google has also been racing to rethink its core search experience around AI and is expected to reveal the latest plans for its Gemini AI models at its annual I/O event next week.

On social media, there has been tremendous speculation about OpenAI’s search plans. Some users on X, formerly known as Twitter, recently pointed to the existence of the web page search.chatgpt.com as an indicator that a search feature could be coming from OpenAI. Visitors to that URL will see a “not found” message in small type on the page, but over the weekend it briefly re-routed to chatgpt.com, the official website where users can interact with the chatbot.

Such a feature would expand on what OpenAI currently offers to some users. ChatGPT can automatically pull up search results online for certain queries — such as the current weather in San Francisco — but the feature is currently limited to those who pay for the chatbot. In some cases, this option also provides citations. But the product can have hiccups: When asked on Sunday, “What did President Biden do this weekend?” it said he was in Delaware. While accurate, it cited a news story from 2023.

Microsoft Xbox shuts multiple studios, consolidates teams for cost-cutting

Microsoft Xbox shuts multiple studios, consolidates teams for cost-cutting

Servers of the game ‘Redfall’, made by Arkane, will continue to remain online for players

Microsoft’s Xbox is shutting down a number of gaming studios including Arkane Austin, making it the latest publisher to shut down studios amid signs of a gaming slowdown.

Studios such as “Hi-Fi Rush” maker Tango Gameworks, headquartered in Tokyo, and Canada-based Alpha Dog will also be closed and some employees will be laid off, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios said in a memo that was seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

Xbox declined to comment when asked about the number of employees impacted by the layoffs.

Growth in personal computing and console gaming is expected to remain below pre-pandemic levels as gamers record fewer hours of playtime owing to weaker release schedules, data from research firm Newzoo showed.

The “reprioritization of titles and resources” is so that Xbox can invest deeply into its portfolio of games and new intellectual property, according to Booty.

All the affected studios are units of ZeniMax Media, which was acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion in 2021, and Bethesda.

Microsoft’s Xbox content and services segment reported a 62% jump in third-quarter revenue last month, largely driven by the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

“Grand Theft Auto” maker Take-Two Interactive said it would shut down two subsidiary studios as part of a mass layoff, Bloomberg News reported last week.

Microsoft previously laid off 1,900 employees at Activision and Xbox at the start of the year.

Some developers from Arkane Austin will join other studios and work on projects across Bethesda, the creator of “The Elder Scrolls” and “Fallout” titles.

Servers of the game “Redfall”, made by Arkane, will continue to remain online for players.

Setu unveils Sesame, India's first domain-specific LLM for BFSI sector

Setu unveils Sesame, India's first domain-specific LLM for BFSI sector

Setu, a leading Indian fintech company and part of the Pine Labs Group, on Tuesday unveiled Sesame, India’s first Large Language Model (LLM) specifically designed for the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector.

Developed in collaboration with indigenous AI research firm Sarvam AI, the company said this marks a “ChatGPT moment” in financial services. The unveiling took place at Adbhut India, an event organised by the non-profit People+ai, in the presence of Nandan Nilekani (co-founder and director of EkStep Foundation), Shankar Maruwada (co-founder and chief executive officer of EkStep Foundation), Tanuj Bhojwani (head of People+ai), and other prominent figures in fintech, AI, and digital public infrastructure.

“At Setu, our mission is to democratise financial services,” said Nikhil Kumar, co-founder of Setu. “We believe that the powerful combination of the Account Aggregator framework and transformative technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs) is the key to making this a reality. Just as India has led the way with groundbreaking innovations like Aadhaar and UPI, we are excited to build meaningful, compliant, and responsible AI applications that showcase India’s leadership in applied AI,” Kumar added.

Sesame leverages the rich data ecosystem enabled by India’s digital infrastructure to power various features. These include improved credit underwriting, fraud detection, loan monitoring, upsell or cross-sell, and personal finance advisory. Setu and Sarvam AI have together created Sesame to be both domain- and region-specific by training it on custom data highly relevant to India’s BFSI sector. This includes combining a domain-specific LLM with delivery models. This allows enterprise customers to harness the vast amounts of financial data available both internally and externally in a compliant manner. Setu’s vision is to empower BFSI customers to make smarter, faster credit decisions. It also aims to provide hyper-personalised financial services to its customers across their entire lifecycle.

“Generative AI represents a significant step change in the nature of computation. What can be done with one rupee of compute is now dramatically more valuable,” said Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of Sarvam AI. “Our collaboration with Setu is an example of bringing this technology to create value in the BFSI space. We showed that we can significantly increase the accuracy of identifying insights from financial statements. This is a template which we believe can be repeated across sectors where India has created foundational digital public goods,” he added.

Apple introduces new AI-focused chip M4 in iPad Pro model upgrade

Apple introduces new AI-focused chip M4 in iPad Pro model upgrade

iPad Pro 2024 Photo: Apple

Apple on Tuesday introduced a new chip called the M4 that it said would outclass personal computers designed for artificial intelligence – but put the new chip in an iPad Pro model rather than a laptop.

The move is unusual for Apple, which typically puts its latest chips into its Mac lineup, where M3 chips started to show up last fall. But analysts told Reuters that Apple is likely eager to get its latest chips, which are more power-efficient and have larger portions of the chip dedicated to handling AI tasks, into the hands of app makers ahead of its annual software developer conference next month.

The iPhone maker’s latest product launch event comes as the Silicon Valley heavyweight trails Big Tech rivals while they race to build AI into its products across their businesses and dominate the emerging technology.

Apple said the iPad Pro – its highest-priced model – will have upgraded displays and will now come with an M4 chip with a larger “neural engine.” Apple chips have featured a neural engine since 2017, but rivals such as Intel and have begun to tout their competitive technologies for personal computers.

Apple also introduced new models of its mid-priced iPad Air, which will now come in a larger 13-inch screen size at $800, as well as the 11-inch size it previously came in for $600. The models come with Apple’s M2 chip, which first came to market in Apple’s MacBooks in 2022.

Apple often introduces new iPads in May, a time when education customers are making purchasing decisions for the next academic year. But in recent years, Apple has started to transform its higher-priced models into devices for creative and business professionals with its iPad Pro models.

Precisely what AI features the new chips could power might not become fully clear until Apple’s developer conference, where it often shows new capabilities for Siri, its voice assistant, as well as the rest of its operating systems.

For now, many AI features – such as helping zoom in on a user during a video call and slightly altering the look of their eyes to make it look as though they are looking directly into the camera – are not likely to inspire a wave of upgrades, according to some analysts.

“Is it really enough for people to look into it and buy them? Probably not,” said Mikako Kitagawa, an analyst at Gartner. “It has to be some kind of remarkable experience.” Apple rivals Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google have dived headlong into AI, introducing chatbots that aim to act as virtual assistants for tasks such as writing emails or tapping out lines of computer code.

While those companies’ stocks’ have surged to record highs, Apple’s share have fallen 6% year to date as it struggles with weak iPhone demand and tough competition in China, and as investors wait for it to show how it will leverage AI technology.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said last week the company is “very bullish about our opportunity in generative AI” and plans to make more announcements later this year.

Carolina Milanesi, an analyst with Creative Strategies, said upgraded iPads could be a way for Apple to get new chips onto the market ahead of its developer conference next month, where it may reveal more about how it plans to address AI.

That could come in the form of automating common tasks to make them faster, or letting Siri, the company’s voice-based assistant, delve deeper into apps to carry out tasks on the user’s behalf.

The key question facing Apple is how much it can improve its AI features while processing most information on the device itself, for privacy reasons.

“I always say that the AI is only as smart as the data it can get its hands on,” Milanesi said.
