Apple set for big sales decline as investors await GenAI in iPhones

Analysts believe such an AI integration could drive demand for the next iPhone series, expected to be announced in the fall.

Apple’s plan to add generative AI to its iPhones and revive sagging sales in the crucial Chinese market will be in focus on Thursday, when the tech giant is expected to report its biggest quarterly revenue decline in more than a year.

Long considered a must-own stock on Wall Street, Apple shares have underperformed other Big Tech companies in recent months, falling more than 10% year to date as fears mount about its slow roll out of AI services and as a resurgent Huawei takes market share in China.

Analysts on average see iPhone sales, which account for about half of Apple’s revenue, falling 10.4% in the first three months of 2024, according to LSEG. That drop would be the steepest in more than three years.

Analysts estimate Apple’s total revenue declined 5% in its second quarter, which included January through March. That would be Apple’s biggest revenue decline since the December-quarter of 2022, when revenue fell 5.5%.

Apple earlier this year lost the crown of the world’s most valuable company to Microsoft and its market value now stands at $2.68 trillion after the decline in its share price in 2024.

Weak revenue and falling shares have put pressure on Apple to spruce up its flagship device after years without major upgrades.

The company is in talks with OpenAI and Alphabet-owned Google to add genAI features for the iPhone that could be unveiled at what is expected to be its biggest-ever annual developer conference in June, Bloomberg News has reported.

Analysts believe such an AI integration could drive demand for the next iPhone series, expected to be announced in the fall.

While executives at Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and other major technology firms have talked up their AI strategies on quarterly conference calls in recent months, Apple CEO Tim Cook has discussed his plans for the emerging technology much less.

Adding AI features to iPhones could also help Apple to compete better with Huawei and Samsung Electronics, which reclaimed the title of the world’s top smartphone vendor from Apple earlier this year, driven by demand for the AI features in its Galaxy S24 smartphones.

“Replacement cycle tailwinds and incremental generative AI features set up Apple well for a strong iPhone 16 cycle,” Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi said this week, upgrading his rating on the company’s shares to “outperform” from “market-perform”.

“We believe prevailing weakness in China is more cyclical than structural, and note historically Apple’s China business has exhibited much higher volatility than Apple overall, given its very feature-sensitive installed base.” Thursday’s earnings will also be watched closely for updates on the company’s stock buyback plan and the Vision Pro, Apple’s first major product in years that hit the shelves in February.

After initial enthusiasm, there have been signs that demand slowed for the $3,500 device, with an analyst saying this month that Apple has pulled back its production estimates for the mixed-reality headset.

The rest of the company’s hardware business is also reeling from soft demand, with iPads and Mac sales expected to fall 11.4% and 4.3%, respectively, in the March quarter.

Apple has signaled it is sharpening its focus on the devices, which have also been hobbled by a lack of major upgrades.

The company is hosting an event later this month where a revamped iPad line-up is expected to be unveiled and media reports have said that it plans to update every Mac model with faster, AI-focused M4 processors.

The services business – which includes money earned from App Store and subscription services such as Apple TV – is expected to remain a bright spot with revenue growth of 7.7%.

Micron Tech's India-made semiconductor chips set for global debut in 2025

Micron Tech's India-made semiconductor chips set for global debut in 2025

The first India-made semiconductor chips will roll out from Micron Technology’s packaging unit in Gujarat’s Sanand in the first half of 2025, Micron India Managing Director Anand Ramamoorthy told Mint in an interview.

“We expect to have products rollout early next year, in the first half, which is a very good turnaround given that we had announced this whole engagement in the middle of last year,” Ramamoorthy said.

Ramamoorthy said the majority of the chips made in Sanand will be exported, potentially making the unit a key player in the global semiconductor market.

Ramamoorthy said the chips would be used for data centres, smartphones, notebooks, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. However, the specific allocation of the chips will be determined closer to the final production stage, based on factors such as demand dynamics, pricing considerations, and customer requirements.

Micron is also eyeing new opportunities in emerging sectors such as two-wheeler electric vehicles and government contracts unique to the Indian market. Ramamoorthy hinted at potential partnerships with Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication units in Assam and Gujarat, citing existing collaborations with Tata Group companies and the possibility of expanding product lines into their factories, while speaking with Mint.

Micron is engaged in bringing its semiconductor supply chain to India, with key suppliers such as Simmtech beginning to set up operations in Gujarat. Ramamoorthy said the company is collaborating with the government and suppliers to leverage opportunities presented by India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Under the government’s $10 billion financial incentive scheme for semiconductor fabrication and assembly, Micron is establishing an assembly, testing, monitoring, and packaging (ATMP) plant in India. The project, supported by significant financial backing from central and state governments, is poised to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, further bolstering India’s semiconductor landscape.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Micron Technology may receive a $6.1 billion in grants from the United States’ Commerce Department to bring semiconductor production back to the US. The company has reportedly pledged to open up to four factories in the New York state, and one in Idaho, however, has cited they would require a combination of Chips grants, investment tax credits and local incentives to make up cost differences between the US and overseas units.

The company has projects in China and Japan, along with India.

WhatsApp to show 'recently online' information on contact list page: Report

WhatsApp to show 'recently online' information on contact list page: Report

WhatsApp has reportedly started testing a new feature in beta release for iOS devices that would allow users to see contacts that have been online recently right on top of their contacts list. WhatsApp update tracking website WABetaInfo has reported that the instant messaging platform from Meta has released an update, WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.9.10.71, on the iPhone TestFlight app that enables the feature. According to the report, the feature was previously spotted on WhatsApp for Android beta update 2.24.9.14, which is currently under testing too.

WhatsApp’s ‘Recently Online’ feature: What it is

As part of the contact list on WhatsApp, the “recently online” feature provides an alternative list of contacts that have been found online recently. Essentially, it shows a limited view of your contacts’ recent activity on WhatsApp. Therefore, you will soon see a list of contacts first based on which contacts have been active on the platform recently, followed by a full contacts list.

In the public version currently available for all on iOS and Android, users have the option to choose in the “Privacy Settings” who can see their “last seen” and who can see when they are online. This indicator appears beneath the contact name when you open their chat. However, on disabling their own last seen, users cannot see when other people were last seen or online. Users can choose to show their last seen or when they are online to either “Everyone”, “My contacts”, “Nobody”, or “My contacts except”.

According to the WABetaInfo report, these settings will integrate with “recently online”, and contacts that have disabled last seen will not be included in the “recently online” list.

Arc browser now available for Windows: What it is, how to download, install

Arc browser now available for Windows: What it is, how to download, install

The Browser Company has released its Arc browser for Windows 11. Based on the free and open-source Chromium engine, the Arc browser for Windows 11 is built on Apple’s Swift programming language. It essentially allows the Windows version of the browser to maintain features parity with the Apple version.

However, the initial version of the Arc browser for Windows lacks some features that are supported on Apple’s macOS version, such as Little Arc that opens a link in a floating pop-up window. On the other hand, the Windows version of the Arc browser supports touchscreen.

The Arc browser from Browser Company is currently limited to Windows 11, but support for Windows 10 is in the works – according to a news report on Tech Crunch.

Arc browser for Windows 11: Details

Similar to the Mac version, the Arc browser for Windows 11 has a collapsible sidebar positioned at the left side. This is where all the action happens, while the main browser window remains free from distraction. Below are the features offered by Arc browser on Windows:

Spaces: Serve as a bin or a folder where you can nest tabs into distinct sets tailored for various tasks such as “Work” and “Home”.

Profiles: Dedicated profiles for different users allow the browser to segregate browsing data and preferences, thereby enabling a personalised browsing experience.

Split view: Shows multiple tabs side-by-side within a single window for improved multitasking.

Split view

Picture-in-picture video player: Allows users to stream videos in a pop-up window, which is moveable. This functionality is said to enhance user productivity by eliminating the need to switch between tabs or windows, thereby streamlining the browsing experience.

Arc browser for Windows: How to download

Since Windows natively supports third-party app downloads from their respective websites, the Arc browser can be downloaded and installed directly from the Browsing Company’s web portal. It is currently not available on the Microsoft Store. Therefore, follow the steps to download the Arc browser on Windows 11:

Open any browser and go to – https://arc.net/

Tap on the “Download Arc for Windows 11” option.

Grant permission to download, if the pop-up appears, and select the folder to download the installer package.

Go to the folder where the installer package is and double click on it.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the browser.

Once done, the browser icon will appear on the home screen. If not, go to the start-up menu and manually search for “Arc” to find the browser. You can pin it to the taskbar for convenience.
